1.
I love these kinds of threads, as I'm entering my 32nd year of Rush being my favorite band, and by a wide margin. If not for Rush and Geddy it's doubtful that I would have ever touched a bass. And those guys still bring it.
I wonder how many people were inspired to get into Bass by Geddy. I know I certainly was.
2. Seriously though if that was a maple board I'd be looking for somewhere to sell my organs. What a beauty. Why must I have bills?
3. Brought some Rotosound Flats from Paul. He posted them very quickly and kept in touch letting me know when they would be here etc. An absolute pleasure to deal with!
4. Open to any trades? I always need more Charvels
5. Do you have any idea whether or not the Gotoh 201 will fit under the standard fender bridge cover?
6. Gave Paul a boss DS-1 on the recycling board for the price of postage, I offered to send him the pedal and let him pay the postage on arrival since I'm a noob here. He paid on arrival and was a pleasure to deal with!
7. Welcome Mate. Fellow west country man here!
8. Oh man if I didn't just spend so much on Christmas presents I'd have this in a second. If it's still here on the 25th of jan....
9. Brought a gold anodized pickguard for a P Bass from him, he dispatched very quickly despite it being christmas and it arrived well packaged in superb condition as described. Great guy and a pleasure to deal with!
10.
I don't know how they would sound in a bass amp, but for guitar amps JJ EL84's are the only modern production ones worth talking about. For preamp if you're planning on keeping the amp for a while I'd go NOS with something like a Mazda or Brimar. Don't cost that much, sound much better than anything current production and last for literally decades.
I don't see it going any where to be honest. Really like the little thing. I know Watford are closed for Christmas so I'll probably do a little more research and pick up some NOS valves as many here have recommended. They have a few available right now that are only £30 for a match pair (1970/71 Sovtek EL84M).
11. I think using really light strings should help. The problem with using regular strings is that they are so much bigger than guitar strings so it takes quite a bit more to get them moving. I hear about people manually starting the vibrations with some kind of hammer on technique. I know Michael Manring actually uses piccolo strings at something like 20 - 52.
12. I'm interested. Can you tell me what size holes it fits? I've had a little look online but can't find anything about it.
13.
My view is that the whole 'cryogenically treated valves' thing is more snake oil. Very little, if any audible difference between the two and certainly far less than choice of strings or pickups, for example.
This is pretty much what I thought the case would be.
So if you want longevity, I can recommend NoS, esp for power tubes. If you're interested in tonal differences between valves, you really need to try them for yourself and decide.
Brilliant advice, thanks. Looking on Watford now and it looks like they only have 1 NoS but it happens to be an EL84. Prices look good so I think I'll give those a try. Pretty cool buying valves made in the 70s for the Russian Military....
14. Hey Folks Just got my first all valve rig and am naturally already looking at changing the valves in my CTM-15 (I spoke with Ashdown and they told me the CTM-15 has generic Chinese valves) (Pre 1 x ECC83, Output 2 x EL84) and I'm browsing the options on Watford Valves and see that they offer a lot of the valves cryo treated for a couple of quid extra. I've read very mixed opinions about whether or not this makes any difference. What are your thoughts? And do you have any recommendations on what tubes to go for? I've been looking at the EHX balanced ecc83 and their el84. I've read some good reviews on their stuff and they are a very reasonable price.
15.
You're welcome... but I think I preferred 'lerking'.
I do rather enjoy the Urban Dictionary definition for 'lerking'. Although I'm not sure it's appropriate to post it here. The definition that is, not the act....
16.
Is lerking anything to do with twerking? Welcome to the forum.
Fixed! Thanks!
17. I have a boss DS-1 here that was given to me. The previous owner was a bit of an idiot(sorry) and had opened it up and broke some of the wires and tried to 'solder' them back together with what looks like candle wax and sellotape.... I do also have the original box. It does work ok but doesn't sound very good with bass. I can post it if you cover the cost, should be £5.20 royal mail second class. I'm in Wiltshire near chippenham so if you want to come and grab that's fine. Yes I have the handwriting of a 10 year old....
18. Hello everyone. Been lurking here and browsing your lovely marketplace for a while now and finally decided to sign up! Been playing bass for about 6 years now. Just purchased an all tube set up as an xmas present to my self (Ashdown CTM-15 drophead - absolute little rascal of an amp) and am hoping to learn more about tube amps!
