1.
I think another thing is that pretty much everything I've had has had a rolled fingerboard- this makes a difference. I think it is mainly the neck I'm reacting too to be honest, it was a funny shape (very clubby when compared to my flat P bass or smaller warwick) and not that nice. The body was perfect in terms of finish, it felt quite thick though, but thats the same on the jap instruments I've had.
I also found that with the 3 MIA's jazz basses ive had over the past couple of months. These were the first rolled fingerboards ive played and didnt really like them. I ended up with a HW-one as it feels much nicer, and also has a nicer tone (for me anyway). The neck feels more part of my hand if that makes sense. With the MIA's i felt a bit more detached from the neck and had to work just that bit harder. Still nice necks though.
2. Cheers guys. Ive put my Wizards in the bass, mainly to hear how they sound compared to the stock pups. Although ive only done one gig so far with them in this bass, i's pretty happy with them and will probably stick with them for a while. They have more kick than the stocks, probably a bit darker with less sparkle so not exactly what i was looking for when i started this thread, but enough of an improvement to keep me happy for a while........at lest for this week ;-)
3.
Are they available for other bands please
What, the drummers lol. When i say small rig im talking about a 2x12 cab so not easy to transport without a car. Actually the other band i play very occasionally with now (LMII/1210R rig) use other bass players and they do tend to use my rig occasionally. While i dont mind as they do ask, i don't really like them using it too often as its me who spent over £1000 so i could do the gigs with them. why i should i be expected to pay out for someone else to have an easy life? No offence and i dont know if you were joking or not. Im always happy to help someone out but only as a one or two off, not as a regular thing. I have offered the rig to a couple of members here over the years to get them out of trouble although it never came to actually lending it out. Other than for band related things i have no need for a car. I walk to work, my kid goes to school across the road etc so to keep a car on the road just for weekends isnt really cost effective (i would also need a parking permit as im in central london). Spending £1000 on a second rig might seem like overkill, especially as i used to use my Ashdown MAG with them, but over the past 5 years ive done around 50 gigs with them, all good payers. plus, its a back up rig if my main one goes down.
4. I live in london and dont drive. Although i dont do many gigs in London i do have to get a tube or train (wont do buses unless i really have to) to my pick up points each weekend. I play with two bands so i got myself two small rigs. I leave each rig with each drummer and just take my bass with me. It works fine for me but i guess i've been lucky.
5. Last time i saw RW he also had Trevor Horn playing bass on some songs. I think it was Robbie's comeback gig a few months ago at the Electric Proms. Bloody dreadful version of Video killed the radio star at the end of the night. He also looked like he had Clarky on guitar lol. EDIT: Seems like it was a year ago so im a bit behind the times. Never really paid much attention to him since he split with Guy.
6. Actually the highlight of the night was how good my HW-one sounded with the BDI21. Not bad for a £25 box of cheap components.
7.
They sound like a right bunch of yahoo twats. Still I bet you got plenty from your BDI (beady eye)
Yeah, they were. Im really surprised there wasn't any trouble but they were all too drunk to do any thing by the end of the night. Nothing beady about my eyes, they were both sitting proud and wide open. The girls knew we were looking as they we doing it for us. God, i love being in a band ;-)
8. Did a 21st birthday bash on sat in Norfolk. We were dreading this originally the client had set a un realistic max budget for a 2am finish. We managed to get them to raise it but we still had cut our price by around £160. When we arrived at took one look at the house and estate we felt we should have stood our ground. It was a huge farm and a huge marquee. Around 150-180 people all in. Gig started very quiet but as soon as a couple of young ladies got up to flirt with us the evening kicked off properly. We played well, and i used my BDI21 on for the whole night, first time for that. My tone was one of the best ive ever had, and considering it was a marquee i was very happy. The host (who's birthday was also that night) managed to hack me off at the start of the evening as, without asking, he took our singers mic off its stand and tried to take it across the room to do a speech. He had turned down the PA to cut the music and was then banging the mic because he thought it wasn't working. All he could hear was the fold back at the other end of the room. But the audience was another matter. Way too many drunk ex public school knobs there spraying the dance floor with champagne and beer, turning our PA cabs around and generally being, well, knobs. And my drummer pointed out that they all looked and dressed like Jeremy Clarkson. At one point there were 4 of them around each mic and we had to turn off all but the lead singers. Normally we dont mind if the odd one or two want to get up and use the backing mics but these twats were fighting each other for the mics. They were in good spirit though, no real fighting as such and were very appreciative. Oh, the bar was free and ended up as a help yourself so some of them were just getting pints of larger to tip over themselves. The mind boggles But, and this is the good bit, for about 10mins there seemed to be a craze of girls pulling other girls tops down. Out of about 7-8 at least two were wearing bra's . what can i say. More mistakes were made in those 10mins than in all the other gigs we have played this year. Then later, due to the dance floor being soaked the same drunk girls were falling all over the place, and each other. Wet dresses all round. So not a bad gig, just a bit manic.
