I can honestly say I've never used the tone on any passive instrument and I've only used the volume to mute it when I'm not playing or on rare occasions to adjust the volume if I'm feeling lazy while practicing and don't want to go to my amp.
Tone controls can be very useful, try playing reggae without turning off the treble. You can get subtle tone differences too. I see the volume as a tone control on a passive bass, and even more so on a guitar. I only use actives now anyway, passives seem so limited after using a good active bass.

How to tell difference between Fender Japan "62JB" and "62JB-US?"
xilddx replied to bass-a-licious's topic in Bass Guitars
To be honest, if you were the kind of person that told me to "do one" because I didn't want to dismantle the bass for someone else's curiosity on the chance they might buy it, I'd be quite happy not to do business anyway. As I said, if someone handed me the cash and then took it apart themselves, taking on the responsibility of not damaging it and doing the actual work, I'd happily let them do it. I'm not going to dismantle an instrument for someone that "might" buy it. If it turned out that I'd mis-advertised it, of course I would accept full responsibility. The join between the neck and the body is probably the most important piece of assembly on a bass. It's also not always the easiest to tell if it's been done badly, so yes, I'd consider it a fairly major job to take the neck off, especially by someone without experience.
I tend to agree. I have also seen lacquer cracked or removed during this process occasionally. No idea why BigJohn thinks it's a pointless thread either, it seems to me to be a quite important one. -
How to tell difference between Fender Japan "62JB" and "62JB-US?"

