  1. Goodness me where do I start!?!?  I've had a few over the years....

Like the OP, Yamaha Attitude Basses - 1 'special' model, 2 LTD2's and 1 LTD3.

Fender Steve Harris signature - The Royal Blue sparkle one from 2009ish

Fender Geddy Lee - 1 sunburst MIM, 1 USA model

Fender MIJ Jazz Bass Specials - not the actual MIM duff signature model, but I had 3 of the original 80's MIJ Jazz Bass specials, 1 in metallic red, 1 pearl white and 1 black.

    Fender Flea Jazz Bass

Think that's all.  Yes I'm a fanboy.  Don't actually own any of them now.  They were all gigged at the time though, I think....

If you can get in the ballpark for £2.5k for example is it worth the £4k more to nail it  ? Obviously if funds aren't an issue why wouldn't you,  but do you think you are paying a premium for something real or mythical ?

Obviously demand is driving the prices up so there is a lot of love out there , further evidenced by not many coming up for sale  used - I guess they are worth what people are willing to pay, but are they just different rather than being better  ?

It's an interesting point - You could say they mean the same thing - i.e., The difference in the Wal sound is what makes it better..but yes, first and foremost, it's tonally different to anything else.

Think I'm gonna just wait for them to go out of fashion again and swap a Boss DS-1 for one (or two).

Bad gigs for me are where the promoter does nothing other than book the gig, where the headline band lose their heads in their own back-passages and won’t move their drums off stage but won’t allow the other band(s) to use it, multi band gigs in venues where there isn’t enough storage for all the gear, and where the promoters don’t get in a set backline to make changeovers/storage easier.

Also gigs where bands think of the gig more as a party and bring all their friends in the dressing room who then drink the whole rider and stay sat in the chairs that are there for the bands to relax in.  Said bands are often  the types that overrun on set times. Again the promoters should have a better handle on this and just stop both of these happening.

Lastly gigs where there is no parking - makes things just that little bit more frustrating.

I think of the replies so far this is the one that resonates mostly with me.  The poorly organised / managed multi band bill.

I'll add equipment issues as something that can make a gig 'bad' for me.

    Or an arsey in-house engineer.

I’m starting to gas after this, not for the roast maple neck or daphne blue limited edition finish though.  I like the idea of a pj with separate tone and volume controls for each pick up.

Has anyone got any idea whether Fender are likely to mass produce pj basses like this, with their usual colours or Is this likely to be as limited as they say?

I'd imagine this will be a limited version only.

If you've got a PJ - I would think that a certain Mr. @KiOgon could make you a double stacked knob loom for substantially less than the cost of this Bass!

    The Winery Dogs

    Audioslave

    Queen + Paul Rogers

    Them Crooked Vultures

I don’t dislike the above bands or collaborations, but I was never blown away by their output compared to how technically brilliant each band member was as an individual.

I can't agree about The Winery Dogs I'm afraid.

For me, the 2 albums they've done so far are utterly fantastic.

I guess that's they great thing about music and it's complete subjectivity!

Good idea for a thread mind you!

  6. The long and short of this is really that most pub/club audiences couldn't care less about where the backing music is coming from & there are plenty of people out there doing exactly what you describe.  The handy thing about it for pubs is that (if needed) they can fit into tiny spaces and charge substantially less than a full band.

Musicians / People in bands will always think that it's rubbish.

Sounds great, especially that neck pickup. £595 seems a steal. Fortunately, I don't like 38mm nut width necks; phew! 😅

I'm the same with 38mm nuts, and also the description of 'super slim 60's style neck' is off putting for me.

BUT  -   have you SEEN THIS BASS?....

We use the X18 (also operated by yours truly) and only 2 of us on in-ears, My 2p:

    - I want to hear everything including the punters, IEMs will be too isolating - Ambient Mic will work fine.  Although I don't find the isolation half as bad as some people imagine it'll be.

    - What do we do if the iPad crashes or WiFi stops working? - I only use it with a wired connection to a laptop.  If you're dead set on wireless, then get an external router, the built in one isn't very good.

    - On having an app to control a personal monitor mix: I’ll never be able to do it, too complicated. (From the singer, who has the biggest objections to IEMs, but constantly wanting ‘more me’ and causing feedback with his mic antics) - You can setup his mix for him initially.  A few minor tweaks later, you'll probably find he stops asking at all from gig to gig.

This can also be done these days on a relatively modest budget.  I'd suggest hard-wired IEM at first, as decent Wireless IEM units are not cheap.  We use the Behringer P1's, but the newer, smaller P2 units are also good and cost about 30-odd quid each.  As far as earphone themselves, the KZ ZS10's seem very much in favour for those wanting to dip a toe into IEM's and can also be got for 30-odd quid.
