1.
+1 these SBMMs do seem to get bashed. Here's the bottom line, my current Ray34 sounds better and plays better than my old US 3 band 'Ray, which is why I bought it. YMMV. FWIW all my hardcases live in the loft and I always use a gigbag so that worked for me too. EDIT In case the resale argument is wheeled out again, with the exception of one bass/guitar, I have never bought any instrument with a view to what it will net me if I sell it, I buy them 'cos I like them for what they are, not what they will net me later.
Well put. As far as second hand value goes, it seems to me most of the SR4s are around half price or just a bit over. Same as the Ray34's (and most other basses) so i dont get the argument. Selling a SR4 you're likely to loose around £400 (based on selling it for £700). Selling a Ray34 you loose around £250. So to me it seems you lose less money, and have paid out less to start with than a SR4. Hows that not cost effective?
 2.
Boring or logical? £560 with no hard case worth at least £100,worse hardware, worse paint finish,None US pickup when an EBMM (sorry if its without a matching headstock!) for as little £640 on ebay in recent times to me has to be worth a mention.I know nothing of the models you mentioned but to me its still a bad finacial deal, Thats no dissing the bass in its own right just the facts.Do you dispute any of those facts?
Im not disputing you can pick up a second had SR4 for a bit more but it seems you have to take whats available or wait for possibly ages for the right one to come along. I could have got a SR4 for about £150 more than my Ray34 but i couldn't find a black one with matching head stock. And to buy brand new certainly wasn't going to be cost effective. Its really not worth arguing over it IMO so i wont. I do take your point but just dont agree with all the logic. Dont forget, i brought one and so did the OP (and plenty of others) so they must have something going for them. Just shows, we see things differently and no one is right. Whatever works for you is the right thing to do. Saying that, the one you linked to is rather nice and i do quite fancy it now.
 3. looks like this thread has gone the same way as every other SBMM thread. How boring. And ive yet to see a SR4 with matching headstock for anywhere near the cost of a second hand Ray34, or even new. Funny how a Lakland Duck Dunn or JO never gets slated as costing more than a Fender MIA, yet they come out of the same factory as the SBMM and cost around £300 more.
 4. We had a regular social club gig on sat and played a blinding (as in good) version of........Mustang Sally. Most of the room was up dancing and for the first time ever we all had smiles on our faces during it. Ok, bring it on.
 5. Last major music related purchase was a Fender HW-one. After ordering 4 more costly basses in the previous 5 weeks and having to send them all back i was very apprehensive. All worked out well though. EDIT: Just remembered i have a HW-one pick guard coming this week from WD Music. I ordered it 4 weeks ago, just before i got the HW-one. It had to come from the USA so that explains the delay. Customer service is great as i wanted to add a bag of 20 PG screws to the order so emailed them last night to say ill pay the extra for them when i hear back. I got an email back this morning saying they have sent me a bag at no extra cost along with the PG.
 6.
The guitarist says I'm playing the "wrong" notes as I'm playing the D an octave higher up.
Why would you? If the song has some sort of low bass notes holding the song down why would you play an octave higher, and thereby changing the feel of the song? Im just asking. Its sounds to me like you wanted to change the part even before you played a note as you could have used a drop D. IME if someone has written and recorded a song a certain way, i would at least try and keep close to it. At least at the audition. Im sure most bands will let you add a few bits etc but it has to be within the context of the song, and if its not your song you need to be careful. No offence meant, its just something that stood out in you post, and along with you "needing" to change the bass parts that someone else had written i feel you are definitely looking at the wrong bands. You sound liek you would be bored viged playing root notes, but sometimes this is all that called for. All IMO of course.
 7. Just seen this on Ishibashi's website.
 8.
so, is the neck slimmer than a SR4, lik the first poster suggests, or like a SR4, as the second one suggests? Or is there a large variation between individual necks? If I found a Stingray/SR4 with a slim neck I'd be disappointed... part of the "charm" is a certain feel, which means the neck must be maybe not exactly chunky, but certainly not slim.
