1. Oh dont get me wrong, i know chords and intervals etc, its just that i haven't really worked the chords out to any of the songs as i try and learn by ear by just playing the tracks over and over. By the end i can pretty much improvise over the song anyway. This is all in a controlled band setting though. Ive never stood in for anyone at short notice other than depping with another similar band but they did more or less the same set of songs. In fact i used to know most of the songs better than they did. I enjoy spending time learning songs through my PC so tend to brainwash myself with the original tracks on my ipod during the day at work. I find if I know how the song should sound then playing along is pretty easy and stops me getting lost if i do forget how it goes. Ive had a few incidents where ive relied on charts, noyl to have those charts get moved during the gig and ive been left to wing it, badly. One thing i did cheat on (maybe thats not the right phrase) was to buy a 5 string so i could play their versions without having to re work the lines from the original keys. That help a lot and got me in to 5 string basses.
2.
[sup]Two midgets on stage can get nasty[/sup] [sup][/sup]
LOL, i was going to use the Stone 'enge scene from Spinal Tap but this is funnier.
3.
The track is easy so make out a chord chart and just ask the drummer what pattern he is going to play and follow his kick all the way through.
Its funny but i dont think i know the chords to any of the 100+ songs we cover. Its just struck me that if someone was to ask what the chord was i could only tell them the bass note. I tend to sit down and play through the tracks by ear or with bass tabs. Ive never actually written any of them down as i dont want to ever rely on charts at gigs. Does that make me a bit odd lol.
4. To be honest i cant even think of any other shops in London other than the Gallery, certainly none that stock MB and GB etc.
5.
If you have a look on eBay you'll see that some of the J control plates for sale have a dimensional drawing in the blurb. You could find a few, take a few mesurments and make a card template of the one thats closest to yours, then, if it's the same you could buy it. A friend of mine also had the same complaint as you on his CV J and he replaced it with a black one off eBay, usually they are available in chrome, black & gold colour so you will probably be ok on eBay, hope this is some help.
Any chance of getting the ebay shop link from your mate? I was looking at mine last night and it too is getting a bit tarnished, and i quite fancy getting a black one. No problem if you cant, ill go looking for one at the weekend.
6. Cheers Clarky, made a change from watching the news over breakfast.
7.
Where did this spring from. It's a 3 year old thread! Complex? Isn't it just standard passing notes with feel. Maybe I'm missing something. If I am I'm playing it wrong..
Not everyone is up to the same standard of playing.
8. I dont know much about these things but i dont think something is working right. Ive been using MB heads (currently a F1) for about 6 years, always in to a 4 ohm cab (Schroeders) and never had any issue, done well over 500 gigs with this set up. I have had my SA450 cut out on me a few times in one evening when i was using a rehearsal studios cab. Every time i hit a loud note or slapped (i know, i really shouldn't) the head would shut down. It turns out the cab was faulty and the head was just protecting itself. Ive never had any other issues with my heads in to 4ohms cabs. I know this doesn't help much, Ijust thought I would share my MB experiences with 4 ohms cabs.
9. Bugger, im getting headphone GAS now. Just been looking in to the 25's, they look very, very nice. I noticed there is the more costly, and better looking HD 25-1 II and the cheaper 25-SP II. Any comments on the differences?
10. I thought the whole idea of paying £2000+ on a bass (for example) was because it plays so well. If thats the case i dont see how a bass can be to much for someone's abilities. To me it means its easier to play by anyone, no matter how good they are and so is ideal even for a learner.
11. Yeah, i keep saying im going to replace the cable on mine but never get around to it. To my ears they sound quite similar to my cheap Sennheiser PX100's so i tend to use those more.
12.
My Squier Jazz is also the best bass in the world! How did that happen?
Ive given up mid range basses as my Squier's do the job for me so not sure what a high end bass would offer other than looks and maybe a different feel. If i had the "spare" cash to by something a lot more expensive I probably would but even with unlimited money ive seen the prefect bass for under £2000 so i wouldn't even consider a higher end boutique bass.
13. Ive got some Grado SR60's but dont really like them. First off i normally plug in to the PC and thats in the living room so being open backed they are too noisy. Sound wise they are great but i hate, with a passion, the cable that they come with. This alone has put me off using them. I now use Sennheiser HD215 but im always on the lookout for something a bit fuller sounding, i might have a look at the AKG's mentioned.
14.
No more than the original (see below) :
and its been dropped on the floor lol. Good luck with the sale. A bit OT but if anyone has the War of the Worlds stage show DVD there is some great rehearsal footage of Herbie with his Jazz.
15.
Mind you, I don't really like playing the song live, as I think it falls in the category of 'Mustang Sally', 'Johnny B Goode' etc, that has been done to death IMO.
You mean the crowd pleaser's
16. Up to that point the only Jazz I had played was my HW-1. That had a different tone and i guess i was expecting the DJ5 to have it. The DJ5 sounded great but it just wasn't what i was looking for at the time. I Also think maybe i didn't like the Nordstrands so it might just be coincidence. By the time i had placed the for sale ad i had come to like it but also moved on to a different tone so it made sense to sell it while i could get a good price for it. The original buyer was also in N.I. I cant remeber who it was now but i know he sold it on.
17. Me and my guitarist play the intro, it sounds better with both us playing it and its a chance to see who mucks it up.
18. Just go in to the bass guitar forum and type Squier in to the search box. Loads of posts about them. For what it's worth I love my CV's. Having owned higher end basses in the past I now realise the cheap basses play every bit as well as those costing two or three times the cost. They aren't perfect, and the colour options are way too limited but for the price I think they rival the American standards. One thing to note is that they have vintage style frets. These are a bit lower than the usual medium jumbo frets and I love them. You won't find these on most of the cheaper end Fenders so it's something else to consider over the MIM.
19.
Apologies for going slightly off topic but I've played this bass Dave and it's a cracker. Well set up and very lightweight. A real gem. What didn't you like about it? Frank.
From the moment I first pugged it in (as a jazz bass) i never really got on with the deep tone. I felt compared to my HW-1 Jazz bas sit lacked clarity and punch. Even changing the pups to Nordstrands didnt really help. In all other respects i loved the bass and given the choice again, i would definitly keep it. I belive its been converted to active and back again since i sold it. I wonder who has it now.
20. This isnt the place to ask questions, this is the review section.
21. I did this with my Lakland DJ5. Actually i had the gallery do it. It worked pretty well IMO. I never really got on with the bass so sold it but i do now regret it. I think its still doing the rounds on here. I believe the Sadowsky PJ's allow you to change the pup between a P and a J, and come with 2 pick guards, each cut differently to allow either pup to be used. my one used a normal Jazz pick guard that the Gallery cut to fit the front pup but i think the Sadowsky one is a bit longer, allowing the front pup to sit where it should be on a P (this is from memory, and never having owned one)
22. This sound likek my Streamliner thread. I just had to keep withdrawing it. Some gigs it worked really well, others it didnt. End of the day i had something i liked a bit better so one had to go. I do sometimes think the wrong one went. The Streamliner is a fantastic head and i really miss how much authority each note gets with this head. Whoever buys this is in for a treat.
23. Have a "I'm sick of seeing nice basses that i cant afford" bump. If only bloody Christmas wasn't approaching :-(
24. We play this about twice a year, around Dec time funnily enough ;-). We normally just add it in to the middle of Stand by me, kills two birds with one stone.
