  1. To be honest, a passive DI box of any sort will do the job. I;d be astonished if anyone could hear any difference between a £30 behringer and a £300 'specialised' brand. I bet if you bought a £30 behringer one, you'll still be using it in 30 years.

there where too many things I didn’t want to ear on my final sound (fret noise, string buzz and so on). When I placed the compressor after the EQ, my sound was much more natural and as I always wanted.

I would argue that is less natural. Fret noise is the natural sound!

  3. Must admit, I like to do both! Both pretty light, but the one at the end the lightest. For me, compression isn't an audio effect, it's more to get the bass strings feeling good. Couple of comps do a better job than one single one in my experience! If I had to just go for one though I'd say the input compressor is more important.

Absolutely pains me to say a Zoom MS60b

I’m going to change to a 70cdr because I keep running out of dsp.

But after years of avoiding Zoom it’s an incredible box.

    Really really annoys my snobbery

I firmly believe the ms60b will be a future classic!

Does it even matter that the emulations on a modelling multi-effects are "as good as the real thing"? Is the "real thing" really the pinnacle for that particular sound?

For instance, at the moment I'm working on patches for a couple of new songs. I like a good chorus and there are 5 discrete chorus effects on the Helix as well as some Flangers that can be tamed into chorus sounds and a couple of other modules that have Chorus parameters included. The one I pick won't have anything to do with how authentic it is, but the one that produces the right effect to fit with the other sounds in the arrangement.

I don't even use any amp or cab models on any of my bass patches and when I do they are normally chosen for the "drive" sound and tend to be guitar amps. Ultimately my choice of effects etc will be down to whether I like the sound coming out of the output and not about how close they are to the device they are supposed to be emulating.

Yep - although when I say 'as good as the real thing' it's more to do with no longer having that cheap and lifeless sound you got from older MultiFX over what you got from a real amp and real analogue pedals. Not that they are now perfect replicas to what they're modelling. Think only a true geek would be able to tell that difference.

You could still to this day use a zoom 506 and get a sound that works for your tune.... doesn't make it on the same level as the helix stuff.  Which reminds me. I've got a 506 under my bed, think i might crack it out for a wee play!

  6. I've picked Line 6  (HX stomp) as I use that as my main source of tone shaping, but I've also got a zoom Ms60b on my board - I've always liked the zoom stuff, and the Ms60b is a no brainer for anyone that has one spot left on their board- I actually think the filters react better to the bass than the ones on the stomp!

I know there's always been people saying that at every generation of MultiFX that they're as good as the real thing, but I genuinely believe the Helix generation of Multi's are actually at that stage now - especially with the IR tech available to us. Some of the guitar tones I've heard from guitarists on dep gigs who're using Helix's have been nothing short of incredible.

To date we have been rehearsing with me going direct using the band's PA.  To be fair, I made a dedicated Mesa 400+ based preset that does sound sweet and slots in the mix nicely.  Knowing the joys of going direct in my other band I would say going direct would work great as long as all gigs involve the band PA, but alas I have been advised that I should get an amp.  This would be DI'd as well, with much of the band using in-ears for monitoring etc which I will join in on probably.  I was prepared to purchase an amp anyway as there are benefits, and I will probably still use the helix for a few effects as necessary, and on standby to DI as a backup option.

If the band is going down the IEM route then amps are pointless and in fact make things worse. In my experience, it's best to get the stage noise as low as possible.

It sounds like you're needing an amp for monitoring only, so I would go the FRFR route, or a small 1x12 combo at most in all honesty.  Having to load in and load out a full stack every gig gets tedious pretty quickly!

  8. This entirely depends on your band's PA set up? If your PA is doing all the heavy lifting then your amp will be purely for monitoring, and therefore you really don't need a massive rig. If you high quality monitoring already then you really don't need an amp at all - let you Helix do it all.

  9. I don't have first hand experience but I wouldn't expect there to be  many small combos out there that would be a significant improvement over you Rumble.

I'd be tempted to get a multiFX rather than changing the amp. Could get a 2nd hand HX stomp for around 350, but the zoom stuff is much cheaper and excellent too. That will cover your distortion and much more. Plus the amp models will give you a bit of variety!

  10. I'm sure this has already been covered but if the tweeter is adjustable I'd do that. Or even try it with a different cab just to see if it's the cab that's emphasising the hiss.

Also... have you tried it out in the wild yet? A hiss at house volumes will seem far worse than once you actually crank the amp at a rehearsal or gig?

  11. Im a KZ ZS10 user. Not the pro or the pro X. I use memory foam buds, and I find them comfortable with an even sound throughout the frequency range. Can't say I've used many other IEM systems but these work perfectly for my needs so I've got no ambitions on upgrading any time soon. Although I will say when i bought them at first I thought they were pish.... they sat in a drawer for a year before I looked into getting new buds for them. The memory foam ones make such a difference.... I may look into getting fitted ones, but again, not anytime soon.

EBS Multicomp - I use one of these and I'm really pleased with it. I'm surprised that it doesn't get more recommendations but that seems to be the case with lots of the EBS stuff - including the amps - very under-rated in my opinion.

I owned one for a wee while and loved it. You wouldn't know its on, but yet you can feel it being on. Not sure if that makes sense, but hopefully it does! I only sold it on because space was at a premium so I went down a different route. I ran my comp at the start of the chain though, so dunno how it would work at the end like the OP wants.

  13. I go bass > small pedal board centred round hx stomp as preamp/cab sim.

This then feeds into an 11 quid passive DI box- thomanns own brand millenium di-e.. then straight to desk.

    Simple set up.

For monitoring I use a beringer ma400 headphone amp and KZ zs10 iems.

Apart from the actual pedal board itself, everything else is inexpensive but excellent on  sound, functionality and quality !

Not quite the same, but still a Series 6 model.
By chance I clicked on Facebook Marketplace early this morning , and this popped up for £120 - saying in the next town. Clicked on the ad, and it was in my village, about 30 houses down from me.
Messaged there and then, and bought it when I got home.
Last Trace gear I had was a Series 6 AH300 over 20 years ago. Wanted a Series 6 combo for rehearsals.

    Just the job

    That looks immaculate!

I don't know the TE model history.. completely oblivious to TE up until i got this one. might need to do a bit of research as they're seems to be alot of variations out there! I've no clue as to whether mines or yours were low, mid or high range when new, or even the eras they were made!

  15. I've got a cheapo thomann passive di velcroed to the underside of my pedal board. My preamp is a stomp and that doesn't have an xlr out so its handy having a di there. It gets used quite alot for other things so it's really quite handy!