9. I really must try one of these at some point, although ill probably aim lower and go the SBMM route unless a good bargain appears on here. In the past i always thought i couldn't get on with wide necks but recently realised its not the neck, its the string spacing. I would point out that unless your talking about unplugged, you're comparing a active to a passive above, plus different style of pups. I found the B sting on my old Fender P5 to be just as good as my 55-01 and DJ5, although ive never felt much of a difference between 34" and 35". In fact out of those 3 i found the DJ5 to have the loosest sounding B, but then the P had more punch in general anyway. Also, the 55-01 was active which i found to to give it a bit more tightness. Certainly compared to the passive (EQ bypassed) tone.
10. Glad its finally hit the spot after waiting all this time for it. Ive never played one but do think if i ever go back to a SR it will be a 5 string. Ive always found i feel more comfortable on 5 strings, even if im not using the B string much. I like the narrow spacing you get on a lot of 5 string basses and find them easier to play than, say a P.
11. Back to the top, open to close offers.
12. Ive had Chromes strung through body on both my 2008 MIA P5 and DJ5 without any issues. IME there is no benefit to doing this and can damage the string, it just hasn't happened to me. Then again, ive never broke a string either.
13.
About 24hrs left Dave....but no bids yet. If it doesnt sell on Tbay, will PM you mate.
Cheers Neil. If there was some way you could post it i'd have it off you now.
14.
The law of diminishing returns at work again. You can't calibrate "better" you either think it's better in some way/s and are willing to pay the dosh, or you're not. And now the caveat, those Squiers are frickin awesome! I have no idea how they produce basses (and guitars) of such quality for the price. It's like when Squiers first came out all over again. Great news for the consumer.
I agree although i do think the MIA's are also worth the money if you can afford one. They have a nicer finish to them, maple fretboards on all models, better range of colours, come with a nice hard case and rolled fingerboards. So IME the are better if you dont take the cost in to consideration, but its down to the individual to decide if those extras are worth it or not.
15. Well im sold lol. Im after Neil's red one for sale on here but i expect it will sell before i can get to him. If so ill get a new one. I would love to put a Fralin in it but at £140 new i don't think i could justify it.
16.
I've got them in my Overwater paired up with a J-retro and they give a big fat full sound, slightly retro, but they can snarl and snap as well. You can hear them on this little demo Here Setup: Ultra Jazz -> J -Retro (set 'flat') -> SM-1500 (set 'flat') -> D.I. into SD9 desk mixed in with SM-1500 through Schroeder 21012 through unknown high end room mike into SD9.
Just had a look at your vid. Thats a lovely tone you have there.
17. Thanks Rich. At the moment i have my Wizards in the HW and they sound pretty good, i might just keep those in for now but still want to try something more "rocky".

Im just planing on going passive bass - amp - cab. Your setup is so different to mine that i wouldn't be able to compare and not sure exactly how much the J retro, Schro etc has added to the tone. Ill have a listen though.
19.
I pick up a USA Jazz too, it was ok but not worth the extra money over the Squire. I am sooooo impressed with these Squires!
Exactly how i felt. The MIA's are lovely basses but not almost 4 time lovely than my CV Jazz. And as the CVJ has vintage frets i find its a lot nicer and easier to play. I doubt ill ever use the CVJ again (i now have a HW-one that i prefer) but i know ill definitely use the neck on something else.
20.
Just a heads up - my lady ordered me one for my birthday -ahhhh - but due to thomann long wait bought one locally. According to their email yesterday Thomann have gone and dispatched me one after the order was cancelled. If anyone would like to have ot for the going retail price I'm happy to pass it on and I'll cover the postage. It will naturally go up on the appropriate for sale section once it arrives. If its any consolation I do enjoy mine and am tempted to use it at my next band practice for a bit of fun
I'll take it if no one else has yet. I'll PM you now.
21. Cool, look forward to your views on it. I might order mine next week.
22. Cheers for the reply and pics. Its looks pretty good for a bass costing £260 ish. Think i might be tempted away from a CV P now. How do the blocks on the neck feel? Are they just stuck on?
23. Damn. Ive been amp GAS free for a few years now. Now ive seen that review i can feel the GAS rising quite fast.
24. Also open minded about other offers now. Maybe a Tonehammer. Not really interested in any FX though.
25. And how close can it get to a P?
