1.
Wise words from Scoop there, I like the two-thirds theory. Good call.
+1 Good thread by the way and it's got me thinking as to what is musical integrity anyway? To me it means being able to respect yourself as a person and a musician whatever the music is that you are playing.. Whether other people feel I have any musical integrity is a secondary concern. Personally, I'm very happy as I think I have 3 out of 3 at the moment. Using Scoop's music integrity calculator: 1) is the music good? - Great; I get to play Bowie, Prince, Killers etc.. How can it not be? 2) are the guys in the band a good laugh? - We're always having a laugh, especially during the gigs! 3) is the money good? - My music hobby pretty much pays for itself, so that's OK in my book. And long may it continue!
 2. mr_russ had a LM11 I think and now he uses a GK1001RB, so he'd be a good person to comment on this...
 3.
"Love is the Drug"... monster bassline...
+1 There's some great bass playing on Roxy Music albums.. The bass on 'Mother of Pearl' on the Stranded album is just wonderful!
 4.
Melanie C's ole bass player, Kim Khahn.. Awesome 'in the pocket' player and sings awesome harmonies at the same time.. GUH! Makes you sick ha ha!!
+1 on that Dood! But these three are amazing though; Tina Weymouth for playing stuff no-one else in her area of music (i.e. 70s american New Wave) was playing at the time Carol Kaye, who's discography speaks for itself Gail Ann Dorsey who has played in Bowie's band for years!
 5.
What he said. The bass chair in roxy had a lot of bums on it.
Very true, though John Gustafson was always my favourite of them all...
 6.
Sorry one and all...but another 'I've just be listening to...' story! Just on the way back from Gatwick after a day of biz in Denmark (no, we're not buying TC Electronic as a result of their merger with Gibson being called off which personally I think was a great big favour to TC Electronic!) and I decided to refrain from yet another delve into the back catalogue of Level 42 again and lighted upon Roxy Musics Flesh and Blood album in the 'ol iPhone. I used to play the life out of 'Same Old Scene' when it came out on cassette and so proceeded to play it since a recent reminder of just how good it is was made not so long ago when the BBC prog "Ashes to Ashes' was being aired. Excellent bass lines again and indeed through out the whole album. Anyone remember who was on bass then in the old Roxy? Sounds like the same guy on 'Avalon' which followed this album? Ciao Ian
I thought it was Gary Tibbs but according to the Wiki, it's Gary Tibbs on some tracks, a guy called Neil Jason who I've never heard of on a few and Alan Spenner on the others.. Follow this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flesh_%2B_Blood
 7.
I have one rule for transactions over £100 and it is... Whenever you buy things through an internet forum or ebay, have the courtesy to speak to the other person on the phone. This creates a real relationship and makes things a lot easier. Cheers, L
+1
 8. That seems like a very fair price to me for such a high quality instrument. Good luck with the sale!
 9.
You've got to add about 22% to the £600 for duty/vat and then probably about £75 for shipping So thats £600 plus £125 plus £75 = £800, which is a good deal
Definitely!
 10.
Nik, buying quality gear doesnt mean your a snob does it? Have I got it wrong? Oh Sh1t what am I then with my little band of warriors?
Not at all! You're a connoisseur, like many people here on Basschat. That is: 'A person with expert knowledge or training' or 'A person of informed and discriminating taste' I think that's a fair description, just like being a connoisseur of fine wines or fine art....
 11.
I give it a day before you come to your senses.
+1 You'll definitely regret it as this bass has some history to it as well as being an amazing instrument!
 12.
Thank you all. I am still mulling things over. I would LOVE to try them all but may have to just punt for one in the end. I have tried the tribute l2500 and they are good, just wondering if the american ones differ. (I assume they use same dimensions). If the stingray has the narrower string spacing I think thats got to be a fore-runner. I'm watching a few basses on evil-bay and there is a potential musicman in a well respected american store. The G&L is only £450 on ebay day to go, no bids. STILL lots to considder. Funny you mention the Roscoe beck, it caught my eye in the sale thread and there is one at a good price in the same store as the musicman. I love active but the beck is rather beautiful though..... oh man I thought I had it down to 4 basses and another option comes along.
There's a Roscoe Beck for sale second-hand at the moment in a UK shop??? Buy it now! They're discontinued and they don't come up for sale that often, so it'll be an investment as well as a great bass to play and own.
 13.
Having recently decided to upgrade my rig (from an Ibanez GSR through a Zoom B2 into the PA. Cheap as chips!), I went in expecting to spend about £2000. Having tried 6 amps and 17 basses, I came away with a MIM Jazz (plus new bridge and pickups), Ibanez SR300 and a Marshall MB 4210, so with the unexpected change, I'm buying a car to get to rehearsals! I tried lots of expensive basses, but those two felt right to me, and the Marshall gave the volume and tone I wanted. So each to their own, I just hope people are buying what is right for THEM, not because of what is written on the headstock or resale value.
+1 That's the important bit, getting what is right for you as a player. What feels right and what sounds right should come first. After that, looks come into it I suppose but for me, it's never been the brand of a bass or bass amp, it's the sound that matters. I used to have a '66 Fender Jazz which cost me a lot of money 15 years ago but I sold it on because I didn't like the sound of it, nor the way it played. In fact, I much prefered the sound and feel of the '84 Tokai Jazzsound that I had.. Having said all that, I do have a Wal, so I'm probably a bass snob just by virtue of owning that
 14.
