1.
One of my builds has an MM5TW in it with an EMG BQC Control EQ (you use the master vol that comes with the PU) and it sounds epic with nickel D'Addarios on it. By far my fav recording bass. Would highly recommend.
Is that single pickup mate? Was it easy to fit?
 2.
Well, if yer askin'...
3.
Had a quick look through the thread - can't see any post that remotely suggests "young people are crap". But, hey-ho, moving on... With regards earphones: They are convenient, they take up very little space in your pocket... but that's about all they have going for them. I use a pair of Sennheisers that are considered to be pretty good - IMV they're ok, but I wouldn't call listening to music through them a "particularly enjoyable experience".
But that's just you innit. I find it very enjoyable. But not if I want a dance, I crank up the hifi for that. Do you enjoy a dance?
 4.
There's rather too much 'young people are crap' on Basschat. Disappointing.
Yep.
 5.
Ouch! My daughter has an iphone and earphones - it sounds atrocious! I think she's fairly representative of the way "young people" listen to music these days. They use whatever is supplied and don't realise the difference a decent pair of phones can make. I've tried educating her, but she shrugs in a kind of "whatever" kind of way!
I have the latest iPhone headphones and they are very good, if I can get them to stay in my ears, they are certainly not atrocious by any stretch of imagination. I use a good pair of ear buds normally. The pair I got with my work Samsung are crap, but they still chuck out some bass. I think too many people assume kids don't know what music should sound like.
 6.
I agree, an iPhone with a decent set of ear phones can sound great especially if encoded using the apple lossless encoder but unfortunately a great many younger people listen to a lot of their music through their phone's in built speaker which just doesn't do justice to the original recording especially as much of the lower end is lost. Similarly, technology has made the distrubution of music far more convenient (through streaming and MP3s) but arguably at the expense of the quality of the reproduction. So is not valid to surmise that these factors may lead to future generations not developing a musical ear for the quality of a recording in the way that perhaps previous generations did?
Oh OK I see what you mean. I doubt many kids do that, I've seen them do it on the bus, and I have seen a friend's kids do it with their iPad, but I doubt your suggestion is widespread and that that's how a great many kids listen to music through choice. Most kids I see are using headphones.
 7.
It's a crying shame that you've got great sounding ear buds and play such dreadful music through them
Yeah, Elgar is a f*** ton better than Delius.
 8.
On a slightly off-piste (but related note), what worries me more is that most younger people seem to listen to music on tinny iphones (or similar) where you can't hear the bass properly anyway and just sound generally awful. With that being the case, does it matter what you play or how you play it, as no-one's going to hear it reproduced properly anyway.
Have you got an iPhone? Have you heard what music sounds like on one with a half decent pair of earbuds? You sound like you don't know what you're talking about, that's a stupid statement with no grounding in reality. I DO have an iPhone with a half decent pair of earbuds and the varied music I listen to, from Delius to Rush, all sounds rich, warm, deep and very detailed.
 9.
I like that
One of my local hairdressers They have a theme going .. this got em a visit from some pissed off North Koreans from the Embassy
 10.
Did I say me? I obviously meant any mod other than me... Try Douglas's idea first (I've never tried doing that) and if you still have a problem, let me know and we'll try plan b. EDIT: You're sorting stuff out quicker than I can type replies...
It's in your profile. Manage attachments or summat. Can't understand why anyone would bother using it though, it's rather clunky. Much better to use photobucket or Facebook and paste the link into the image module of your post.
 11. Can't seem to find them in the UK, and I'm a bit green with this lark. Also, what active two or three band pre would work well with it? It will be going in as a single pickup in a sweet spot of my choice in a Stingray 5 Thanks for any help x
 12.
Depends on your viewpoint. They did a great design job with that bass and the standard electronics do the job extremely well. It most certainly ain't a turd!!
That may be. However, as much as I adore the woods, build and feel on my new '88 SR5, The pups and pre are going to be gone as some point. They don't do the job for me.
 13.
I can't tell. Are you saying it's the finest instrument in the universe incapable of being bettered? Or are you saying that you can't polish a turd?
