  1. As above, the feeling and groove is more important than the finer detail I think, unless it's a tribute band where authenticity is key.

Significant fills recognisable by Joe public should be prominent, but not slavishly so.

I've seen many function bands trying to sound exactly like the original, changing their sounds entirely between songs, and it tends to be rather chintzy.

Ty Segall knows how to do a good cover: rocky, fuzzy, keeping a distinctive riff but making the song his own:

  2. This does chime with my very limited experience switching between pre and post valve power section on my old amp to see what the power section offered.

The inevitable question is, given how we have got behind modellers such as the HX Stomp, is "what is a suitable power amp to go for?"

Is your 80s Jazz Special a Japanese one?

I can bring mine too and we can compare - I bet yours is nicer!

It is! Not in pristine condition by any means, plays very well though. Brand new excessively zingy roundwounds on which I'm trying to wear in. Might put some flats on it.

Would a single VK 210 real ly cut it with a loud drummer and no.PA support

There are others on here with more gigging experience using a VK cab, but from my one evening with a 210 and amp not even halfway up, I'd say 'yes'.

Just get a VK210 MNT (or possibly an LNT, although your DG won't need that much power handling) and you won't need a second cab. Your ears will totally love you. Job done.

+1 for this. I bought two for a discount and am in dire need to give them both a run, but the single 210 MNT I used at a pub gig was clear as a bell (with 500W SS amp).

  6. ------------- SOLD ------------------

    Evening all,

I acquired this not too long ago as a back up to my all-valve beast. The latter is now sold so this is not essential anymore.
I don't think this needs much of a spiel; it's a GK. It does THAT sound very well and is extremely well built.

There's a wee bit of marking on the top where items have been placed on it but it's in good nick aside from that.  If anyone requires a photo of the amp guts then let me know.

It comes with the snazzy GK case. It would make a lovely handbag if you're stuck for choice on your wife's next birthday. Tell her "GK is the new Prada" or something, you never know...

Also included is the power cord, footswitch and cable.

  7. I used mine for a pub gig the other night into a class D amp. Pretty happy with it; to my amateur ears the amp sim and compression alone justifies it, and I can simply adjust the amp EQ according to the venue. It's not simple to dial in like my old tube amp (patience and experimentation needed), but the convenience in moving and setting up for playing to a load of drunk Bristolians is well worth it!

I'd say get one online with a return guarantee and see how you fair with it.
