I always thought the modern C was a shallower curve. So the thickness from fingerboard to back of the neck was less.

I ended up buying a set of these They’re very light and have a very powerful lever. I nearly cut myself several times with these as they are so sharp. I think they’ll last a good while.

I’d settle for albums of previously unreleased material from any of them. At least I got to see a couple of them live. 😥

I picked up a guitar at about 13 or 14 to impress girls. Unfortunately all my mates were actually decent musicians so I ended up looking crappy by comparison (it’s fair, I was). A friend suggested I play bass but I had no idea about it and the strings felt too floppy after the guitar. Anyway I wanted to be front of stage soloing. I lived in a small village with no access to music teachers and my parents couldn’t afford the sax I wanted instead. I never put the time in on the guitar and just strummed until I was about 20 and then I just let playing music go for years. Thirty years later my wife decides to take up drums. I spent about a week mulling over my lack of commitment as a teenager. I still had my acoustic and I got it out and strummed but something didn’t feel right. I went to a music shop and picked up a bass. How could I have been so arrogant and stupid all those years ago! It felt like mine from the second I picked it up. Everything fell into place - the music I like is all driven by grooves. All this time I could have been playing, making friends and having fun! I’ve been playing just about everyday for 4 years now.

I’m was in two minds about Snarky Puppy. I went to see them in Glasgow last year to see what all the fuss was about. They call themselves a “jam band” and when they play live it’s all about the music. They might not have old school jazz credentials but they’re the authentic real deal.

There are tons (tonnes?) of great bands around just now. The problem is that the industry seems to be such an exploitative thing that only those willing to submit to its will get backed. Amazing bands fall through the cracks or exist on a hand to mouth basis. To discover the good stuff takes a bit more effort than it used to. Most radio stations default to trusted hits (6 Music being the exception). Have you listened to Airbag (Floydian band from Norway)? I can’t even remember where I found them. I probably did a Google search for “modern prog” or something after listening to Porcupine Tree. It’s harder to find these gems without a decent music press and only Jools Holland on TV.

Follow up question: anyone know what they use when you go for a manicure?

They’re nothing if not hygienic and presentable, but then again, they don’t have much to do.

Whenever I use scissors I always cut too short and end up with sore fingers. I really need clippers but thanks for replying. Interesting that you all use Swiss Army knives. Is the a trade secret?

This maybe an odd question, but... I like to keep the nails on both hands really short as I guess most of you do too. All the nail clippers I get from Boots or the supermarket go blunt really quickly and I gave to replace them. Any recommendations for where I can find decent clippers that’ll last?

What sort of stuff (modern) do you play? I really like fusion but I’ve only ever played rock, pop and Motown type stuff. I don’t own a fretless but I’ve been thinking about it recently. like you, I’ve been playing 4 years but with young kids etc. I don’t get as much practice time as I’d like.

According to Wikipedia he’s also played bass and guitar with the Blockheads. Thanks for the tip off about Frost*. I’m always on the lookout for new prog/fusion type bands to listen to.

He’s primarily a bassist but plays guitar for Level 42 because, you know, they got a guy who can play a bit already

If you can't showboat on the pyramid stage at Glastonbury when can you? I enjoyed it and they obviously did too. I've now added a natural finish deluxe to my shortlist for my next purchase. It won't make me sound like Jerry or Marcus but it'll look good and I'll want to pick it up. I think the tone was great.

I used to skip school to hang out in the old Andertons in the early 80s when Lee's dad John ran the place. I live in Edinburgh now but still have family in Guildford so dropped in last month and was impressed. At one point there were 3 of us in the bass room. It was tight but not too bad. One guy playing and two browsing. The amps were at the side with just a couple of stools in the middle. To be honest GuitarGuitar in Glasgow has a much wider selection and I get through there a lot with work but I prefer the way the bass has its own room with a door you can close at Andertons. They also have 3 or 4 smaller rooms which are probably meant for guitar but I expect they'd set it up for bass if the main room was already being used. I was amazed at how busy they were (and how young) . I'm going back at the end of July so I'll pop back as I'm beginning to choose my next bass from a list of about 8 to try.
