1.
I've had a couple of basses setup by them over the years, including an old 4001. Contrary to general opinion I have never really had good service from them (in fact I find them unhelpful and unfriendly) so I won't be returning in a hurry. Thanks for the suggestion though.
Martin is a very lovely helpful guy who will spend time with you. The other guys by their own admission are not particularly, erm, customer oriented in their manner. Martin sorted my mate's 4001 to a fabulous level of playability, he reckoned it needed a new nut and he did a superb job. They will always get my custom.

  4. A tiny amount of neck shift can change your carefully set up action a mm either way at the 12th fret. I set up my Streamer yesterday and it's about 2mm at the 24th with very little buzz. I don't expect this to last long before I need to make more adjustments to keep it that way though. I have no idea why I would need precise measurements. All necks are different and behave differently, especially fretted, especially fretted bolt-ons.
  5. Cleartone Nickel Plated EMP Treated Cleartone's Nickel Plated bass strings are wound at high tension over a hex core to help maintain tuning consistency throughout your performance. EMP Treatment is then applied to all the strings to ensure longest tonal life without compromises. At one micron thin it won't feel slick or slippery to the touch, plus it lets the tone of the strings sing out more than other long life coatings. I'm fed up of my DR Black Beauties, my fourth G in a row has gone dead and I've hardly played it. DR sent me two sets after I complained about dead strings, and both Gs pretty much died very quickly. So I tried Elixirs a while back and they didn't set me alight. I and really after a piano-like tone with rich, even response and a bit of sizzle. But I don't like stainless, I prefer something a little softer feeling. Anyone tried Cleartones? They seem cheap for EMP coated strings at £24 from Stringbusters.
  6.
And the point of reviewing lots of products that readers won't come across, or ever use (since I guess more than 75% of basses in action are Fenders) is what exactly? When all is said and done, since the majority use Fender basses, then there should be a lot of Fender content. At least one major review in every edition. Your one in every 100 comment is, in my opinion, worthy of ridicule. Bass mags struggle to succeed and I guess this one will be no different ... if it spends all of its time commenting on the obscure as you suggest.
I'm sorry but this is absolute nonsense. Rubbish. And guaranteed to make for an inutterably boring magazine. If you want to stay in your time warp, please do so, but don't presume we all want to read about the boring and ordinary and unchallenging. If you do, go and buy Take a Break or something FFS.
  7. I was asked to play pick in a metal band after using fingers. He was right, it worked better, he preferred it, and I used pick from then on. It's about that, whether it sounds better or not. But unfortunately that can be subjective. Just try not to let ego get in the way.
  8.
Hi, this is my first post, so be gentle with me! I have been looking for a hipshot extender for a couple of days, and, after searching e bay etc, and many uk sites, finally ordered one from Musicians Friend in the USA. The main reason being, after paying postage and duty etc, it still worked out almost £30 cheaper than buying in UK.! Ok, it will take longer to get here, but hey,I dont really mind that. Anyone ever had dealings with Musicians Friend? would be interested to hear your views. I am 57 years old, have always loved bass, but had never learned to play, until a mate pestered me to have a go, just practicing with his newly formed band, 12 months ago. (covers band). So I had a go, read a lot, (an awful lot!!) especially on this site, outcome? have now been gigging quite succesfully, for over eight months, (first one just 8 weeks after joining band!) hey, Im no Jaco, but loving every minute of it! Thanks guys for a terrific site,it has helped me no end.
Not used MF, but I get all my Hipshot gear on ebay from the states and never had a problem. The Bass Extender is a superb bit of kit!
  9.
I dont think you should delete it all Paul in fact I wasn't bothered that it was there at all Just pointing out that the two people complaining were only slightly smaller although I see Nigels has shrunk a little bit too we all needed a tidy up so its all good IMO
Um, you clearly have only seen the smaller version mate. The original (which had correct aspect ratio) was over double that size.
  10.
I remember 1,000 years ago when I was a new player and soaking up everything I could find, watching a Weather Report video of the Domino Theory tour. I was watching Victor Bailey play and was aware that he was playing stuff at the bottom of the neck, then adding fills at the top before coming back down to the main groove without missing a beat. It was apparent to me then that, to get around the bass properly, you needed to know how it all worked and what was where. It came back to me recently when I was playing a gig. We were playing Waiting In Vain and the sax player stuck a little improvised theme in there which he was playing every time there was a change from G to C. I clocked this and, using my knowledge of theory and its relationship to the neck of my bass, I was able to hear the theme, re-frame it and harmonise in thirds and octave higher. I hit the thing spot on without dropping a note. The sax player turned with a big grin on his face that made all thoue hours of scales and arpeggios worthwhile. I don't know if anyone in the audience noticed but he did and that's enough for me.
