1.
I don't wish to imply any disrespect to properly qualified electricians, but my reading of the HSE regulations suggest that, even without ANY qualifications, testing and stickering my own gear would NOT be illegal, or even liable to any other claims. Provided I felt competent to do the checks. There is no PAT tester's exam needed. I am not an electrician, but have a good graduate level understanding of electricity and electronics, plus plenty of DIY experience of the inadvisability of playing fast and loose with the mains. The PAT test procedures appear pretty easy to understand and carry out. The battery operated PAT test units seem to do everything band gear requires. PAT tests aside, we are probably still liable to some degree if something goes wrong and we were the one who sets up the PA and hands a mic to a clueless backing vocalist? I absolutely do not want to go down the route of false pass stickers, but it still seems that anyone can decide whether they feel able to do their own tests and still be within the law.
how would you prove your competence in court?
 2. You DO need training to competently PAT test and be legal doing so. But refresher training is not necessary as long as you retain your competence with regular testing. We're talking removable electrical cables here, not safety testing your amp or other equipment which requires more training and expertise. Your best bet is to visually inspect your cables and equipment before use. A venue may ask to see your actual PAT records, not just a label on the kit. I'd probably recommend testing every year for regularly used cables, it's about risk assessment, the regulations are woolly about intervals. If your cables are in good condition and have moulded plugs with the correct fuses, you should be ok. But remember that fake labels could get you and the venue into trouble if there's a fire, both legally and for insurance reasons. You both have duties and liabilities under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. Hope that helps a bit.
 3. Tune!! Really really like it, and I luuurve the vocals. They are all good mixes, but one is brilliant, great depth, clarity and dynamics which really brought the song and the lead and backing vocals to life. I REALLY enjoyed listening to it - that is, of course, the one I voted for. Great work people, you should all be delighted with the standards you've achieved.
 4.
You're in luck. Found a pair in my spares box. They'll cost you a tenner but you will be as happy as a man with two knobs.
I need one too, preferably three (mmm confusing?) Any ideas where I can get one, preferably three? Cheers x
 5. Tonight! On at 7.45 sharp. Don't be late
 6. Superb basses. I used one for ages as my only bass. Best of luck with your sale.
 7.
Born a month after me, this is the closest to DOB bass I'll ever see
You're lucky, mine would be a 1964 (L-Series natch) and cost me a bloody fortune
 8.
That's gorgeous. I've never seen the one piece scratch/control plate before.
Thanks man. They were only on the early 80s USA Standards as far as I know. Some people hate the one-piece PG, but I think they look really cool
 9. Massive car MOT bill so I'm having to sell my beloved 1983 USA Jazz and buy a Fender Japan Jazz to free up some cash. This really is a superb Fender Jazz, it sounds big - deep with a snarly high end - with what I am told are sought-after Smith era pickups with the white covers. It's all original and was born on the 29th July 1983 according to the neck stamp. It's in great condition - a few small dings and knocks here and there but nothing deep or through the paint, the neck is very clean. The neck is standard narrow Jazz width and shallow C profile, it's very, very comfortable. It had a small walnut side shim which I reckon was factory fitted, but I have replaced it with a sliver of plectrum - it's honestly not an issue and string vibration in the headstock is excellent, and the neck socket is well cut and tight. It is a four bolt plate and also has Fender Microtilt adjustment for optimum neck pitch. Action is low and smooth and there is loads of life in the frets. The neck lacquer is in near perfect condition. Tuners are the original part-enclosed Fenders and they are stable and accurate. It has the original single piece pickguard in single-ply white which has slightly aged to off-white, as have the Strat-style control knobs. I had Howard the Bass Doc make a gold pickguard for it which looks superb and is included in the sale. I have recorded with and regularly gigged this bass for about a year, it has never let me down and I've had numerous compliments on its sound from bassists and punters, although my POD X3 is obviously part of that sound. PRICE & CASE OPTIONS For £950 you get a nearly new Fender SKB moulded case with two keys which I bought from Lozz on here. It's a perfect fit and offers extremely good protection. For £875 you can have it with the OHSC from my mate's Fender Japan Power Jazz Special (a road worn (Fender we believe) Tweed case with no branding) but you'll need to collect it from me in Ealing, west London as I don't trust it to hold up through the courier system. For £850 you can have it with no case but you'll need to collect it from me in Ealing, west London. No trades, sorry. I prefer cash on collection, or bank transfer. If you arrange and pay for a courier to collect it from me I will pack it securely for you. You are more than welcome to visit me at home in Ealing (or at a Kit Richardson gig) to have a play on it. 10.
