I think I'll just use that Ignore function for the first time during my time on BC. I'm just too tired to argue with this kind of rant, when one of the most melodic bassplayers and musicians on the whole, along with other cats, is blamed for showing off chops. Don't you really think it's more than stupid to make such statements about these cats judging from 4 minute video? All I can say, is, stop talking nonsenses, go buy that album, listen to it about hundred times, and if you still think that they're showing off chops.. Then please show us music, which is really melodic.
Since you have me on ignore, you won't hear this, which is a shame. But maybe you are already familiar with the piece. It has incredible soul, and he improvised it under pressure with Zappa directing him while he recorded it. Patrick O'Hearn. You could also checkout Echidna's Arf (Of You) from Zappa's Roxy & Elsewhere for Tom Fowler playing some amazing immensely powerful Rock/Jazz, it's immediately followed on the album by Don't You Ever Wash That Thing?, the very end of which displays some of the most beautiful bass harmonisation I have ever heard. Since we are on Zappa's bassists, check out Scott Thunes on Big Swifty from Make a Jazz Noise Here.

South East Bass Bash Year 4, Surrey, 27th November 2010
Done!
Sorry Nik, I have put this up before but perhaps was not explicit enough. Would you kindly amend the gear I will be bringing to .. silddx: Chris Squire Electra Evolution build, Squier Classic Vibe TTS Stratocaster, POD X3 LIVE. Thanks mate. -
In terms of finishing, I have used the Halfords type acrylic and compared to Tonethech Luthier Supplies Pre Cat Nitro Rattle cans, it is not very good at all. I am a complete amateur at refinishing and I got a great finish with the pre cat Nitro. £15 a can. You can wet sand it after 24 hours, well I did, and get a lovely glassy finish quite quickly. If you need the method I can help you, or talk to Tonethech themselves, they are incredibly helpful. EDIT: Oh I see, you have sprayed it already.
My usual stuck record - you cannot go wrong with a second hand Westone Thunder 1A. 80s jap basses that are incredibly good value for money - great build quality and playability - the 1A active sound is immense. Heavy, though. They are always cropping up on eBay - there is an over-priced one currently but you'll often get them under £150. Or Gumtree. I paid £110 for one in great nick about a year ago.
Totally +1 on this.

Been a good year really. play about once a month in the Camden Crawl circuit and a few others with Kit Richardson. Always a good turn out and we have a few followers at almost every gig. I suppose it's because it's a reasonably inexpensive night out for music lovers. No money because we do it for the love and promotion. Done little with Krupa apart from a couple of bigger venue shows, she's been very busy touring with Transglobal and working on their new album. Playing a big cancer charity event on Saturday though. But Krupa's album is out shortly so I guess we may be gigging more in the new year. Haven't noticed any real difference, if anything our audiences are getting bigger and bigger. Quite encouraging.

Bloody hell! So the heat and scraper method actually works! That's the most useful photograph I think I've ever seen! Thank you
Aren't all of those outside Simmo's budget?
Possibly, but not by much, there are also some S/H ones on here I think too.
If your current bass feels good to play then the best and cheapest option is to change the pickups and strings. There are a dozen great pickups you can buy for a PJ. Other than that, if you're going for a Jazz you won't look unique anyway, so get the best one you can find. It's what the bass sounds and plays like that should really matter. Only my opinion but I think a Squire beats any Vintage in all departments!
Good advice that.
+1 for Squiers. An Affinity or a Standard Jazz from them is well worth the money!
Affinitys are a bit lower budget, go for a CVJ or a JMV, they are much higher build and component standard and they will hold their value much better. Another thought is to go for the VM Jag, it's basically a Jazz with a P neck pickup anyway and will look much different to the standard Jazz style. Something to think about. I'd love one, in white of course http://www.squierguitars.com/products/sear...rtno=0327900506
yeah i have looked at a few of the squier basses, and some of them look really good, like the squier standard jazz in walnut satin, but from what i have read, and heard in some videos they can be a bit of hit and miss :/ plus im an arkward sod and don't want a squier like everyone else but it doesn't mean i'm totally against the idea if i can find one i like
I think for the sort of money you want to spend, you should get the best instrument you can for it, in the end you stamp your own identity on it. And you can always customise a Fender Squier easily. When you can play with about £800, then you can afford to get really individual. I know you don't want a Squier but they really are excellent basses for the money, I played two VMJs in two different shops and they seemed nearly identical, as were the CV Stratocasters I played, I bought one too, it's got great tone and plays beautifully and I have ahad quite a few trats in my time. You really have to take a lot of what people say with a pinch of salt sometimes, the other brands you name could be just as "hit and miss", whatever they mean by that. The only company I've played instruments from that were almost perfect in terms of quality control is Warwick.

