We use the X18 (also operated by yours truly) and only 2 of us on in-ears, My 2p:

    - I want to hear everything including the punters, IEMs will be too isolating - Ambient Mic will work fine.  Although I don't find the isolation half as bad as some people imagine it'll be.

    - What do we do if the iPad crashes or WiFi stops working? - I only use it with a wired connection to a laptop.  If you're dead set on wireless, then get an external router, the built in one isn't very good.

    - On having an app to control a personal monitor mix: I’ll never be able to do it, too complicated. (From the singer, who has the biggest objections to IEMs, but constantly wanting ‘more me’ and causing feedback with his mic antics) - You can setup his mix for him initially.  A few minor tweaks later, you'll probably find he stops asking at all from gig to gig.

This can also be done these days on a relatively modest budget.  I'd suggest hard-wired IEM at first, as decent Wireless IEM units are not cheap.  We use the Behringer P1's, but the newer, smaller P2 units are also good and cost about 30-odd quid each.  As far as earphone themselves, the KZ ZS10's seem very much in favour for those wanting to dip a toe into IEM's and can also be got for 30-odd quid.

can't see a problem - the concept of only being in one band and "cheating" on your band mates is sooo last century. But if the singer is doing this because he isn't playing enough gigs with you, why does the drummer think that he'll pick your band if made to choose?  I'd tell him (the drummer) to suck it up and stop thinking that he gets to tell somebody what they can or can't do when they aren't playing with your band.  It's pathetic.  And if I was the singer I wouldn't have asked, I'd have politely informed your lot what I was doing, it wouldn't be a debate.

The singer will need to sort out his priorities, but I've got mates who are in two or three signed, gigging/touring bands and they never have a conflict, they just allocate time to the bands as required. Mind you, they typically have a pecking order for any conflicts, some bands being regarded as more important than others, but will stick to the "first gig in the diary wins"

I've done it at a lower level too and it was pretty easy for day to day things like practices.  How I would have loved to have enough gigs for there to be a conflict!

@BrunoBass, get your Drummist to read this.  This pretty much covers it!

Well I'm not joining a band. Looked promising but the guitarist stopped the project.  At least I know what to get if things happen in future.

Ah that's a shame - for future reference most rehearsal spaces will have amps/cabs you can rent along with the room, usually pretty cheaply too.  Saves spending out on gear in the initial stages of bands..

Also as someone said earlier, rehearsal should be done at relatively low volume anyway.

My band practice in one of our living rooms. Practice amps, electronic drum kit, No vocal amplification.  Works just fine.

  4. Same here - my first Bass was a Black body / white guard / Maple neck Marlin Slammer Precision copy.  I know now it was rubbish, but it got me started!  One showed up locally on FB for £60 and I nearly bought it, just for sentimental value....

I think what doesn't help is the perception that playing an instrument isn't actually work; not like security, or building a stage. The perception that applause is validation in itself, and therefore full reward, for what a musician does...

Wrong, I know, but I suspect that's what a lot of people who aren't musicians think. Add to that the chance to cut costs, and you can see why it's the musicians which get the sharp end...

This is absolutely true.  I've lost count of the times I've heard 'Yeah, but that's not really work is it, because you enjoy it!' when I've told people in my Mon-Fri job that I'm working all weekend with my band as well.

You kept that one quiet....... If you ever decide to sell it, please, give me first option. That's the one I have always been after and would go beautifully with my red sparkle.

Sorry Matt, it went a few years ago!  Sold it to @SH73

Being a left hander options are always limited, but when this range was revamped I really took a shine to the CV 70s Jazz in black. I thought it had a beautifully sleek look and I've always wanted a bound/block necked Jazz in a solid colour. I had the chance when I bought my last decent bass from Guitar Emporium, put plumped for a '62 PB instead of the '75 JB and then the wonderful Fender Japan instruments ceased to exist.

I took a visit to a local nationwide guitar shop who had one in stock. It was superficially fine but it had a broken tuner on it which hadn't been noticed. A bit of a shame but they said they'd order me one in. Whilst I was there I tried out the 60s P and was quite surprised by how good it sounded and felt - easily as nice as the Japanese one I sold when I gave up live playing.

Collected the 2nd Jazz over the weekend, and when I got it home the bridge had been put on it so clumsily, so it looked like this:

Was not impressed so took it back to the store and swapped it for the 60s P which I'm absolutely loving. Really shocking QC from the factory on this one. Really disappointed. I think me and 70s Fenders aren't to be 😏

This can usually be easily remedied - loosen the neck screws a little and give the neck a pull sideways whichever direction is needed to correct it, and re-tighten.  Not uncommon for this to happen when stuff is transported around the world.  I had it on a Mex Geddy Lee Jazz.  Took me 30 seconds to sort it.

Thanks @Hellzero - I need to get inside my std USA Jazz to see differences, I'm not very up on the wiry bits😉

This thread does make me wonder about doing the series parallel mod on my std fretted one.

If I liked Jazz Basses, I'd do it to all of mine.  Great mod on Jazzes, not so much on Precisions.