So, RBV owners of basschat - what's the B like?
The low B on mine's excellent, thought it was slightly better on the nickel-wound set of strings I had before the Galli strings I've got on it now..
 15.
I knew you'd be on that, Nik!
Too right! My RBV is the bass find of the century as far as I'm concerned! I'd love another one but that'd just be greedy... wouldn't it??
 16. Having had both a Lakland DJ5 and a SR5, I think the first thing to say is that they are very different basses. The Lakland string spacing is 19mm and I think the SR5 is something like 17-18mm. doesn't soun dlike much but it is when you play it. Also, the DJ5 is a 35" neck as opposed to the SR5, which is 34" scale. The SR5's I've played have all had excellent low B's but then so did the DJ5. Problem is, with basses that are this different in feel, it'd be best to try before you buy.. but I realise that isn't always possible. I've also had a chance to play on a USA G&L2500 and one of the Tribute models too and they are great basses. More versatile tonally than the SR5 and I personally prefered that. From a value for money point of view, I don't think you could beat the Tribute L2500. Good luck with it!
 17.
Would love to, but unfortunately can't pursuade the wife
I'm totally with you on this one Pete - i kind of do the same when sitting in the car and the indicators are flashing... Machines are there to be 'metronomic' and humans are there to put in the feel and the swing..
 18.
Graham Gouldman
I always liked the short bass solo in "I'm Not In Love"... Great song and a brilliant record too...
 19.
Nik, you're always welcome in MK mate. You won't be leaving with any Precisions though! Chris PS the Flea has plenty of mojo so no heresy here
Thanks mate - might take you up on that one day soon on my trek back up north to see the relatives in Manchester.. Be good to see you and bask in the glow of all that mojo! Glad to hear the hand's on the mend, Nik
 20.
haha sure, give me a PM after friday if you still want it, i may not be on for a few days but it's yours (how old are you? )
I'm interested in the other stuff BB, especially as my son is obsessed with Harry Potter at the moment.. Let me know when you're back online after your move and I'll sort out some PayPal with you. Hope the move goes well!
 21.
Let it be known that Ian (SMART) is a very bad chap. Last Friday, as if he could read my mind, he emailed me a few pics. A couple of days later I was close to a month's salary less well off but one Modulus Flea to the good. I'd missed my old one terribly, despite being a bit of a solid and low down Precision sort at heart, the Flea kind of expresses the other & darker side of my character, the one that wants his bass to kick the sh*t out of guitarists, drummers and vocalists and show no mercy doing so I've been playing over 20 years and this is the only bass I've ever bought new. And it was worth every penny. Also, I can't tell you how impressed I was by Ian Morton who drove a few hundred miles to deliver it in person. A top bloke. Cheers Ian.
How you can justify a complete U-turn in bass-buying behaviour with a few charming turns of phrase, an easy going, likeable personality and a digital camera at your disposal is beyond me Chris! For us followers and supporters of your 'adventures-in-70s mojo' crusade, this is tantamount to heresy. I for one have lost all respect for you now and will have to drive to MK immediately to relieve you of your collection of P basses as punishment.... Lovely bass by the way!
 22. Great to see such positive stuff for Basschat members! I bought the magazine today and thought the Luke and Homer articles were really good! I especially enjoyed Homer's after gig tips Now I know Kaiu is a member too, I'll go back and read that article later.. Well done chaps and also to Matt & Mike @ BGM for giving people here such great support!
 23.
Well done! Good positive post, here! Gents take your cue from Kubickiboy!
+1
 24.
Neither am I - I have no idea what he means by that. Did someone disagree with him about something?
I think you'll find it all goes back to this:
Overrated by who? Without wishing to descend into an argument, does the wider world care what the posters on this thread think? Jaco, Jamerson, Mark King and the rest have made music that has entertained and been enjoyed by people all round the world. Have you?
To which I replied:
That's not the point, with respect.. The original post - by a member of Basschat, asked fellow Basschat members - who we thought were overrated. Therefore, it's a question about our opinions here, not about the achievements of the bassists in question out there in the 'wider world'.. So IMHO, it's just a harmless way to pass the time and definitely not a way to start arguements..
A perfectly reasonable answer I feel.. But, I think that matty589's toys have been steadily thrown out of the pram ever since... He's quick to dish it out and tell us all what to do and how to do it and that we're all useless twats etc, etc, but actually when it comes down to it, he can't take someone disagreeing with him or having a different point of view at all. As dlloyd said:
You're not really cut out for this discussion forum business, are you?
I'm not normally a confrontational or rude person but every now and again, there's times when it's best to be blunt.. So, matty589, why don't you pick all your toys up, put them back in your pram and p*ss off! Just my opinion of course
 25.
This is the irst time in my 25 years of playing that i am going to have 4 good basses at one time, but thinking what am i gonna do with them when i know my new status is going to be he one! If you guys have a fav that you use all the time, what do you do with the others??
Enjoy them for their different qualities when the mood takes you.. Variety is the spice of life, etc, etc...
