I don't feel like a single stereo jack is capable of running a mono signal and an expression pedal input.

I get confused when there's more than one ring, but I feel it's not that simple and the manual may be being misinterpreted there...

Expression is on the send jack and fx loop is on the return using a trs cable.

That's my take on it. The "Growl" knob is the "pokey/synthy" type of octave, the "Girth" is the more organic "fat/sub" kind of octave. Really useful having them on separate knobs and being able to fine tune the amount of each. The Aguilar Octamizer does the same kind of thing, but they are combined onto one knob as a "filter" that goes from subby and fat, to more synthy and pokey as you dial it up. Both pedals are fantastic, and I really like the mid boost switch on the MXR. I went for the Aguilar and love it so much I bought a second one, like Steve said, for being able to have blended and sub only options at my feet without having to change settings.

Sounds like I’ll be selling the T-16 and Pearl then 😅

Isn’t the left knob of the BOD their take on a oc2 type octaver and the right knob a EBS style octaver?

It maybe be I have to spend more time with it 😅

What do you think of the Pearl OC-07; do you know, by any chance, how it compares to the OC-2 sound and tracking wise?

It will be a few weeks before I have them all in-front of me.

Far as I know the Pearl tracks like the OC2, its the original John Davis Nerve sound, just the oc2 is more robust for the road so he ended up moving to that.

I had one 10-15 years ago but I wasn’t as familiar with using octaves for synth sounds, now I’m excited to try it again and see how it fairs against the more common suspects.

I have been using MXR bass octave deluxe. Like it. It would be nice to hear some of your reviews about it also.

My thoughts on octavers are there are generally two types, the more accurate natural sounding mxr bod, aguilar octomizer etc and then the really synthy OC2 type, that the Pearl and I assume T-16 fall into.

As it’s so hard (expensive) to find an octaver that is footswitchable between mixed and 100% wet, I find it’s easier to have two.

So far (and I haven’t played my recent BOD but I’ve had 2 previously) this is most musical and natural sounding octave I’ve played. I’m heavily inspired by Michael League’s use of his and that’s why I’ve picked up another.

Then the T-16 and Pearl are going to fight it out, it’ll probably come down to space/size but I’m keen to see if they beat out my Sonicake Octaver which (to me) is a very accurate OC2 clone for next to nothing.

Attached is the route I’m thinking, only the oc2 would be the pearl and the phat phuk the Cream Pie Deluxe (as neither are on the planner). I don’t need it all at once but it’s melting my brain trying to find a way to have small pedal boards for little projects here and there when I’d like all those creative options just there to indulge when it suits.

To keep inline with the thread, my latest pedal purchase is a Mojo Hand 442 filter, my favourite but I’ve so far only been able to track down the guitar version 🤷‍♂️ probably fine, worst case I think it’s a simple mod to make it the bass/red version.

Deco v2 I’ve had sat for like 4 months waiting for me to grab it.

Capo is the third I’ve owned and relatively new to me.

    Bod as above

Wetter box I need to buy and I’m still deciding if this is excessive, mainly depends on if I stick with the capo and deco.

Pearl (shown as an oc2) as above

Just bought this modded OC2 from here. I wanted a single pedal which I could throw in the loop of my Meatball filter to give an octave synth sound, so this is perfect as it gives both octaves with a delicious fuzz which pairs with the filter perfectly.

Nice I bought the Cog T16 and The Pearl Octave

Also have an MXR Bass Octave Deluxe inbound so can have another shootout and decide my preference.

  6. I think it’s a very valid point and at the very least helps you separate gear into what is (potentially) an investment and what is and will always just be a tool.

I have a few things that I know won’t be fully functional in 10-20 years time (Boss Katana Go, Darkglass Element) I just take comfort in knowing that I’ll have sold them 5 times over by then.

But at this moment in time they solve an issue and provide a convenience.

As more and more pedals go digital and require apps to access deeper functions we’ll see this becoming more and more of an issue.

For example the Digitech istomp, sure it’ll work with whatever the last effect you loaded on it but you’ll never load something else on.

What about TC toneprints if they ever discontinue the app?

How will you upload presets to the pedal when your phone is just a chip in your head?

And when you’re spending £1400 on a Quad Cortex it’s good to remember that in 5 years time it might be worth £600…… at best

    Mandela effect…

ha. See what I did there.

i used one of these years ago and recall a certain sound it did. I’m not sure it does it 🫣

Hoping for a sample and hold filter?

this was my first multi fx….. I don’t miss it 😅

  8. Mint condition, boxed with manual.

Great sounding full range boost, definitely a clean boost but not wholly flat, definitely got something going on. Also works as a nice buffer, I’ve seen some instagram posts of Sean Hurley using one, which is what attracted me to it in the first place.