This is a standard looking 62 RI and the pics are large and very clear for your comparison to the one you might buy. John's who I bought mine from. http://www.fareastguitars.co.uk/usedjb5.htm -
Everybody thank you for your input. So, the sum it up. In order to visually determine the "non export US"-version there might be two signs: the spiral bridge barrels and the large tuner plates. (Thanks silddx for your links to the Fender Japan website).
Don't rely on the sprial bridge. Quite often they do special runs and could put something else on. My JB62RI had a Badass and a matched CAR headstock. The tuner plates are a more reliable test. The bridge in your pic looks to have brass saddles, could be a good sign. -
For me, knowing it's a 5 minute (if that) job to take the neck off and put it back on, it's a bit of a no-brainer. IF the seller didn't want me to, despite me sitting there with a screwdriver and £500 in used notes, I'd probably be thinking twice about it. Similar to buying a second hand car where the seller was disinclined to let me look at the state of the oil, or take it for a drive. Check the photos out here... should help...
That's almost certainly a non-export Jap US spec - large tuner plates, USA Vintage sticker, spiral saddles (can't tell for sure without taking the neck off ) Looks very nice and as it's new, going to cost well over a grand to import it. I wanted a JB-66 and that would have cost me over £1,100 to get it here from Japan with fees and duties. -
Hi fellow basschatters, This is a question for the Fender Japan experts. How to tell VISUALLY difference between Fender Japan "62JB" and "62JB-US?". I have found a nice bass second-hand, but I'm not sure about the version (bodywood and pu's). I know that the specs differ: the US version uses alder (not basswood) and US pickups. Is there any way you can tell which version it is, just by looking at it? Perhaps a slight difference in the decall, construction, screws, bridge etc? Cheers, Bass-a-licious
(third time of posting ) These should help you http://www.fenderjapan.co.jp/jb62.html http://www.fenderjapan.co.jp/jb62-us.html -
I'd think it was reasonable if I couldn't tell the buyer what wood the body was made of, or what model it is...
Really? It's a secondhand bass. Would you know everything about a car you were selling? It's a cheapish, recent, Japanese Fender bass for heaven's sake (nice drink that BTW), it's not worthy of your CSI investigation. Just look at those links I posted and compare the bass, check the serial number online, make sure the neck aand tronics are in good nick, you're done. Hosestly, all this pissing about over a £500 Jap Fender -
That's deal over for me, the body/neck could be anything
Really? On an MIJ Fender? If I had someone asking me to do that on the MIJ Jazz I sold a couple of months ago I would assume they knew nowt or were a general PITA. If it's a older or vintage USA fender then of course taking the the bass apart is a reasonable request, but not on a £500 Jap. Also, how do you know the seller would know much about taking a neck off, or be trusting enough to let someone they've never met to do it for them. Most bassists are petrified of their own truss rods, let alone taking the neck off. This is a £500 bass, I think it's a completely unreasonable request and unlikely to yield anything useful. -
Indeed, I did some research on the web looking for the tuner plates. They seem to be smaller on the non US-models. Small tuner plates are often an easily spotted sign it's an export model, probably with a basswood body (not that these are in anyway bad sounding, they are very good). But don't have the higher spec of a non-export.
Yep, that's mine. Great little units I think. I was just wondering whether it was better to power from the mains rather than direct from the Firewire port.
I bought it because of your recommendation in another thread, it is indeed ace! I didn't realise it could be powered from the FW port.
Do you power your Saffire from bus power or from power supply ?
Powered from the mains supply and connected directly to my MacBook Pro with a FW cable and 800/400 adaptor. It's the same as yours I think, Pro24 DSP VRM?
Ta silddx. I think I've already realised I'm going to end up buying 2nd hand and I've been wandering around the marketplace threads today. Good to know about the feedback section, thx for that tip. Of course the choice just confuses me all the more. If it was purely aesthetics, I'd probably get a hollow body but I think that might be 1. really limiting and 2. too bulky for a little home studio. I'm not a brand slave (if anything I like stuff out of the ordinary). But I'm not keen on the look of the Rockbass. There's sthg teletubbies about it. Maybe looks shouldn't really matter but when you're not playing it, it's staring at you from the corner. Still on the look out and getting confused by all those Yammy numbers
Post a question in the bass guitars section about the Yams, you should get a lot of answers http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showforum=16 What's your budget? You should get a good S/H Yam BB for very little, I used to borrow my mate's cheap BB 20 years ago, it was a very good bass.
Thanks Longhair. I know I want something like a jazz neck vs a fat precision neck. Have also been thinking about a shortie as the change in neck length probably takes more getting used than neck diameter. But getting a quality versatile shortie seems unlikely, so I'll have to compromise somewhere. I tried an Epi EB0 and liked the thump but nothing else comes out. Full of clarity and detail it is not. Don't know much about the Ibanez range so any pointers for these and Yammies would be much appreciated. Or come to that, any other well made comfortable and versatile instruments.
It depends how long you've been playing I suppose, but changing from bass to guitar and back doesn't present any strange problems really, and you'll do it without thinking after a short while. I would go for a normal 34" scale bass. I think I would go secondhand for your bass, and I wouldn't hesitate to get one from the Basschat Marketplace. Also it will retain most of it's value if you want to upgrade to a better bass when you're ready. We have a feedback section here too so you can see who you're buying from. Warwicks have 38mm Fender Jazz nut width so maybe a Warwick Rockbass will suit you too. They are great basses and very versatile, the active ones even more so. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showforum=19 Cheers.
First things first, I hope everyone realised my last post was a wind up ! Although, it's not much different to a lot of the stuff I've read on here about why various products are better than others. Could it simply be that the bass has been photgraphed with the strings loosened, so aren't sitting straight against the board and have therefore been pulled on to the pickups as well?
I didn't. I hear ridiculous stupid sh*t like that fairly often
You know you've probably just hit the nail on the head - my Mackie audio interface was working great on Bus power then suddenly showed power surges - I wondered why it was doing it after working fine for ages - then an external hard drive is now not showing up either... I should have suspected something but it had all been working fine. Annoyingly it's reminded me of the limitations of my current set up and made me now think I'd rather put the money it could cost to repair towards a new mac! Thanks for your thougts guys - very helpful
Hot plugging Firewire is a known issue. Although the Firewire spec is designed to be hot-pluggable, it can cause chip failure.
Hello. I'm a guitar player. This forum seems be where the best informed experts on the web hang out. I'm trying to decide what to get for my home studio so have been learning all about them here before I take the plunge. A generic thanks to all for words of wisdom I've picked up so far from dozens of threads. Downside is that it's just made me dither all the more about my choice of guitar
I just got a new USA Fender Deluxe V-Neck Strat. It is a fabulous guitar and the quality control and build is truly excellent, especially for a Fender What studio gear are you going for?
Cheers for the welcome lads. Yeah, looking forward to increasing my bass knowledge around here, got so much to learn. silldx, I'm quite liking the sound of that laid blak tune, has a good vibe to it. Not sure on the vocals though, seem a bit soft/camp to me. I prefer a bit more aggression in my reggae. I'm pretty desperate to join/form a reggae band. I could play riddims all day. I had a drummer mate who was on my wavelength but I only just got into bass just as he packed up and moved to Ghana! No one else seems interested in playing reggae around my way, though there must be people lurking somewhere, just got to find them. The band I've been asked to join is a little covers band, and considering I've got virtually no experience playing in a band I'm going to make the most of the opportunity and learn as much as possible, even if it isn't what my fingers want to play.
Yeah, I know what you mean. But they're from Bristol Good luck in your reggae band quest. BTW, check out this History of Dub documentary, it is VERY good http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=142380

I can feel myself falling towards a precision
xilddx replied to jakenewmanbass's topic in General Discussion
Nig the truth of it is that as you well know I have a couple of killer basses, I can get an extraordinary range of sounds from the Alembic (I'm still finding them) The main thinking is for the studio when I want an arsenal of sounds, I can get a sound that suits my playing a million times over from all my basses acoustic and electric, I just think that the P would finish the picture and mean that on a session I can supply everything that is required... Don't get me wrong I get a lot of good feedback from engineers and producers about my sound but to pull that last classic bass out would finish it off.
Then you are now in the enviable position of knowing exactly what you want and being able to justify the hunt for a great specimen Be careful out there
