1. Met him a few years back in London and tried to start up a conversation about his Bass playing with Japan he just stared straight through me. I don't suppose he minded whn the likes of me were buying his records back in the day! although judging from his recent biog he didn't make much money, it all went to the blonde fella. As we are name dropping Gary Tibbs is a top bloke for those that recall Adam and the Ants and Roxy Music, always ready to talk about all things bass!
Intersting what you say about Mick Karn. I don't really know anything about him apart from he plays fretless bass. However, a friend of mine did vocals for him on one of his albums. It was some competition thing and she won and he never even bothered to turn up at the studio or thank her.
2. Dereks a really decent bloke and very approachable unlike some other ex pop star bass players - step forward Mick Karn! Your right about him milking it a bit in 85 but I get the feeling theres no love lost with Kerr.
I agree, John is a great bass player but I don't think he filled the hole that was left by Derek. I can't think of one memorable or stand out bass line on Once Upon A Time. Also, Derek says the reason he left SM was because he became lazy and was enjoying the high life to much. Enjoying the partying a little to much. He admits its all his own fault. I'll be talking to him in the next week or so and should be seeing him in March. I'll ask him about his Wal's. I would love to have a go although I sooner play his red precision.
3. PMS Replied to.... and still no sign of a Wal!?
 4. Cheers guys, your right of course in an ideal world I'd have both but having been out of work for most of last year and only recently joined the working world again I need to replenish the savings as the Redundancy money took a bit of a bash what with having to pay the mortgage and other horrible things. It would have to be a great offer and the money would go straight against a Wal - nice to know there are so many decent people in the Bass chat world! cheers for the support - much appreciated...
By the sounds of how much you love your Sadowsky, I'd also be inclined to say, "Don't do it." Keep your favourite bass and save for a Wal. That give you a win-win scenario.
5. UPDATE This Bass is now for sale due to pending House move - Deposit needed so straight sale preferred. £1,200 Any interest........? Steve. This Sadowsky is my pride and Joy and was previously owned by the ex Overwater Luthier Dave Wilson so it has been very well looked after. What can I say about it? It is perfect and has the best neck on a Jazz I have ever seen or played it's mint and has no marks whatsoever. I am not sure of its actual age but less than 2 years would be my guess as it comes with the newer Sadowsky carry case. I don't really in my heart want to sell as its the best Bass I have ever had plus the finish is my particular favorite black/black maple but feel free to make me an offer, as a ball-park I wouldn't conside less than £1,200 as I am not particularly desperate to sell. Also sorry but not interested in overseas sales (unless its Ireland or the Isle of Wight!) Cheers Guy's, Steve.
 6. To be honest I don't think he is really that fussed if they sell or not, he is just having a clear out. There are links to him playing them on you tube he played the fretted on his last tour with the band in 84/85. I agree though he would be better advertising in the states.
That's a good point about stories to be told. He should be listing all the songs (especially big hits) that he recorded with the these, as well as tours and notable shows he did with them. It's one thing to buy a bass owned by someone famous that that person hardly ever touched, but a collector will be all over an instrument that was used to record major hits.
7. Giblins an excellent bassist but for me the rawness of Forbes made Simple Minds, the bass practically disappeared from their songs after he was booted out by Kerr.
I much prefer john giblin....
8. Not that I am a name dropper but have been in contact with Mr Forbes, I agree they are overpriced I think he is going for the fact they were used on recordings by Simple Minds in fact he put a few links to him playing them live. I understand he has had an offer close to £5k for the fretted from a Fan in Italy but can't see him getting what he wants.
 9. Yum!
 10. Here's Mine:
 11. Its a 3 colour sunburst.
Hi Steve, I'll have to have a think about that one - what colour is it?
12. Folks, Finally decided its time to let this baby go, she is a 2008 American Fender Jazz in super condition only mark of note is a slight scratch on the head - Pics if required. Fretted with a lovely sunburst finish she comes with the original new style Hard case the previous owner decided to go for the classic finish with oblig Ash tray but not to my taste so usually removed but perhaps its your thang! In classic Del Boy - I am not looking for £700 nor £675 but £650 and its yours!
 13. Hi, Your probably not interested but I have a 2008 USA Fender Jazz in excellent condition with original Fender Hardcase? Cheers, Steve.
If anyone has a 1980 Peavey T-40 bass (or a T-60 guitar) that they'd like to trade (obviously plus some cash my way) that would be grand.
14. I think I'll point that out to him! ;-)
Not going to get much interest listed them under Guitars->Accessories->Tuners
15. Folks, For anyone interested ex Simple Minds and Propaganda bassist Derek Forbes is selling his beloved pair of Wal Basses on E-Bay one fretted and one fretless. These babies have a great track record and were used on many Simple Minds recordings and gigs. Mind you will need 10 grand to get them both! Steve.
 16. For those I have not responded to apologies, usual work stuff getting in the way! I hope to mail you all with pictures tonight. Steve.
 17. A couple of things: The Fender does come with the original New Style Hard Case and Fender Booklet. The Sadowsky is a Metro Model and Not New York Hope that helps.
 18. Ok, to clear a few things up. Thanks for the mails recieved so far I shall start sending pics out later this evening. Apologies to those that have asked but I will not ship outside of the UK and Ireland - been burnt doing that before. The Status has a wooden neck and according to the head is a Status Graphite 5 I think its a shark model I believe it has graphite rods in the neck, I have no idea of age nor did the person I bought it from but I don't think its too old as its in good condition with no real signs of wear on the neck or anywhere else for that matter. Its lovely and has a lovely tone but I am after a Wal Fretless otherwise it would be staying put. I appreciate its nice to look at pictures of basses but if you are only interested in one of the basses please let me know which one as 1) I can't believe anyone wants to buy all three! and 2) it will be one big memory heavy e-mail! Ta, Steve.
 19. Folks, I need to fund a Wal Bass and am toying with selling some of my prized possesion namely: (Mouthwater Pic Attached) Sadowsky Black/Black/Maple Jazz - £1200 2008 (Mint) Fender 3 Colour Sunburst American Jazz 2008 £700 (V-Good) Status Black/Black Graphite Fretless 5 £350 (V-Good) The Sadowsky has its original Case as does the Fender the status comes with a brand new gig bag all have been recently restrung and set-up. I am afraid the Sandberg and the Fender black/black P are definately stayers (unless someone offers silly money!). Regarding what I am looking for, as I am not too keen to let them go I will not be giving them away and if I can't get at least the asking price it may be a shop or the Bay. I have several very hi-res pics so please message me with your E-mail address and I'll forward you the pics are too hi-res for here (and I don't want to reduce the pic quality) Regarding trades unless its a Wal I am afraid I am not interested. Steve.
 20. Its an 88/89 Custom, consider paul rung!
 21. Cheers Chris, what a great community this is. I have mailed Wal for a quote as ideally I would like a lined neck. Thanks everyone! Steve.
PS, FWIW, if that neck's gone or not to your liking, I'd get a neck made rather than defret the original. Chris
22. Kev, your not helping! ;-) lol
http://www.thebassgallery.com/workshop.cfm
23. Folks, I have been offered my dream bass, a lovely custom Wal from a decent chap on here. I am really after a fretless Wal and due to their rarity and vastly inflated prices as new (£5k!) I was wondering about getting a decent pro Luthier to de-fret the neck and turn it into a lined fretless possibly even getting Electric wood to do it. Am I mad? should I just keep waiting for a fretless? am I stealing a decent fretted from the world? Thoughts? Steve.