14.
Hmm, I see nothing factual about this post. I cant see the difference in a lot of things, but that just highlights my inability to see the difference, NOT that there may/may not be a difference! If I chose to do something to one of my basses that I paid for with money that I earned Then that's for me to decide, and also it's my choice whether or not to keep the original parts. To get back on thread though, Jimmi Clarke of this parish, (and youtube) has extensively changed the "innards" on his Stingray, and has a lengthy youtube video explaining whats been done, and sound samples to illustrate the changes made. By the shear amount of aftermarket MM pups from lots of different manufacturers serves to illustrate that many people can see the benefit of "upgrading" the stingray bass. Fretmeister, Jimmi's video is well worth a watch, he's a great guy and a top player too, Ooops, I nearly forgot the IMHO bit, as it's only my opinion, and may not contain any facts
This one? Love the sound of both pickups on. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tS-tpgPFUpI
 15.
That looks a beaut Nige and wow, that neck wood.
I know mate! Stunning bit of maple that, amazing in the sunlight, and it's 3-D, so no camera can capture it
 16.
Lovely looking bass. Are the pups closer together than the later Stingray 5 HH?
It's a mod, mate. A previous owner had an extra pup fitted, done by Martin Petersen at the Gallery. But it's wired 3 way. I'd like it to be wired in the usual MM HH five way. But may change the tronics to a John East U-Retro Deluxe 4 knob at some point. Also the pickup cut in the PG is a total bodge. So I'll get a new one made when I get the East pre, it will need switch holes instead of the Strat type switch it has now.
 17.
Looks great. You say it's leagues ahead of any Fender in terms of being solid, what in comparison to a Warwick?
Good question. It's much closer to a Warwick than a Fender. Everything on this bass feels well thought about and with usability and durability in mind. The open tuners feel very smooth, firm and accurate, but at the same industrial, built to last. Better than Fender or Warwick. The bridge/tailpiece is very solid, shame there's no ball end loading option and sideways adjustment like a Warwick, but there are lovely details like the bottom of the very solid saddle grubs, they are dome ended, and there's no movement, perfectly tapped and died. Less fussy than a Warwick, much more trustworthy than a Fender BBOT. The neck joint is 6 screw, so it feels rock solid on the body, like a Warwick 5 bolt. String alignment is near perfect. The nut is perfectly cut. The HH pups and active electronics are a bit overkill, they don't have the subtlety a range of the Corvette $$, and certainly nothing like a John East. I may end up getting an East for it in the future. Overall, it feels similar to a Warwick in terms of being rock solid and reliable, Fenders always felt a bit delicate, even the 5 strings I tried. And for me, Fenders and Warwicks have a feminine side, this Stingray doesn't, it's a big old lump of ManBass.
 18. I just came home with my first ever MM after buying it from the delightful Chris (giblett123).Thank you, Chris!! I'm stunned by its quality and playability. It feels like a real professional, excellent quality, superbly designed and built instrument. It's rock solid. Leagues ahead of every Fender I've owned. And check that birdseye flame maple!! What a bonus! Now I have to relearn all the London Zulu bass lines and transpose from 4-string drop-D to standard 5 string. Just what I need to inject some new life and deeper frequencies into them. I'm very excited
 19. I just bought a gorgeous 1988 MusicMan Stingray 5 from Chris. He's been extremely accommodating, fantastic comms, and the bass is even better than I hoped it would be. It's fabulous and I am overwhelmed with delightedness! Chris, it was really lovely to meet you, and thank you so much! Very best wishes, Nigel x
 20. That looks damn cool, Dave!
 21.
Nige, I've merged them both together.
Ahh that's kind, thanks Billy! Greatly appreciated mate x
 22.
You have to listen to them first before you decide that you don't like them. Maybe their songs pop up on the radio. I had to tolerate half an hour of Roxette at work yesterday (we take it in turns to choose the music(
Ah I see. I do understand the first bit through
 23. Back on topic. Why would anyone want to listen to music they don't like? Can't understand it. Even if you like what the bassist is doing, if the context is not enjoyable then what's the point?
