If you could choose only one compressor pedal
Rollin Thunder replied to dannybuoy's topic in Effects
Just got a brand new Pigtronix and first thoughts where its awfull, totally squashed and strangled all life out of the bass. put it back in box to send back. then i read instructions (doh) turns out i was using it all wrong, firstly plugged it into 9v rather than 18v (double doh) it will work at 9v but not properly, then i realised this is the first compressor that actually does what a compressor is meant to do and was not using it for what i want. now i get it and after a bit of playing around got exactly what i wanted from it. Set the volume to match at unity with amp, had compression set at about 10 o clock, sustain at 8 o clock. And bingo, got a rounder more defined sound a little cleaner volume boost and slightly thicker warmer sound without loss if tone and more note definition its only subtle but noticeable. Had to increase compression to around 11-12 when using more heavy Fuzz. Finally got what i want and finally get it. Think most of the other ones i have had are not trully compressors. This actually does what a compressor is meant to do. -

versatile amp does guitar acoustic and bass using presets, 30 + storage presets adjustable or patches can be downloaded, via fender fuse. great little amp for practice i use this for both electric at home and bass when i dont want to transport full bass amp. pick up Yorkshire, meet up available within reasonable radius of location.
I've been using my 2017 EB as the test-bed for getting a handle on the "flavours" of various DR strings.... Started with Hi-Beams.... Nickel Sunbeams... Then back to SS with Fat-Beams.... Now I've got the original Hi-Beams back on it. Still got Black Beauties to try, but wouldn't expect them to sound much different to the Sunbeams, as if I understand correctly, that's what they are, a nickel Sunbeam string plus the black coating..... Now it's setup for the lower tension of the DR round core strings, I'm really liking the lower tension "feel" of their round core round-wounds.
I have done something similar, but with Dr, Rotosound and Dunlops. I have found the Dunlop super bright nickles to be the best, get a brighter growl but loose not of the deep low end. using the master tone only can loose and increase the brightness to suit taste.