I'm afraid that, to me, it's just a jazz fusion version of Porcupine Tree , as edgy as a billiard ball. Great musicians, sounds pretty, but in the end, it's a bunch of grooves to play snazzy over and show off your chops. There's no BEAUTY in it, well not me anyway. I've never heard Janek before, but from what I read of him, what he says in his columns, and his reputation, I was expecting something extraordinary.

Roxy & Elsewhere - Frank Zappa and the Mothers. Particularly Village of the Sun and Echidna's Arf (Of You). Some incredible bass on those by Tom Fowler, but the pieces themselves are gorgeous. Napoleon Murphy Brock has a lovely, lovely soul voice.
Im ordering some of those silk gloves purely to prevent my sweaty hands ruining my strings after a 1hr set.
That's the primary reason to wear them, and they work. I wear them because I like to look like Audrey Hepburn

Oh god I'm going to get flaked up for this, but I thought that vid was so incredibly bland. I thought it would have some beautiful compositions on it, but it's just basic stuff with lots of solo ops. It's just trad pop jazz with up to date sounds and production. If you want to hear some really beautiful but more challenging stuff in this kind of genre, try the latest Allan Holdsworth album with Pasqua, Wackerman and Haslip, recorded live, it's beuatiful and has so much attitude. Sorry guys. I do realise Janek's very accomplished but this demonstrates so little imagination. I Jazz was supposed to push boundaries?

Fantastic mate! That must have been an amazing buzz! I'm really pleased for you Just a shame you've ruined it by saying you a big fan of Alain Caron

Deadlight Designs says hello from the SE of London....
xilddx replied to Deadlight Guitars's topic in Introductions
Hi, I'm a Luthier from Wallington in Surrey, I've been customising and building guitars and basses for approximately 10 years or so and am still learning every day, I am passionate about guitars and have some cool projects on the go that I'd like to share with real players who really care! I'm not looking for praise or critism but if anything am after constructive and honest opinions , some of my projects push the boundarys on what is classed as acceptable/beautiful or even ugly! so an honest view from real bass players who really have a passion for the bass guitar would be greatly appreciated. I'm new to forums so If I ever cross the line or get it wrong then please feel free to just let me know, I'm only human and I've heard through clients of mine that some forums have very strict rules to follow, so I thank you in advance. Thanks for reading this and feel free to drop a message to me I love to talk about guitars and the missus is bored sensless with me waffleing on about guitars and wood..ha ha. Regards Rob.
Dude, I've been watching the Ricky 4005 from a CMI 4001 faker build you've been doing for a BC member. Your work looks ace and I'll contact you for a body next time I do a self build. Best of luck mate. -
Well I found an hour today and have made a start! (I have a photo but it wont upload at the moment? I will add it later) I have a stave with the notes on at the top but have played all the little made up tunes in my head without looking at it. Everytime I introduce a new note I have included it on the left as a reference. I have even added a sharp and a few whole notes on the bottom stave! That link for the free paper is excellent lojo nice one, I have made mine as big as possible for now and will reduce them as I go. In fact I think I could of gone a bit smaller from the off, Running before I can walk! Im going to try and play off a sheet with no letters on and including all 12 notes to start with then start splitting it up into bars in 4/4 as and when. I can already get a grasp of the time in my head anyway and its quite fun trying the little sequences in different styles with guess what, A groove of all things who would of thunk it?
That's wickid! I've just been reading some simple stuff in Andrew McKinney's Learning to Read column in BGM this month. I was on the khazi reading the exercises on the stave with no bass obviously, and I got it right, including the timing! I hope I keep this up for once because it's really satisfying and I can see how useful it's going to be!

I use Jasmine Silk (google them) black size small. They are ace for playing with, smooth even tone, very comfy.
Why one over the other. Have both, like i do. Much better!
Like some of us said, when time is short, one makes priorities. Of course both is best, but Pete was asking if you are in a band situation, which one is the most USEFUL. Playing your instrument to a good standard is clearly more USEFUL. But both is best which is why a few of us are starting to learn, this thread gave us a swift kick in the arse to provide the extra motivation.
To do it properly you need a straight edge that covers three frets at a time. A fret rocker has a different sized edges so that you can do this all over the neck.
That is why the fret rocker is so useful. Great bit of kit isn't it Paul. Alistair, sounds like a high fret to me.

An ES-335 doesn't sound much different to a Les Paul when amplified, why would anyone think taking the paint off a Squier Strat would have any tangible effect?
-
Ha ha! I'm doing Bilbo's sight reading for bonzai babies exercise too! High G and Low B naturals, totally random (am I right in thinking that's a minor 6th interval?). It's FUN! I'm learning what the notes on the stave look like, and on the bass, and the relationship between them. AND I can hear them in my head. It just seems like the right sort of one step at a time method. Eventually we'll have all 12 notes down and I can tell all my friends I'm on the 12 Step Programme