+1
  11.
Whoops!! No disrespect guys....I joined the forum a few days ago signature has been readjusted. I personally think both techniques have their place but I don't understand how some think one is greater than the other
No problem! All techniques have their place, technique is nothing, it's about the musician, whether they have something to say and are able to express it on their instrument. I think the reason slap has so many haters is because it's a very strident technique which brings the bass forward to lead instrument status in too many cases. It is very easy to get fast at slap but very difficult to play it with any musicality. Men find all things fast attractive so they learn to slap and piss everyone off within earshot because 99% of what they do is completely unmusical and only athletic, but nevertheless think it is impressive.
  12. Neither. The discipline is in becoming a MUSICIAN. One with taste and skill enough to execute one's vision, or interpret effectively someone else's. Techniques don't mean sh*t if the music isn't there. Look at Nigel Clutterbuck. BTW, Leemarc, you might want to rethink the dimensions of your signature
  13. The site seems fine for me, but it certainly IS slow to load quite often. I like the interface now and can't really remember what it looked like before. But the value of a forum is contained within its users and how they are moderated. A fast, useable and well designed interface is all that's necessary.
  14. I'm enjoying it so far. I find the navigation a bit odd though. Some things don't work for me, like the recommended listening, it seemed to open random links, but I enjoyed the videos on there. I like the video interviews a lot, and Andrew McKinney's tutorial video is excellent. I thought the gear reviews were far too short, unless I'm missing something. I've by no means explored it all yet, But it's easy to see that £1.69 is a tiny sum of money for what looks like a truly useful online resource. I don't agree with mercuryl that you should cover more Fender stuff though and target the boring common denominator. Keep it diverse and thought provoking.
  15.
cheers for the responses, the bit that came off was a crumpled mess of fibres. I'm not sure about that Siddx, he comes into my home, eats my cats food (bleeding expensive prescription stuff too) and breaks my stuff. Ah well, whats done is done
POD X3 LIVE
I had an X3 Live and as good as it was it was not easy or intuitive to programme. I find the Bass pod XT suits my needs best. You can Bi-amp and so on, its so easy to programme and I think you don't miss any models or amp sims that the X3 has. Also Line6 edit is also much easier to use than Gearbox. I've used line6 gear for years and tend to think that after the XT they have pretty much abandoned the bass player (XT was the last dedicated bass pod). Just MHO.
But the X3 can do bass, guitar and vocal and AFAIK does everything and more for the bassist that the XT could do. I use mine for bass, and electric and acoustic guitars so it's perfect for me. I do however notice there is no HD model for the bass, but I'd expect one soon. I will probably upgrade when that happens, it's new technology for Line 6 and I expect it will be marvellous!
  17.
He said that was his daughter Gina!!! dirty boy
But nevertheless, very midwestern.
  18. Excellent quality, most of the ones you see are sh*t.
  19.
It might look the same, but encouraging people to start drawing their clef on the 'A' space and then curling up to the 'F' is just wrong. It looks scruffy (just like FFs) and takes away the importance of the clef starting on the 'F' line. If drawn correctly, it should start with a dot on the 'F' line before moving left, up and over that dot and curling down towards the 'A' space. Like this:
Do it the way skej says. The music will sound better.
  20.
Thanks for posting those Nigel. Looks beautiful but i do wonder how comfortable It would be, the bottom half of that bass is so small in comparison to the top.
Yeah, I don't know how they would balance sat down, but I imagine they would be perfect on a strap.

    POD X3 LIVE
Included USB Cable, set the DAW to recognise the POD as the input source. I'm pondering on whether instead of getting a new amp, putting together a 6U rack with Line 6 Relay G90, POD X3 Pro and a Peavey IPR. Liam
Ah, that's what I thought. Strangely, I never onxce thought of doing this! I bought a Focusrite, but I also had my drums going into it.

    POD X3 LIVE
Nige, how does the X3 handle active pups? The Basspod XT can be a little overawed by them. IME the only Sims that can handle the Spectors are the SWR and Eden models. Everything else just dirts up too much.
Seem absolutely fine mate, never had a problem, even with the clean preamps.
  23.
Yeah, I'm selling both of mine and buying a chrome Warwick instead.....(sadly at work I can't put a wink after this).
24.
Oh my, a singlecut that i would actually play. That Blonde one does look pretty tasty to me, and the 6 string further up is just f*cking hideous. Liam
Why ANYONE would choose that spastic sperm whale design over those two beuaties is completely beyond me.
  25.
I never saw the others
They've taken the images down but here are a couple .. I think the blonde one is gorgeous
