My brother (record dealer) once put a cheeky bid on 10,000 I sorted 7” singles. Two days later a pallet turned up and unloaded 10,000 unsorted 7” records. Ever since then I’ve avoided a cheeky bid on anything!

So should I! I’ve always been too scared to bid too much. I set a limit and that’s it, but I can see how it’s easy to get sucked into the whole thing. If they money has been legitimately obtained then fair play to whoever bought it. If it makes them happy, can’t be that bad (Sheryl Crow)

I was the OP! Just checked out the sale record and it was £14k before fees. My memory is awful.

Fair enough. Seems utterly preposterous to me, but it seems even at that price there’s some margin in it. Action was high and the old girl had seen better days. What makes me smile is the thought of the owner (or more likely the owners’ family) getting a call explaining how the bass sold for 10 times the estimate.

That’s before the 33% commission. So total sale price is a £18,620.

Ahh were you there as well? I’ve bought a few bits from those guys and they’re really lovely.

All of the basses you’ve mentioned will require a pickup. You’ll get no usable acoustic tone from an Eminence for example, but with a pick up it sounds great. In my experience, no EUB will deliver any sort of usable acoustic signal (aside from the Czech Ease, which isn’t an EUB but a cut down big dog). I have an MK Jazz which provides a wonderful tone with a pickup. And I’m selling it to, so feel free to message me.

I did think part of it was auction fever. I’ve seen old Fenders being sold for that, but not Ricks.

I attended an auction today (Dore and Rees) and picked up a few bargains. I was interested in a 1966 Rickenbacker until the price went above £10,000. I think the hammer fell at £11,000, with auctioneers commission of 33%. That’s the best part of £14,000. Are they that rare? It was a bit of a magical moment in the sale room (I was online, but even so).

Where are you based? These sound like a lot of fun for winter but depends where you live.

The only people who care about the brand of guitar you’re playing are other musicians. I just picked up a Squier Precision Special (matching headstock), and it’s genuinely phenomenal. Needed a few tweaks but it looks great and sounds amazing. It’s genuinely as good as any of the Mex Fenders I’ve had, although I would say that it’s been set up very well and played in. Music snobs are frightfully dull.

I’ve always been told you can fix any wood break or split but this looks terminal to me!

Ahh. The effects loop thing worked! So the amp is fine, it’s just the jack socket (or the preamp).

Good question! I’ll check. Most amp techs here will charge you £40 to take a look, so not really worth it. But if someone knows what they’re doing, it could be?

This is a Marshall 30 watt combo. It powers up but when you plug in an instrument it just buzzes. I’d love to fix it but who am I kidding, it won’t happen. collection from Bristol or it goes to the tip on Sunday.

What bass is 280cm? There are safe limits to transport stuff, and you won’t find a commercial carrier that will take this.
