Well I remember reading something about how Fender felt threatened buy the high quality of the Tokai copies.

I'm probably the biggest fan of  MIJ . If I ever see a Tokai bass I'm buying it on the spot.

Don't suppose you know the a significance of the model numbers e.g going from JB 45 to 60 to 85 etc?

One would assume they have better hardware as numbers increase but assumptions can be dangerous....

Jvs are good, but not worth £900. They were a budget instrument - in the context of their time of manufacture, they were excellent, showing up the poor quality of some contemporary USA fender product. The Jazz basses were also the first reissues with a dot neck. I think a tokai from the same era is as good. I have 2 jv jazzes. One I bought at a year old in 1983 and another I bought new in 1984. I have a mid 80s tokai jazz also. At £5-600 a jv is a good buy imo.

I purely by chance tried a Tokai JB85 the other day; I was very impressed! I also see there's JB45 for sale near me, might have to have a look once I make some space....

Tough call, I would say. I have not played a Limelight but I have dealt with Mark and I know many people swear by them (as JV owners do too). I am not convinced that the JV's are pre-CBS investments in the making so my decision would be on which you enjoyed playing the most and don't pay too much attention to the 'aura' around them.

Yeah this Limelight feels great, really does. Just when someone popped up offering a JV it made me think....

  4. I thought I saw one on sale here but perhaps I was imagining it.

They seem to have a very good rep (the early to mid 80s ones at least).

Thoughts on value and how they compare with something of similar price like a used US Standard?

    Thanks

  5. SOLD

Acquired recently but I need to trim down for my house move. I'm looking for a sale but could be tempted by a swap should my other bass sell.....
Lots of chat about these, don't need to go on about it really - build quality and range of tones competes admirably with more expensive instruments. The upgrades make this a great gigging active jazz bass. No case is included so postage will need to be discussed, just ask - I do have a hard case for inclusion at extra cost.
There's some very positive chat on 'that other bass forum' about the NJ4s (60s wind, RRP £170) and the A Style Hipshot bridge (RRP £80) is a fine addition too.

It comes with Rotosound Roundwounds, but will include the almost-new DR Fatbeams it had on it also.

Minor damage to the finish is pictured.  I'm happy to provide more photos or video walk-through. I also have a fine selection of tea and coffee should you wish to try it out in Bristol :-)

  6. ---- SOLD ----

Aquired this in a trade, I now know road-worn instruments are my thing, but I'm going to be a bit short of space and I have a couple of instruments I need to move on.

This is a fine instrument from Limelight (check out the reviews online), stylishly 'reliced', comfortable neck (40mm nut width), vintage pickups and quality components. This is more than a match for pricier Fender road-worn instruments. A Gator hardcase is included, as well as a mirrored pickguard. I can send more photos or do a video walkthrough for a closer look.

Clearly the case is preferable for postage, but if you wish to collect or meet up and don't require the case then that can be arranged.
I'm not looking for specific trades but if I do sell my other bass, I could be interested in a swap.
Get in touch before I change my mind!

  7. Yes, both fair points. I think their recording was somewhat of a DIY affair with own instruments but there's always a possibility it's a borrowed instrument.

The P seems to be rare in appearance compared with the J.

I'm a novice with production stuff but I take the point about studio and mastering techniques.
