I’ve been thinking about trying to join a covers/function band. It would be nice to make a few extra quid playing music. Most ads I see state that your own transport is a must. I can’t drive and don’t really see me learning any time soon. So I’m just curious as to basschatters’ experience and/or opinions on this. Can it be done without a car? Well actually, I know it can, because my bass teacher does it, but I’m still curious as to what other people think.

Just for a laugh. https://soundcloud.com/joeshier/badinerie

I have two Ps and no Jazzes (or anything else). I'm 99% sure my next purchase will be another P. There's definitely no logic involved.

The VM Jaguar does. https://www.rimmersmusic.co.uk/vintage-modified-jaguar-bass-special-rosewood-fingerboard-3-color-sunburst-includes-gigbag-p33583?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=squier-vintage-modified-jaguar-bass-special-rosewood-fingerboard-3-032-8900-500&utm_campaign=product%2Blisting%2Bads&gclid=COKk2ubEvtICFQw4GwodYdgMrw

I've used them at rehearsals and I find them a bit lacklustre. Nice and portable though.
-
I'd be more than happy to do that for you, but wouldn't be able to do so until early next week. If the bass is still there and you haven't found anyone else by then, let me know.

Does anyone make P Bass pickup covers, thumb rests and knobs in bright/unusual colours? I'm thinking I'd quite like to take an all black P bass and give it a sort of Steve Vai vibe.
-
My bathroom scales tell me that my Matt Freeman weighs about 9lb. I'm surprised because it feels quite light to me. I guess my other P must be even heavier. Either way, it's an absurdly awesome bass. I'd read/heard all the praise out there and was still blown away when I finally got my hands on one. I paid £200 - you really can't go wrong!
If you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for one in the end?
I paid £200 for it. There are a few dings in the finish but nothing major. It sounds fantastic as it is but I'm going to try a Quarter Pounder in it just out of curiosity. The tuners on the MIM feel better to me, but other than that, there's very little in it.
Slap some dimarzio model p's in it ,a nice gotoh 201 bridge and some better tuners and it's a bass that cannot be beaten .........Like my main player ;-) . Good score, I absolutely love mine and don't think I would ever get rid.
Indeed, the tuners might be the closest thing this bass has to a flaw. Which ones would you recommend?

Here are mine. A Squier Matt Freeman and a Fender MIM.

Yup, the hype is completely justified, it's flawlessly put together. Played a VM in the shop the other day and the difference is huge.

Thanks again to everyone who has sent me messages helping me to find one of these. In the end, I was talking to a guitar shop employee and mentioned I was after one, and rather than trying to sell me something they actually had in stock, he showed me a facebook post he'd seen about a used one for sale. Some people are so nice. I snapped it up today - it's got the odd ding here and there, but it's only going to end up with more. I got it as a back-up for my beloved MIM P. They look particularly great together - I'm thinking about cream pickup covers for the Squier to complete the effect!

Kit Built Guitars - anyone tried them
Rexel Matador replied to GarethFlatlands's topic in Bass Guitars
That's part of it but as I've never done any DIY at home (rented accommodation for years so no need) I own very few tools. Anything in the kit that would need work, I'd probably have to go and buy and learn to use them. That's the main thing stopping me taking a punt at the moment.
Regarding tools, one possibility would be to see if there is a hackspace near you. If you're not familiar with the concept, they are communally run maker spaces, where you can become a member for a modest subscription (often you can decide how much depending on how much you can afford, how much you use it etc), and then you can go there and use all manner of expensive tools that you wouldn't otherwise be able to afford. *Also* you will probably meet people there who can give you advice on how to use them. I used to be a member of one in Brighton and dabbled in guitar building there. I used jigsaws, bandsaws, sanders, drill presses, blowtorches, routers etc etc, that I would never have been able to afford otherwise. I've now found one in Newcastle and am excited to get involved again. If you are, as your profile suggests, in Sheffield, I just had a quick google and it seems there's definitely one there. -
it's 3/4 length which might explain the cost ?
Where are you seeing that? As far as I can see it says 34".

Just came across this - a new, very affordable, Fender P-Bass. http://www.pmtonline.co.uk/fender-special-edition-noir-redline-precision-p-bass It doesn't seem to have been mentioned on here yet. Thoughts? It's an unusual look and I can't decide if I like it. I really want a black p bass at the mooment but I feel like the red would bother me. Also, I can't help but think a Fender logo at that price suggests corners being cut somewhere, quality-wise. Am I being overly cynical? Maybe it's the next Matt Freeman!
-
I’m thinking about buying a Classic Vibe 70s p bass (because I really want a Matt Freeman and it seems to be the closest thing still readily available), but I don't like the block inlays. Is there anyone out there who really likes block inlays and might be up for doing a neck swap with me? I’d ideally like something like you’d find on the Freeman (maple, gloss, etc), but would consider anything of equivalent quality, even a jazz neck if it fits. The idea of ending up with something a slightly unique is rather appealing. I figure there's no harm in asking as, from reading around on the forums, some people really do seem to dig those blocks.

Wandering grub screw or Poltergeist - Fender 50's P.
Rexel Matador replied to Raslee's topic in Bass Guitars
Loctite 222 low strength thread locker - strong enough to hold it but not so strong you can't undo it. The saddles on my Ibanez were vibrating themselves right down after a couple of hours of aggressive picking and I wasn't sure this stuff would be up to the job, but it 100% fixed it. Weird that it's happening while you're not using it though! -
I just stumbled across this video: It's got to be the worst sounding bass guitar I've ever heard. What were they thinking?
-
Not sure about the demanding bass-lines bit, but Duff McKagan has to be the coolest looking bassist there is.
You beat me to it! I find it's quite hard to not look cool holding a bass. In terms of effortless chops I would go for Matt Freeman. Steve Harris looks cool by virtue of not caring about looking cool. Anyone here heard of Propagandhi? Their bass player, Todd Kowalski, is one of the most energetic performers you will ever see and he plays like a beast too.

My hard rock band (Speeder) have our first ever gig at the Cluny, Newcastle upon Tyne, on Saturday February 4th, supporting Western Sand. More details on the poster below! Us: https://www.facebook.com/speederband Them: https://www.facebook.com/westernsand A cross between Motorhead and Iron Maiden would get you somewhere in the vicinity of what we sound like. If you follow the link above there should be plenty of tunes to listen to though.

De-fretting my Ibanez question

Good call, I think I have some left over from filling the fret slots! -
De-fretting my Ibanez question
Rexel Matador replied to Rexel Matador's topic in Repairs and Technical
Thanks guys, that's very helpful. I'll err on the side of caution and I can always take more off if need be. Grangur, I agree, I was planning to go at the bottom of the nut rather than the slots. The slots are good as they are and probably a lot easier to mess up! -
You could add a thumb rest in any position you like.