An entertaining rant by Mr Inglis but entirely suspect. Seven of his ten suggestions involve either reducing his overhead; placing limitations on his competitors; and forcing both his suppliers and 'the guvvinment' to hand him (and his business sector) scads of cash with no strings attached. That his enterprise has recently closed may explain his focus on finances and it is in some way understandable As is the case with so many people these days, Mr Inglis sees himself as the victim, that it is all someone else's fault and that his problems would be solved by a free hand-out.
I wholeheartedly agree Skank, the geezer wouldn't exist without the acts to book and the people who turn up to the venue to see them. While I believe his rant is really about touring bands in medium sized venues and not the sorts of venues most of us play, he has neglected the issues bands face, and the what the venues can be doing to encourage audiences into them and keep them coming back, especially for venues putting on largely unknown acts.
 11. This is what Kit wrote, and I agree. This would be a great list if it addressed that fact that the vast majority of bands playing small to medium venues do. not. get. paid. London venues like the Lexington and Shackwell Arms have promoters who welcome hundreds of people through the door, but do not even give the bands a few free drinks. This is when tickets cost £7-9 quid, and the bar is rammed 'til 2am. Being a musician, particularly in London, is f***ing expensive. We work hard and pay a lot of money to rehearse to entertain people - to bastardise Andy's plumber analogy, you wouldn't expect to supply your plumber with champagne, but you also wouldn't expect her to do the job for free. I wish more promoters would start treating bands with respect and at least covering their travel expenses, if nothing else.
 12. What do we think? ________________ To mark Independent Venue Week, former gig venue manager Andy Inglis offers a straightforward and occasionally sweary list of ten things that need to change in order to make them survive. http://thequietus.com/articles/14349-live-music-independent-music-week
 13.
Number 1 for me has to be Silldx and London Zulu. I just love their whole Afropolitian groove. Coming in in an equal second place is BRX with his rip-snorting Rock n' Roll mayhem that is Dick Venom, Clarky for the art-some left field fandango that is All the Queens Ravens and Happy Jack and Mac Daddy with their heads down, no nonsense, pint of bitter please landlord, classic rock n' blues that is The Junk Yard Dogs. All of them a grand night out. Still trying to get to Kit Richardson, and hoping to see The Jetsonics, as they look my kind of bag
Thanks Sean You can see yourself in this mate, the only video of London Zulu I know about. http://vimeo.com/46678884
 14. Devon Sproule is damn cool. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsjWSHj6YQc

 16.
Thanks for the heads up on this, not heard it but will be acquiring a copy once I find out where I can get one from!
Here you go mate, £2 download from Bandcamp http://infictions.bandcamp.com
 17. Have you heard GarethFlatland's band InFictions? I bought the album last year and it's wonderful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMzUl8Qmozg
 18. Great night, great venue, and the sound guy Julian was brilliant. One of the best gigs we've done and there was a great crowd of people. Lovely!

 22.
I guess a video of you playing exactly what your told would be the biggest selling point!
And a with a bit demonstrating one's personal hygiene regime and general affableness
 23.
yeah but for that money its worth a play for those without the necessary skills to pull that off. very nice playin though.
What problem does it solve? What new technology is it using? How does it facilitate a new form of expression with a guitar?
