1. I want to record an album of old blues songs to sell or give away at gigs. I can’t make head nor tail of the information I’m seeing online regarding where I’d stand copyright-wise. I’ve seen other blues acts selling CDs including mostly covers of old songs. Do people just do it and hope nobody catches them out or are people going through the whole process of looking into licensing songs etc? It’s mostly pre-1950 country blues type stuff. Does anyone have any experience with this type of thing?
2. Cool, I'll message you back on fb. The band is brand new, so no outgoing bassist. I play bass in another band, but I'll be on guitar/vox in this one.
3. We are the Harp-Sick Horde, a brand new electric blues band based in Newcastle. We play ragged 'n' dirty rocked-up covers of the early blues greats - Blind Boy Fuller, Reverend Gary Davis, Brownie McGhee, Floyd Council, John Lee Hooker, you get the idea... We currently consist of a singer/guitarist and a drummer, (bass player TBC) so need a harp player to round out the sound. It would add another dimension to the sound and the show, and take some pressure off our single guitarist (me) solo-wise. Check out the facebook page at www.facebook.com/theharpsickhorde where there are some videos to give you an idea of the sound we're going for. There's no harp on any of the demos - that's where you come in! And if you want more, there are a bunch of demos in the same style at https://www.youtube.com/user/rexelmatador/videos Any questions just ask. A gig on 29th September is already in the works, so let's get to it!

We love bouncy melodic walking basslines, something that can really support and augment the single guitar. 5.
Which model Zoom did you go for?
I went for the G1on. Cheap and cheerful but adequate for my needs. I've played out with it a couple of times already and it does the job admirably. I only really use an amp sim and a touch of reverb.
6. Thanks for the tips. I've gone with a zoom for now, just to get up and running, but that Laney contraption looks thoroughly badass and it will be first in line when I'm able to upgrade!
7. Hi everyone, When I'm not playing bass, I play solo acoustic blues type stuff. I'm thinking of trying a hollow body electric to give it a little more grit, and just to change things up a bit. What kind of DI/preamp/pedal would I be able to carry around in my case so I can just rock up to an open mic night without an amp and get a reasonable sound plugging straight into the desk? Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated :-) Thanks!
8. Thanks everyone, very helpful as ever 🙂
9. I’ve been thinking about trying to join a covers/function band. It would be nice to make a few extra quid playing music. Most ads I see state that your own transport is a must. I can’t drive and don’t really see me learning any time soon. So I’m just curious as to basschatters’ experience and/or opinions on this. Can it be done without a car? Well actually, I know it can, because my bass teacher does it, but I’m still curious as to what other people think.
10. Just for a laugh. https://soundcloud.com/joeshier/badinerie
11. I have two Ps and no Jazzes (or anything else). I'm 99% sure my next purchase will be another P. There's definitely no logic involved.
12. The VM Jaguar does. https://www.rimmersmusic.co.uk/vintage-modified-jaguar-bass-special-rosewood-fingerboard-3-color-sunburst-includes-gigbag-p33583?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=squier-vintage-modified-jaguar-bass-special-rosewood-fingerboard-3-032-8900-500&utm_campaign=product%2Blisting%2Bads&gclid=COKk2ubEvtICFQw4GwodYdgMrw
13. I've used them at rehearsals and I find them a bit lacklustre. Nice and portable though.
14. I'd be more than happy to do that for you, but wouldn't be able to do so until early next week. If the bass is still there and you haven't found anyone else by then, let me know.
15. Does anyone make P Bass pickup covers, thumb rests and knobs in bright/unusual colours? I'm thinking I'd quite like to take an all black P bass and give it a sort of Steve Vai vibe.
16. My bathroom scales tell me that my Matt Freeman weighs about 9lb. I'm surprised because it feels quite light to me. I guess my other P must be even heavier. Either way, it's an absurdly awesome bass. I'd read/heard all the praise out there and was still blown away when I finally got my hands on one. I paid £200 - you really can't go wrong!
17.
If you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for one in the end?
I paid £200 for it. There are a few dings in the finish but nothing major. It sounds fantastic as it is but I'm going to try a Quarter Pounder in it just out of curiosity. The tuners on the MIM feel better to me, but other than that, there's very little in it.
18.
Slap some dimarzio model p's in it ,a nice gotoh 201 bridge and some better tuners and it's a bass that cannot be beaten .........Like my main player ;-) . Good score, I absolutely love mine and don't think I would ever get rid.
Indeed, the tuners might be the closest thing this bass has to a flaw. Which ones would you recommend?
19. Here are mine. A Squier Matt Freeman and a Fender MIM.
20. Yup, the hype is completely justified, it's flawlessly put together. Played a VM in the shop the other day and the difference is huge.
21. Thanks again to everyone who has sent me messages helping me to find one of these. In the end, I was talking to a guitar shop employee and mentioned I was after one, and rather than trying to sell me something they actually had in stock, he showed me a facebook post he'd seen about a used one for sale. Some people are so nice. I snapped it up today - it's got the odd ding here and there, but it's only going to end up with more. I got it as a back-up for my beloved MIM P. They look particularly great together - I'm thinking about cream pickup covers for the Squier to complete the effect!
22.
That's part of it but as I've never done any DIY at home (rented accommodation for years so no need) I own very few tools. Anything in the kit that would need work, I'd probably have to go and buy and learn to use them. That's the main thing stopping me taking a punt at the moment.
Regarding tools, one possibility would be to see if there is a hackspace near you. If you're not familiar with the concept, they are communally run maker spaces, where you can become a member for a modest subscription (often you can decide how much depending on how much you can afford, how much you use it etc), and then you can go there and use all manner of expensive tools that you wouldn't otherwise be able to afford. *Also* you will probably meet people there who can give you advice on how to use them. I used to be a member of one in Brighton and dabbled in guitar building there. I used jigsaws, bandsaws, sanders, drill presses, blowtorches, routers etc etc, that I would never have been able to afford otherwise. I've now found one in Newcastle and am excited to get involved again. If you are, as your profile suggests, in Sheffield, I just had a quick google and it seems there's definitely one there.
23.
it's 3/4 length which might explain the cost ?
Where are you seeing that? As far as I can see it says 34".
24. Just came across this - a new, very affordable, Fender P-Bass. http://www.pmtonline.co.uk/fender-special-edition-noir-redline-precision-p-bass It doesn't seem to have been mentioned on here yet. Thoughts? It's an unusual look and I can't decide if I like it. I really want a black p bass at the mooment but I feel like the red would bother me. Also, I can't help but think a Fender logo at that price suggests corners being cut somewhere, quality-wise. Am I being overly cynical? Maybe it's the next Matt Freeman!
