Theory/Reading music - Where should I start?
AinsleyWalker replied to AinsleyWalker's topic in Theory and Technique
Well, I linked it because it is here and pinned on Basschat but maybe it's too difficult but maybe if you worked at it you 'll make some progress. Did you read the major's introduction?
Yeah I mean, I read through the whole thread and downloaded the links but my problem is that I'm at the very beginnings of learning to read. Whereas this seems to start from a point of someone who has already been taught the basics and is now practicing what they know. Which might come in handy at another point, cheers
Lessons are a good idea. I good teacher should have a few different ways to explain something. It needn't be a bass teacher, I learned loads at uni from guys who were primarily pianists.
Yeah I did have a few guitar lessons years ago from a family friend and we scratched the surface of reading but I don't remember any of it, I'm sure he'd be able to teach me some stuff if I got in touch again.
The Major-Minor thread is excellent. Another great tool if you're starting from absolute scratch, Stuart Clayton's Bass Essentials - Reading Music series, can't recommend these enough https://www.bassline...nner-level.html
I'll check this out at some point, thanks! -
Theory/Reading music - Where should I start?
AinsleyWalker replied to AinsleyWalker's topic in Theory and Technique
Either I'm looking at the wrong thing but Session 1 includes two files. One is sheet music and one is a track... The whole point is that I can't read yet, so I'm not sure how I'm supposed to progress from there... -

I've been playing bass (and guitar) for about 6 or 7 years now. I'm 99% self taught and I've gotten to a point where I'm technically pretty proficient but I feel like my lack of theory knowledge or ability to read is something I should try and improve, especially as I've been learning a lot of jazzy stuff lately. I know chords and some of the major/minor type stuff that you just pick up through playing. Anyone got any advice or tips to someone in my position? where would be a good starting point? Thanks!

Synth/filter pedal w/ expression pedal input? IE: Moogerfooger MuRF
AinsleyWalker replied to AinsleyWalker's topic in Effects
I'd put the LPF first on your list & then go for a MuRF. The MuRF can open up a load of ideas & routing though.
Thanks! Do you know of any other LPFs with exp input? Had a browse and not seeing too many. I'm assuming a Crybaby or similar Wah wouldn't have the same effect? -
Synth/filter pedal w/ expression pedal input? IE: Moogerfooger MuRF
AinsleyWalker replied to AinsleyWalker's topic in Effects
The MuRF pedals are not synth pedals. They're multi filter pedals. Have a look at the review I did a few years back. If you're wanting synth, I'd suggest going down the route of either a pedal that says synth on it (or maybe the pigtronix mothership), or look at getting a few pedals to make a synth filter section (like octaver, dirt, LPF like the moog mf101 & so on).
Yeah I was aware of that actually, and I've seen your video already while scouring for demos ! The modular route is actually what I'm doing now and I'm getting some really cool synth tones with octave, various dirts, EQ, chorus and tremolo in sections, I'm just looking for something now that will allow me to create oscillation/'wubs'. Do you recommend a LPF for that perhaps? -
Synth/filter pedal w/ expression pedal input? IE: Moogerfooger MuRF
AinsleyWalker replied to AinsleyWalker's topic in Effects
So I've done some more research, the SYB5 isn't quite what I'm after.. I'm after something a bit less in your face which can create a rounder type thing I'm after, IE: the track below. The 'wubs' created in the bassline are done with an expression pedal. He has a Moogerfooger Bass MuRF but he also had a Pod HD500X so I'm not sure which is being controlled. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ueI9c_egcZQ -
My friends needed a bass player to jam with. I already played guitar a bit so just hopped on and picked up some basics. Over the years I've practised both fairly equally but I'm definitely a bass player at heart.
You could look at the Boss SYB5 which does this. As it happens I have one to flog
Ah yes I'd forgotten about that one. I'm not looking to buy immediately but when the time comes I'll give you a shout and see if it's still for sale ! Cheers -
I've actually played with Taz from Submotion for a hot minute, he stood in on a gig I was doing when our regular guy couldn't make it. Monster jazz player; at one point we just let him and the upright player go for it for about 20 minutes and I stopped playing to sit in the audience and listen. Real nice dude and I didn't realise who he was until we were tearing down and he mentioned his day job. Keys forums are a bit sparse on the ground, you tend to get either the forums like gearslutz where they're coming from a hardware perspective or the Keyboard Player Magazine forums where it's mostly heavy theory guys shitting on modern keys. I drift around the KPM forums but it's hard work sometimes. I posted a thread about advice for second-wave Ska keys/organ because I double for a band doing Specials and such, but ended up on the receiving end of a rant about whether it could be legitimately called 'Ska' from some guy heavy into the roots scene. There's some useful stuff on there but a lot of chaff...
Ah that's awesome! Really looking forward to their new album. Ok cool, I'll check that out and hopefully might have some luck! Cheers for the info!
You posted the quotes below and then put up videos to show how to do a complete set up. I think they suggest a set up should be done each time you change the strings?? Even with the same gauges and same make and model of string you will likely need to do a setup. If they are a different make of string and still the same gauge then you are extremely likely to need to do a full setup. I rarely change strings but if I do I would do a setup.
He was posting the videos in response to what I said, which was that I didn't know how to set my bass up on my own. And his comments about setting up each time was just what he does, I've never done that for example.
What?? I need all those tools just to change a set of strings?
No those are to set-up the bass, to change strings all you'll need is string cutters, and an optional would be a winder for the tuning pegs to save time.
The principles are the same for any common fretted bass guitar - by which I mean to exclude 13-stringers and the like, etc. but even there the principles would be the same. If Carl Pedigo's video doesn't appeal, there are many more on Youtube.
Yeah, I've checked a few, but they seemed overly complicated needing tons of tools and such... But thanks I will check these out tonight

Thanks for the links! I have a stingray, I know what needs to be done in theory, just never applied it through fear of messing the thing up haha.. Will these videos apply to a ray? (Can't check videos at the moment!)
I rarely change strings but if I do I would do a setup. I'd also redo or check the setup every now and then anyway without new strings. How would you know it didn't need doing if you hadn't checked it?
I guess through my lack of knowledge of how to actually do a set-up on my own I've never thought it was necessary to do that often!
-
You can buy an electronic micrometer for less than a fiver. Even with the same gauges and same make and model of string you will likely need to do a setup. New strings even of same model and gauge are different, they are new. If they are a different make of string and still the same gauge then you are extremely likely to need to do a full setup.
Wait, does this mean you do a full set-up every time you change your strings?!
-
I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure those different gauges shouldn't impact on your intonation. They're all round about what a standard 4 string pack would be.

Advice in getting a refund - HELP!
AinsleyWalker replied to AinsleyWalker's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Ah if the pedal is used I see no reason why the seller should not offer you an exchange as they wont lose anything may be worth having a look what they have in stock and sending them a message? Good luck whatever happens
I can't as their website is under construction and doesn't have their stock listed but thanks!
