Squier Classic Vibe Range - Which to choose?!
I see your point, and unfortunately I don't think I'm going to manage to get both basses together under the same lights. But the difference was a lot more than I could imagine being caused by the lighting alone. Either way, it looks like you'd need to see the bass (and preferably in a range of lighting conditions) before buying if you are at all concerned about shades and hues. And, by the way, I agree about not needing to change much on the bass. I've switched the pup, but am happy with everything else on it.
Yeah, you could be right. mine is the only one ive seen in the flesh so i cant really say if mine is typical or not. Im not really a red bass guy but i do prefer dark/wine or even CAR to this. Still, i cant complain, its been my main gigging bass for over a year now, and its been good enough to allow me to sell of my other, more expensive basses. Im not saying i dont want something better but for now i cant see me actually getting or needing anything else. The only reason i changed one of the pots in my CVP was because i damaged one when i was putting a new pup in it. It still has the original wiring and jack, the CV Jazz has all its electrics as stock. -

Other than the pup i see no reason to change anything else inside. I know some people do i really dont feel its needed. I found the stock pots to be smoother than the CTS pots i brought, and i had 6 of them trying to get s smooth one, and ive now been gigging my CV's for over a year, almost every weekend and never had any problems. I did change the cap in the P but only because i wanted to hear what difference a standard Fender P rated one makes, not because i felt a more expensive one of the same capacitance would make any difference. I believe the Squier ones are different to the usual P caps. -

Thanks Gareth. You can blame GW for setting me off down the maple path. I think the bass looks a lot better with the maple neck. Now first thing in the morning give GAK a call. If you can get it by Friday i will give us all something sensible to talk about, otherwise we will be stuck with the usual silly Friday threads :-) -
Well, that depends, and not just on the light. I've got one that I would say is very red, and lovely too. But the other day I was in a shop that had one that was really quite a different hue, much more dark pink, and much less to my taste. So I suspect different batches have had significantly different paint put on them. So this is another one where you'll really need to see the bass in question before buying.
Mine can look dark or very light. I'd be interested to know how yours looks under the same shop lights. -
Hmm, if I get a P bass on the Fender rebate ill have 2 Ps, and 1 J. A CV Jazz would balance things out! Ah well, no rush.
As GW said, shut up and get on with it ;-) -
We all have out heads turned by the frantic playing of the Wootens, the Sheehans, the Manrings etc
Probably in the minority but quite the opposite, these players bore me to tears. Ok, maybe not the players themselves but their style of music. To me its like sitting in front of an open freezer naked, leaves me very cold and numb (yes, i have). Call me shallow but im quite taken with Take That's Rule the world at the moment. There, ive said it. I expect to be either banned or ridiculed by the end of the day :-)

First gig last night with my Auralex Gramma Pad
Would a Gramma Pad make any difference if your cab was on wheels/casters?
Yes, it would make it taller -

First gig last night with my Auralex Gramma Pad
dave_bass5 replied to tonyf's topic in Accessories and Misc
Brought an Auralex Gramma pad a few weeks ago and did my first gig last night. Done the same venue a few times before and it made a noticeable difference. Recently migrated from a EBS to a TC Classic450/RS210/RS212 rig and I've gotta admit, the jury was still out after struggling to dial in a sound over the past few gigs. Last night was so different. Plugged in, a few minor tweaks and bang, lo and behold a tighter, more focused and punchy sound. Loads of bottom end still there but it was so much more defined and controlled. I'm a happy camper. If you'd had told me how much a difference the Gramma Pad could make, I'd not have believed you. Always been weary of "snake oil" but this is the real deal IMHO. I'd struggle to think of anything sub-£50 which has made such a huge improvement to my sound. T
A lot of us went through this a couple of years ago when someone posted a very cheap deal and we all rushed to get them. Ive not gigged without mine since. Like you i had played the same venues a few times without the pad so i could hear the difference straight away. Ive had the strips but using the full pad made a much bigger difference, could also be down to the foam on the underside of the platform helping keep things in check. -
No experience with those pups but i have seen one or two Squier CV pups for sale fairly recently, at least these are a known quantity. If you dont get many replies about the Wilkinson's there are quite a few posts about the Squier CV stuff.

Squier Classic Vibe Range - Which to choose?!
dave_bass5 replied to Musicman20's topic in Bass Guitars
The bridge alone makes it worth the premium over the VM, the brass item is so much better than those dodgy bent bits of tin.
Nice bridges indeed but i couldn't get on (or rather didn't want to) with the 20mm string spacing and have replaced both mine. -
I think this is commonly referred to as a foam mute. I believe it was standard on the early Fender basses. A lot of players still use them and it gives the bass a more upright, thumpy tone (again, i believe). James Jamerson used them, as does (or did) Bob Babbit and this is part of the Motown sound.
My only worry is the Fiesta Red looks VERY pink...is it?! I will NOT be modding, apart from some strings later down the line. Which has the 'best' pickup (s)? (As stock).
Well, as you know i hate the fiesta red, and yes, it is very pink although the room lighting can make it a bit darker. Just dont take it out in daylight as thats when it looks its worst. I think both have usable pickups. I could live with the stock ones but on a bass this cheap i felt i had nothing to lose by modding them, and it did seem to elevate them higher than as stock. I now use a Fender Original (62RI) pickup and to my ears this sounds exactly like a P should, I actually now prefer this pup over the Wziard Thumper.
Just ordered a Matt Freeman P in all of it's black loveliness.
Best of the P range IMO but i know Gareth doesn't like Black basses. -
green/maple fretboard needs to be ordered
Cool. that would look pretty close to the"real" SR Classic then, only with a slimmer neck. Perfect :-)
-
Just had a reply back from the vendors, yes, they do these with maple necks....
In green or 3TSB? The 3TSB comes with a maple neck, ive not seen the green with one yet.

This is mint green according to SBMM. Lovely bass, and with a Jazz neck. One day ill own the 3TSB/maple version.
As much as I am indeed wary to order again, as I have S&T checking things out, I think this time it will be fine.
As long as its not the same guy who checked your last bass before sending it out ;-) -

If this is supposed to be a sig model why on earth did they leave the tone knob wired in? The only thing that could possible distinguish this from a bog standard black/maple P and they don't bother to do it right. Still a nice bass though. -
I'm going to see Big Country live in February,
Ah, so thats who he is. I thought i had heard his name before. So does this come with a chorus pedal ;-) Just had a look at the video and wow, now i can see where some of my bass lines came from back in the 80's. Its nice to see him getting recognition but i dont see a real reason to bring this out. Its like a Squier Matt Freeman only slightly different and more expensive. Still waiting for a Bruce Foxton bass to come out. Now that was a unique looking P bass ;-) -
Another Wizard user here. 74's in my CV Jazz and a Thumper in and out of my CV P. I say in and out because ive had a problem fitting it in. It seems to be slightly too big to fit both PG's ive had on the bass. I did manage to file one PG down but at the moment i have a black PG and i really couldn't be bothered filing this down so im using a Fender 62RI (Original) pup in it at the moment, which seems tofit in fine. Both sound pretty close anyway but i will use the Thumper again one day.

Probably two of the cheapest basses in the thread but i love 'em. My two Squier's, now upgraded and im very pleased with how they turned out. The Jazz is pretty much stock other than Wizard 74's and a Gotoh 201 bridge, the P only has the body remaining from the original CV, it now has a Lakland JO neck, Fender 62 Original (RI) pup, Gotoh 201 bridge and new pots and wiring. Not on the couch but leaning against it, i hope that counts.
