When you say more chunky, do you mean more space between the strings. Ive found the maple one to be easier to negotiate between the strings

No, front to back (depth). I always found (it’s been a while mind) the rosewood boarded necks to be shallower, at least on 4 string models. Things may have changed. If you find this maple boarded beauty easier to play, prefer the ceramic tone and like the aesthetics (and why wouldn’t you?), it sounds like it’s time to open the wallet. Happy days!

Aesthetically the maple neck is absolutely killing it for me. I love it. The ceramic pickups are pretty much 100% to the tone I want from a ray5.

Sounds like a decision made to me. I have to agree, that maple one looks stunning. If it’s as comfortable as the rosewood to play (personally, I have found EBMM maple ‘boards more chunky than rosewood ones, at least on 4 stringers) then go for it. Either way, it’s s nice dilemma to have.

Ah - but there's the rub.  Anyone who has seen my threads knows that while-ever it isn't finished, there's always the chance that I might still get it horribly, horribly wrong!

Yeah, right! Even if you do make a mistake, it'll be  seamlessly rectified and invisible. Then you'll add that to your knowledge database and share with us so that we can learn (or in my case go, "What, how did he do that?"). In the words of Wayne Campbell to Alice Cooper, "We're not worthy, we're not worthy."

  5. Oh my giddy aunt! You’d think after following a number of @Andyjr1515‘s builds and fixes that one would become inured to his level of talent, but this is not the case. Every project leaves me slack jawed in appreciation of his talents - and this one isn’t even finished! Well done, sir, well done 👏👏👏

  6. When I was looking for a 5 string some years ago, i spent hours at The Gallery in Camden, playing every 5 string that I could, both cheap and expensive. It was a 55-02 that I left the store with. Great bass, although ultimately I failed to gel with it long term. T’was ever thus.
