I actually did this just after posting and have now had dialogue with him. Still not sure i like the idea of having to use a social media platform and have emails ignored, but maybe thats just the way he works.

Ok, so another inquiry to Lugs yesterday using a direct email has got me no where (although it’s not been 24 hours just yet). Maybe im too impatient lol. So another brand ive just noticed is Cosmicears. I quite fancy the CE3P, which is at the top end of my budget. Anyone using these?
-
We had one rehearsal where me and the singer we facing the rest of the band. They only use small amps but it was a small, long room. I was a shocked by the sound pressure level when I took my IEM’s out. Now I use them all the time. I have tried the AirPod pro and was surprised at how much they attenuated the sound, but then I couldn’t hear myself. It’s funny but when I was playing bass I never had this issue. I guess I was always standing to the side of the drums and guitars and so never had the full force aimed at me. This is why I now stand at the back in my own space.

Can I ask what you all moved on to? Ive given up trying to find the perfect foam/silicon etc ear tips so I’m committed to getting customs now. I’ve set my budget to £500 max (inc getting the impressions done).

Having backline on a small stage is the reason I went for IEM’s over a monitor in the first place. Im amazed at how many times my Apple Watch alerts me that the ambient sound level is above 90db. At rehearsals it’s gone above 100db a few times. Luckily I stand at the back, behind the backline most of the time, but it’s quite noticeable when one ear starts to come loose. Always the one closest to the bloody drummer lol.

Yes, I think that’s my situation as well. They are very new to the 21st century way of doing things. Had things done for them in the old line up and didnt really get the experience of doing things themselves. Even down to taking a PA speaker off a stand and collapsing it took two of them to work it out at the first gig we did with them 😂

It is nice being able to standardise the cables now. Other than the instrument cables it’s all XLR, even the monitors. Made life a lot easier as I don’t have to tell them what cables to use.
-
I was going to put names on the mixer, but half the band (at least) are as blind as bats. Once some of the cables are going in it’s hard for them to read something that’s on the floor lol. At one point I had two of them on all 4’s trying to figure out where those cables go 😂 Only done a handful of gigs with it so far but as time goes on it will be more familiar to them.

To be fair my lot are helpful, it’s just that they don’t remember to do things like run cables or set their own mic stands up etc. Not sure it’s laziness as such, or forgetfulness. A bit of both I imagine. The drummer does most of the running around for them. He is clued up on all this so runs around with cables etc, but I wish he wouldn’t. I only use the mixer with the one band so in theory it’s easy as everyone always uses the same inputs. I still get ‘which am I in’ though, which normally gets a ‘same as always’ reply. I made these cards up for everyone and keep a few by the mixer at gigs. The colours match the channel colours we use in Mixing station so it helps them get to know where to plug in. In the process of doing some proper vinyl rings to go on the mixer to match the diagram.

That’s a good write up and I can relate to all that, as I’ve just gone through pretty much the same ‘life changing’ experience. Getting the XR18 has transformed the band. Being able to just get on and play, gives me the feeling I’m at home playing along to recordings etc. I can totally zone out that I’m on stage if I want to. I’ve got each guitarist and BV panned so it all sounds well places in my ears. So far we still have two monitors on stage, but that’s fine as it means the mics get a bit of ambient stage noise and makes the IEM’s a bit more open sounding. I’m the only one with a stereo IEM feed, but if the others want the same then I’ll make them start sharing, but for now we all have our own mixes and all are now using Mixing Station. Saying all that, I’m in one of those bands where some members expect it all done for them. I have enough to do at gigs so I refuse to plug everything in. It’s all colour coded and easy enough to do, but a few members just strap on their instrument, noodle until we are all ready and won’t take them off to do anything else. Many time we have been at rehearsals and he mentions he doesn’t have a mic set up. WTF!!! Sorry, that’s for another thread 😂

When i had mine (briefly) i got an upgraded cable that not only felt better, but was marked quite distinctly which was which. Then again, i see no reason to take the cable off on a regular basis.

It’s good to hear both sides when having to shop ‘blind’. Obviously this could be a one off, or just preference (I’ll go with the first though), but it does add to my list of negatives for using Lugs, although there are still more positives. I’m sure if it was a fault he would put it right, but at what cost and time to the customer. I’m a firm believer of the best customer service is the one you never need in the first place. Im having one more go at using standard tips this week, I’ve order a pair of Azla SednaEarfit XELASTEC ear tips. These are supposed to be quite sticky so I’m hoping for the best.
-
That’s worrying. Not so much that I think they will be rubbish, but it sounds like maybe they weren’t checked properly before being sent out (maybe). Did you get in touch about this?
-
To be fair it does say the cables are marked L/R in the small sheet that comes with them. In my case I just couldn’t see them.
-
Yeah, i think if i do decide to go with him I’ll contact him directly rather than via his website.

The ability to change filter characteristics is a good one. I’ve got most of my generic Zen Core synth brass programmed with the Moog filter. As much as I love the Roland sound the Moog seems to have a bit more body to it. A bit darker I guess.
-
Wow, XV-5080 as well. Its amazing what Zen core does these days. It looks like you have the same expansions built in that the Fantom does, plus the 3 on the right. I almost got the smaller version last year, but was put off by the shorter keybed for live playing. One of the reasons i like using the synth expansions in the Fantom is for the more traditional user interface. It just seems more intuitive. I tihnk Rolnad do a good job with the ergonomics on these things.
-
OH MY……that is gorgeous. I had the original JP8 in the early 90’s, and loved it, but i didnt find much use for it in a covers band. These days i use a Fantom 06 with the JP8/JX8P/Juno106 expansions and find i use the JP8 most of the time. I can only imagine how powerful this sounds.
-
I didn’t keep mine for long, but IIR the flat side was facing my head. You could just plug them in and see if you notice the L/R reversed compare to how it normally Sounds.
-
If you notice, the cord coming out of the earpiece points away from the ear. That’s how I tend to remember these things
-
I just put them in my ears and if they felt right they were. That cable really caught me out. I spent ages trying to find the marking’s on it. I ended up just plugging them in and panned left and right and swapped until it all sounded correct.

As i mentioned in private, ive not heard back from Lugs at all, and ive asked 3 times over the past year or so, but i did see a message on his FB page saying he has stopped doing re shells at the moment so he can concentrate on producing his own IEM’s. This sort of puts me off placing an order and having no real comm’s. The custom tips are attractive, due to the price, and i like the idea that i can still use my MX Pro 3, but yeah, the real pleasure would be full custom. It’s just i need to sort things out pretty quickly, but dont have a pro budget.
-
Ok, change of plan. Anyone got any opinion on the Lugs S2? They are at the top end of my budget (well, over twice really) but could afford them if they are recommend. Im still thinking, ill probably get Mee Audio to make me custom tips for £150 if the costs start to mount up.
-
Nah, Spinfits still not stable in my right ear. I think this was asked a while ago, but anyone got any views on the ACS Evoke 2 Classic? Im now leaning towards getting these, as the price is right and it includes thew ear scan.
