1. I wondered this about pickup covers a while back, but I never really searched that hard. In the end I just sprayed a black set, one blue one red. They're aged already having been on for about 6 months, but they still look good from a distance. I'll post a picture tomorrow.
2. Ah, it probably would have been better if I had remembered to post the link in my previous post, it may have helped a bit! That's what I was trying to show you, just the larger cutout, similar to Scott Devine's Overwater in a way. Also, I'm not sure if this as been said, but make sure you get on with the Luthier on a personal level. It'd be a long tiresome project if you were had a clashing personality with the person building your bass, and also the finished product probably wouldn't be perfect for you.
3.
I was thinking more along the lines of a Stingray based instrument with a smoother/more accessible neck-body joint (a la Scott's Precision) and a smoother more rounded sound and switchable actives. Kind of modern active P-J meets a 1990s Stingray neck profile and body dimensions and a nice translucent finish. Not complicated or super exotic, but not available off the shelf either. Need to sell my Jazz Fretless first though!
Take a look here for some examples of Jon's p basses. Some of them sound quite similar to what you are describing, so it may be worth a look -The white one near the bottom in particular. It would also be worth talking to a few of the luthiers to see what they can do with the idea. Good luck with the Jazz bass, hopefully it'll sell fast, after all, everyone needs a fretless Jazz bass!
4. According to their website, a standard J series Overwater starts at 2 grand, so I'd assume a p bass would be similar. If fancy electronics and quiet pickups are your thing, then you can't beat Overwater, but if you are looking for a very well built p bass, I recommend Jon Shuker, just from my experiences. Being honest though, no matter who you choose from the suggested names, you're guaranteed a very high quality product, and very good service.
5. It's a little delayed but I thought I'd share my latest acquisition. It's a Squier Affinity Jazz bass with a custom Shuker neck, and is also my first go at a fretless. It's safe to say I love it, and I'm definitely enjoying the flexibility of no frets! So the backstory is that I've been wanting to try fretless for a while, but couldn't justify buying another bass, especially as I had my first Squier that no longer got used. I contacted Jon having spent a while with one of his J basses, then 2 months later, I had this in my hands, all in time for Christmas? Here are the specs... Maple neck - shaped to match my P bass Rosewood board Edge lines Schaller tuners Strung with D'Addario Chromes I've already got plans to upgrade the bass further by swapping out the electronics, fitting DiMarzio Model J's, and maybe swap the pick guard for a black one. I'll keep this thread updated with any modifications! All the photos were taken by Jon, as they are better than anything I could take!
6. Great to hear, post some pictures when you get the neck. That reminds me, I should post pictures of mine.
7. +1 for Jon's work. He recently built a fretless neck for my Squier, and I love it. It cost less than an equivalent Fender neck, and he measured and copied the shape of my p bass neck. Can't recommend him enough!
8. Looks great, I love Jon's work. There's going to be another thread like this soon, as he's just finished building a new neck for my Squier!

Very nice indeed!
10. I'd send an email over to Jon Shuker to get a quote. I've got one of his basses and the work is exceptional, and the prices are very good, so much so that I'm planning on getting him to build a fretless neck. He'll also be able to do whatever sort of routing you want, so you'll be able to get their perfect body. http://www.shukerguitars.co.uk
11.
Yup. they have a universal power supply... But then a look at the mesa web site would have told you that :-)
That would've been a good idea! I can't help but get drawn to all the pictures on their site, so I'll blame it on that. Looks like I can save myself a little bit of money then, so that's always good! Thanks very much!
12. I have a quick question about the D800 as I'm really interested in getting one, but the prices over here do seem a lot. I have the chance to buy one in America and then bring it back but obviously with the different voltages of mains power, I may not be able to use it in England? I know that some companies use variable power supplies etc, so all that needs replacing is the fuse, but I have no idea if the D800 works like this. In short, is it possible to use an American bought D800 in the UK? Thanks!

Backing Tracks

Cheers, I've checked out that website and the problem seems to be that Less Than Jake aren't an overly well known band, with my song of choice being even lesser known. I'll persevere though, and see what I can do.

Backing Tracks

Thanks for the help, I'll check that website out! Leeds College of Music, Hull and BIMM are my main choices. As I've not been offered anything yet I've only got limited information, but so far from what I can find Leeds want me to prepare two pieces. One technical focus and one to show off me. BIMM want one piece to be prepared, again one that isn't necessarily too technical but one that I can really get into. I have been told by a lecturer that I will be asked to show off different techniques, scales and theory aside from the piece(s). I'm guessing I should probably wait to see if anywhere wants me to audition, and until they send further information, it's just that I want to be as prepared as possible. By the way the courses are all Popular Music if that makes any difference. Also, at Leeds there is a group section for the audition, where I believe you are put into some form of band to see how you work with others. This doesn't require any preparation, but maybe I'll be tested on charts here? You also get 30 mins of warm up time before the individual section, which seems a lot to me. This could also involve some charts/side Readings?
15. Firstly, I'm not too sure if this is the right place for this topic, but I'll give this a go anyway... I'm applying to uni to study music and therefore will need to audition in order to get in. I have chosen some pieces that I think will show off my playing as well as the type of music I'm into. My first piece is a solo bass composition, so in the audition room there will be no problems. However the other piece(s) are songs that I will be playing the bass line to. What you guys do in order to get a high quality backing track (preferably with lyrics, but I can't imagine this is possible) without the bass? The piece in question at the moment is Plastic Cup Politics by Less Than Jake. Thanks
16.
Lovely bass mate, congratulations! Can you give us more info on the THD circuit?... Cheers, Eude
Rather than one continuously variable tone pot, it is a five-way selector with presets for the tone. I believe there is an individual capacitor for each setting. It basically just makes the tone control more useable rather it being on, off or somewhere in middle. Hope that helps
17. I've had this bass for a few days now and have finally got round to taking some pictures so here it is! It's a Shuker J Bass Custom, and had been waiting for a buyer for a while, so when I took my Fender P to Jon for a fret level (which cost half what I was quoted by a local luthier, and the work was impeccable), I thought I'd have a play, and then I had to buy it! The feel of the bass is far superior to any bass I've played before, including Sadowsky Metros and American Fenders. The Aaron Armstrong pickups are lovely and along with the THD tone circuit and coil splitting switch I am able to get a whole range of tones, from vintage sounding through to modern hifi tones. The carbon reinforcement in the neck is also a big plus for me. I'd recommend Jon to anyone, whether you want a bass to be built or just some form of setup. His work is fantastic and his prices are great. I mean, I got a hand built instrument for less than a Fender or Gibson! Here are some more pics anyway... A bit blurry but you can see the grain and the stainless steel frets! There we have it, my new bass!
18. Great example of a 70's Jazz bass, just wish I had the funds haha. Good luck with the sale, it's a lovely bass!
19. I recently bought Karl's Jazz Bass Special, which I have to say is a fantastic instrument. He was more than willing to meet halfway, which made the collection process incredibly simple, whilst also removing the worry of a courier. I would very happily buy from Karl in the future as the sale went so smoothly; just a day after the bass was put on hold, I had it in my hands! Thanks once again Karl!
