you'll like la bellas then imo they have more tension, i really love the TIs were my go to for years but last 2 basses used la bellas great tone better than TI, less clack but i'd prefer a lower tension like TIs as i play really soft and like the action low as poss but tone is all for me - so la bellas win this round

Thanks for that, I can be a bit heavy handed but also like my action as low as possible, so finding the right strings and then getting the setup correct for me is always fun!  I've found Dunlop superbrights are the perfect roundwound for me, but the search for the right flatwounds goes on!

  2. Lovely, one bass missing from my arsenal is 50's style P and I'd love to have one.  Out of curiosity, do you know how the labella low tension flats compare with TI flats?  I've tried TI's on a few of my basses and wanted to enjoy them but they're sooooo low tension, just can't get on with them..

  3. The first UK Lockdown in 2020 was a turning point for me.  I had done my last gig in Feb / March 2020 just before the pubs closed, then I remember during August they were talking about re-opening the pubs and I realised after 5/6 months off, I hadn't missed gigging at all, which had to be telling me something, right?  So I made the decision to quit the bands I was in there and then.  As it turned out, live music wasn't allowed in the pubs anyway, so I hadn't left anyone in the lurch, so to speak.

  4. I've had all the ones I've wanted over the years - The Sparkly blue Steve Harris Fender from 2009-ish, 3 Yamaha Attitudes, Fender Geddy Lee, 80's MIJ Jazz Bass specials (not sig models I know, but bought because I was a huge Duff Fan).  The only one I've got now is the Bass Centre Guy Pratt Betsy Jazz..

  5. Happy Birthday for yesterday.  GAS is a fickle mistress, for me anyway! One minute I'm fine and the next I'm in physical pain for the shiny I've just seen online.  Current GAS for me would probably be a Strat and Tele for my home studio, or the new 40th Anniversary Squier Precision, in the blue colour.  I'm a sucker for a pretty P Bass..

I've not spent a massive amount of time on Basschat for the past 2 years either, and that helped with GAS also 😆

  6. I recently picked up one of the Bass Collection Guy Pratt Betsy models, got it s/h with a nice gig bag from Bass Direct for £450.  Pretty standard Jazz bass fayre but with EMGs like the actual Betsy. Excellent finish and I really can’t fault it.

‘Cheap’ basses (and guitars) really aren’t what they used to be!  I got one of the Harley Benton Les Paul copies from thomann in the summer for £238 delivered and it’s absolutely brilliant!

  7. Excellent transaction with Paul - 1 day delay with the courier - no fault from Paul's side.

Great detailed communication from Paul about the Bass which now finds itself in my grubby mitts!

As @MB1 says above - deal with confidence folks!

    Cheers, Lewi

Incidentally, I always thought these were MIM, yet your shot of the headstock says 'Made in USA' under the Fender logo?

What Lozz has here is an American Deluxe Precision, this was the top of the range series before becoming the American Elite during 2015 and now the American Ultra series..

A friend of mine has an Ibanez PNB14e, and rates it very highly. 24.75 inch scale, mahogany woods and built in electrics. Bit of a poor mans Taylor GS Mini bass at under £200.

I've got one of these too - love it.  Out of stock at Andertons at the minute though:

@AndyTravis it's a Stanford acoustic I bought used from a guy in Portugal - in fact a (snappily named) Stanford Robot. A damn good acoustic bass, the best I've ever played and sounds about as good as an acoustic bass can sound in my view.

That trusty snarling beast of a Geddy Lee Jazz was purchased from @LewisK1975

Awesome that you still have it Ed, of all the drives I've done to do Bass deals, coming to meet you in Salisbury was one of the nicest ones!

  11. As everyone has said, you won't go far wrong with either the Squier or the Sire.

The big difference between the 2 is one is active (sire) and one is passive (squier).

If you don't know the difference (apologies if you do) - 'Active' Basses have an onboard preamp which have bass/middle/treble controls like you'd find on an amplifier and are used for quick access tone changes (saves you going to the amp).  They require a battery/batteries for the preamp to work.  I think the Sire does have a switch to turn the preamp off though, so it can work like a passive bass.

For a first Bass, I'd be more inclined to keep it simple & go with the passive Squier.  That Bass just has a volume control for each pickup and an overall tone control.  Less controls to fiddle with an just get on with playing!

    Hope this helps!

  12. Agree on the modern singlecut Basses, never seen one I really liked.

One that always gets me is matching colour headstocks on Basses with Maple fingerboards.  Just looks wrong to me.

Same Bass with a rosewood/other dark fingerboard, usually very nice.

    YMMV!