I didnt suggest anything. I just said i couldn't get on with it. Im the same with a P neck as well. I've only ever played a SR4 for about 5mins in a shop so cant say how it differers. It did feel different to the Sub though. The Sub neck felt easier to play for some reason, although i didnt like the painted neck.
 9.
I suppose thread-lock would help prevent them from working loose, but I've never actually tried that myself.
I normally put a thin coat of clear nail varnish on the nut (;-) to stop it coming loose. so far it seems to be working. In the past ive used a small allen key inserted in the jack to stop it rotating whilst tightening it up with a spanner. £13 does seem a lot of money but i guess you're paying for the convenience of having a tool that does the job quickly.
 10. I loved mine when i had it. I think i did about 15+ gigs with it. I didnt have any problems with the paintwork though. I did change the pup on mine due to the G string sounding a bit weak but i felt although the new pup was nice (a Nordy MM4.2) it lost some of its character. I got mine after owning a Sub for a few months. I thought it would be a nice upgrade and i wasnt disappointed. I think i prefer 2 EQ to 3 but i certainly didnt find the tone lacking. In fact it sounded warmer than i expected, which was good as we play quite a bit of Motown and i use a pick. I sold mine because i just couldn't get on 100% with the neck. I much prefer jazz sized necks. I fancy trying a SB14 next but thats something for next year maybe. Heres a pic of mine (still with the stock pup)
 11. Good question. Ive been wondering the same just recently. Im tempted to get a 1 spot as ive heard good things about them but ill wait to see what others are suggested in this thread.
 12.
Wooohooo this baby's mine. So can't wait to get it and record the fretless album.
As soon as i saw this add i thought of PM'ing you about it. Good luck with it.
 13.
Still available!
And still tempted. Do you take Paypal? Its just a want at the moment, not a need so im just finding out how things are.
 14. I dont have any problems hearing myself but i do use a Gramma pad as a lot of my gigs are on hollow stages. As the poll said a couple of feet i didnt vote.
 15.
Ooops no sorry this has sold. Will amend the title accordingly!
Thank god for that, i thought i was going in to more debt lol.
 16. Is this still available?
 17.
Jesus!!!
Indeed. This is lovely.
 18.
Your pic of it is better, I miss that bass oddly.
Me too. I think my pic is still a bit too blue though.
 19. This is my old Teal Sub (in fact it was Waynes before i had it).
 20.
Good post.
+1 That post about sums it up for me. I would also add that i have been to a lot of corporate functions over the years and have never seen any originals bands at these events. Plenty of Tribute and covers bands though so i don't agree that tribute band are taking anything away from originals.
 21.
Yep, it's a beautiful bass alright. And still available. Maybe I should keep it?
Do you know what year this was made in and what pup it has in it? The serial number will tell you the age.
 22. Ive only ever owned one SB bass. I only had it for two weeks but i put a black PG on it and really liked the way it looked.
 23. The Venue seems to be doing ok and i believe its mostly tribute bands playing there. They seem to bill the gigs as if they were the originals, big posters etc.
 24.
Personally, if i was in a band which toured around the world playing huge stadiums, full of tens of thousands of people at a time, and to millions of people throughout the duration of a tour who wanted to hear me play music that me and my mates wrote, i'd change basses every song. In fact, i'd change batteries in the bass between each song, I'd have every pedal that had been manufactured, sitting around, ready, just in case, and of course a thousand brown M&M's in a brandy glass at every gig. All because i'd be in a world famous rock band playing stadiums, and therefore I'd be able to do that.
Too right, same here. I would also have way to many large cabs, because i don't have to carry them.
 25.
but all that noise and dissonance creates a sound and feel that communicates a certain sort of emotion in a way that sweet clean arpeggios could never do. Live and let live!
Thats what we are saying. But isnt pain a "certain emotion" ;-) Seriously, i liked the song but that guitarist was not giving me any pleasure at all.
