1. I'm seeing more and more that I'm in the minority here. Music and playing is in my blood and if I didn't do music in at least one form it'd be like not eating. Other people and money really aren't a factor.
2. As to the gigging question. I think I've been a composer first and a player second pretty much always. For me the instrument was a way to get the ideas in my head out. I don't NEED gigging for that, I just need a way to record it. Whether anyone else hears me play is completely not a factor in whether I'll play bass/guitar/doublebass/whatever in the future. I'll play because I can't imagine not doing.
3.
When I'm gigging at a club and see the utter disinterest in live rock music from the under 30 crowd,I wonder where the gigging drive is for all the bass players under 30.
They're likely doing their own stuff at the venues that allow them. I remember when I was in my 20s and I hated cover bands that played music I saw as "old people music". The cycle continues.
4. I hammer the crap out of Spotify, I search and search and find all sorts.
5. 58 precision.... The bass I've always wanted.... MUST NOT BLOW 10 GRAND ON A BASS!
6. Well, I guess I'm in a different situation as it's an electronic band, even the drummer uses pads. But for me... Bass > Hartke Bass Attack > PA. Done. Get it right out front and as long as I can hear the beat then I can play.
7. TBH if someone told me I had to play Mustang Sally in front of a bar full of drunk people.... No way would I do that for free. I have loads of respect for the people who go out and do bar work. I'm not one of them, I play the gigs I want to play. And that means financial recompense is little to none.
8. Absolutely. If I were in that situation I'd drop out of that rather than ask for financial recompense because I can get more money elsewhere. I totally get why people charge, but also why people don't. Just because I tend not to charge doesn't mean other people who are using this as a business shouldn't. #NotAllBassPlayers
9.
I'm not sure I'll ever understand the whole playing for free thing.
Ok, well I'll explain if from my own perspective... I run my own business... I make quite a bit from it... The kind of money I'd get from a gig would be buttons so I don't care about it, I play because I like playing. I get to choose when I play, I don't play wedding or bar gigs so no contracts and therefore no financial protection required. To me it's like golf. Some people play golf for fun, I play bass. That said if I was asked to sign a performance contract that included penaltied then hells sh*t I wouldn't do that for free.
10. They look cheap... That's what gets me and this is from a guy currently lusting after a stealth black HH5 stingray, so I'm far from anti-music man.
11. Cos there's a massive shortage of people making P and P/J basses out there? Er no... Meh.
12. Not seen another thread about this so I thought I'd start one. Managed to watch the first half last night (busy day) and it's really good so far. Anybody else got this yet?
13. Hello, My name's Keith. Originally I lived in the north but made my way down to sunny Cambridgeshire, I've been playing for about 23 years but still somehow manage to be sh*te. I've had a few albums out of my own (mainly electronic stuff) and occasionally play out with a band.
14. Ok, I'm going and I might even have a pass to buy a new bass. WOOP!
15. Ok, just listened to a demo of a Billy Sheehan Attitude... sounds like a monster.
16. I'm tempted for that reason alone if I'm honest. I've never been to one of these.
17. Hence the "I can't make my damn mind up" thing.
18.
Stingray. /thread
I've been wondering about that too. Specifically the 5string HH version.
19. I'm not sure. I mean the start of ace of spades is a great example, and I know that's a ricky but it's not quite. I guess a simpler question is what's the roughest sounding P these days? Fender or no. And is that rougher than a thunderbird? I suppose I'm just really close to getting a thunderbird but would rather not go Gibson and I don't like the shape much. That would have been easier if I'd just said that wouldn't it.
20. In the meantime this is out in a week and a bit http://www.amazon.co.uk/Jaco-Pastorius-DVD/dp/B015NLH4EA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1452268150&sr=8-1&keywords=jaco
21. Funnily enough that's around the time I'm thinking of buying my next bass.
22. And growling and deep. Not so fussed on zing.
23. Yeah, I use a bass attack too. Great pedal. I guess I was wondering if there was anything else that has the kind of grumpy sound you get from a P or a Thunderbird, but maybe turned up to 11. So not a soft P sound but a "I just punched you in the guts and made your balls cry blood" P sound.