Sounds really great pushing other pedals.

Open to trades and looking for a Tone Factor/Mojo Hand Cream Pie (plus cash from me)

  9. So full disclosure I bought it as part of this set

and essentially think of it as costing me nothing, however it has cost me. I spent £45 on the repair, £6 on shipping and £4.50 on return shipping. I just want back what it owes me, else it’s probably better sitting in a drawer just in case.

This is about as small as you’re going to get a pedal, let along a parametric eq. It sounds great and fits in the smallest space on a board. I’ve used it on one gig as a boost and it performed great, though you do get a bit wary of having so many small pedals bunched together.

Ultimately I now have 2 of my favourite boosts, a clone of it and a 1590a clone coming to take the place of this on the board.

No offers but I am open to trades.

  10. Gonna throw out an alternative here.

Use a light overdrive with a slight volume dip for the main sound and then turn it off for the parts you’re thinking would suit the distortion. The jump in volume and fullness of signal might cut quite nicely 🤷🏻‍♂️

Might be what you need is a phat clean in those moments and you can get away with quite a lot of saturation the rest of the time smoothing out that sound.

I know, but if I move them up, the jacks don't fit through the gaps in the pedalboard. I'm not going to lie, I'm already considering moving up to the 3.0 and getting some more pedals in the mix while I'm experimenting.

This RB 2.1 is just a touch too small. The perfect compact gig board would be a 2.2, with a hole cut out to mount one of the RB Mod patch bays. That'd leave enough room for this, plus a fun pedal like the OC5 or maybe an HX One.

Just picked up The Accountant and Opus for a compact board. Still not got velcro on etc.

Really liked the power amp simulation available on Two Notes Genome so decided to bite the bullet and grab the Opus. This will be perfect for a couple of musical project potential on the horizon, the QC is great but it makes for a big board once Ive added some extra pedals.

Nudge that tuner up to the top of the board and it can all squish up a bit more and you might be able to avoid the overhang that I know is bothering you.

Yeah, I recently got one and it is really good for that. My only issue is I use it as 'always on' for the lower-gain EQ mode and I need to stomp somethign on for a few more distorted parts. Another DCX would do nicely...don't think I can justify that extravagance though!

    Sure you can 😇

I'm looking for a medium-gain sort of distortion that still keeps the punchy 'thump' of a clean Bass when played through an Amp/Cab.

I'm pretty sure I already know the answer is 'pedal with clean blend' and 'use an LS-2'.  Problem with that is I find it sounds like two things playing at the same time.

    Any suggestions?

I'm almost at the point of giving up on it. The band has 2x guitarists guitarist and it feels that when we go to more heavy/distorted parts of songs it'd be good for the Bass to switch up to to a distorted sound as the guitarists do. Problem is, I've tried dozens of distortion pedals and they sound fine at home/headphones etc but with a band I think just the nature of distortion means the punchy sort of thump gets mushy and distorted (I guess the clue is in the name!)  - in isolation that sounds all good and heavy, but with a band all going for it it actually loses some impact. Perhaps just stick to the punchy thump of bass and leave it to guit@ri$ts to the distortion stuff?

Can relate to you massively on this. I found my solution to be an IR loader (obviously still need the distortion pedal and really you do still want the blend on it), or at least for picking my sound for live use.

So I recently got a Darkglass Element and it’s been an absolute revelation. I spent a while finding an IR and eq that gave me the sound I try and get out of preamp (which is just me rolling quite a lot of highs) and I’ve ended up with 2-3 settings where the “clean” sounds pretty much the same across all of them but any distortion is wildly different depending on how much high the cab is allow.

So this would be my first recommendation, I think the Element is incredible, I now own two and it’s my di, IEM mixer, IR loader, eq, practice headphone rig, etc etc, so using something like that to dial in the sound at home through headphones. Then I would look at something like the Kasleder Albatross, Lusithand Ground and Pound or Backburner Big Booty Judy

    https://kaslederfx.com/albatross/

https://bassbros.co.uk/product/lusithand-alma-comp-mkii/ - Though you may want the newer model

    https://backburnernoise.com/products/big-booty-judy

The latter two are both rat clones, which I’ve really started to appreciate in the mix with my JHS Punchline, but it has to have the clean blend and it has to run into some sort of cab simulation for me to dial it in.
