You've been told to do something about it haven't you!

Christ, this is getting worse than Mani's thread
-
Yep, it must be the strap height that's causing it. Or the lawnmower or summat. It's got to be summat that's causing it. Evil Undead, do you keep canaries by any chance?
Could be... but then you'd hit me and discover that I'll screw your statistics up no matter which way round you try to look at them...

See my thread about Wrist Rehab. I f*****d up and now have a long term problem. See a doctor, listen to their advice and then worry about how to continue playing. At that point new necks, straps etc become relevant, at the moment you're pissing in the wind because you don't know what the problem is! Steve
You'd be amazed at how so many people think the health advice of a bassist is worth more than a doctor's

I was wondering if the amount of 'expertise' on here correlated to the types of players on here
It's worth considering. I've read somewhere that ovangkol isn't the most stable neck wood (which is why it's so much fatter than the wenge ones) so would having it thinned/reshaped cause any problems along those lines? Also, having messed around with the bass most of the weekend and all day, I'm thinking it's more a combination of the balance, the neck thickness, and me just generally being short and not having the arm-span of you blokes!
Point one. Don't f*** with the Warwick neck. They are that thickness for a reason and they have shallowed recently due to some sort of technological advance they say. I have the very neck you describe and it is a little thick, but I think thicker necks are generally more ergonomic. There are some VERY small women who play bass, and upright bass, although, played properly, upright is more ergonomic due to the reduced flexion of the wrist, and less ulnar deviation. The thing is, as I posted much earlier, you don't appear to have considered that other activities may be the root cause of your problem and any diagnosis on here will be completely hit or miss, which means if you are relying on it, or you own, you are putting yourself at risk of making the problem worse. Go an see a bloody doctor! x
What kind of music are you playing out of curisosity. A lot will depend on style of music ie "spandex" Steve Harris type poses or typical jazz bassist who is engrossed in what he's doing but usually and i repeat usually stands to one side and just plays really well.. On the other hand Punk always fascinated me because you had the reason to go daft and do anything you really wanted. Then there's Prog where you need to look competent at what you are playing and generally don't move much because you are concentrating too much. Funk is another area where you can go with the music and allow yourself to drift off into the beat of the song. Folk music - well just sitting on a stool really - sorry guys couldn't resist that one. I went to see Deep Purple few months ago and they were a bunch of guys happy in what they were doing. Relaxed and as pointed out previously just seemed to go with the music and it all seemed just right considering their age group and stance in the rock world. You gotta laugh sometime Dave
And on the third hand with 6 webbed fingers, you have Wilko Johnson
Let your playing do the talking pal. Stage experience will come in time. Try not to force it. The crowd will know. Just be cool and confident and be yourself. Do not try to add any gimmicky nonsense unless it's original - and it won't be as it has all been done before. Oh and don't look at your instrument and look as though you want to be there.
Nah, that's rubbish mate.
Because playing music is the most fun thing I know how to do. It would be great if circumstances permitted not to have to do anything else and to be able to travel all over the world playing to people. Maybe an unrealistic ambition, but IMO if I don't give it a go then it will definitely never happen...
I think he might have meant why are we replying to the thread mate.
Hi, thanks for asking Primarily to try to get some ideas about what different bassists do when they are on stage - to see if there are things I can steal.. ahem - "borrow". J
Ah. Why only bassists? Just a bit of friendly advice, if you're not feeling it, only faking it, it won't look right. I know we all want to look cool and superb in videos and pictures, but really, copping someone else's moves is going to look weird. You should move naturally if you can. Just move how you feel like moving.
Do any of you have some recommendations for videos of good stage performances (rather than playing) of (non-vocal/lead) bass players? I am looking for some low-key types of things - nothing involving spandex please! I've been finding it pretty hard to find any videos which actually show more than 1 second of the bass player in the whole of a 5 minute song! But maybe I'm not looking hard enough..
What's the reason you want them for mate?
Hey all, am looking to start a new project acoustic hip hop/funk/soul with the idea of doing something different. With that i thought maybe y'all could suggest some songs for my set list Also any thoughts opinions on my idea ...
Welcome to Basschat mate May I ask why you would start a new project if you don't know what you are going to do, or have no vision for it?

Blimey, Mani joins BassChat! And now ...Fumps!!!!!
Rick 4001/3's are the ugliest basses ever created, actually not quite, but they're pretty close, there, I did it (Is this the part where I retreat to the safety of my corner, you know, the one with the big backwards 'F' embossed on it??)
I think they are some of the most beautiful basses ever created. Just a shame they play horribly and feel horrible to play. -
I don't really practice much, but I'm in four bands that play live, although only one of them is a regular gigger, the others are pro bands who do a few gigs per year. A bit like BRX, I only 'practice' when I have a new song to learn or when I write something I can't play. I very rarely practice new things from books or the internet unless there is a clear goal, I may learn a few new things now and again but I don't keep it up. I'm a confused bassist, I have trouble dealing with the seemingly prevalent current attitude that a good bassist is one who can play a variety of styles very competently and know theory, and be able to sight read. I can't help feeling like I should be able to do these things but at the same time I don't need to, and I seem to be a decent player with good ears. But I play prog pop, and contemporary African and Indian compositions which are not harmonically complex, mostly rhythmically and melodically complex, my harmony theory is poor while my rhythmic and polyrhythmic sense is pretty good, and I have few difficulties with odd time signatures. Anyway, where's Geddy to get the ball rolling on 'I'm a professional bassist in one band' ?
A couple of definitions wouldn't go amiss. By practice do you mean band rehearsals, learning how to play a specific piece, or playing abstract scales/exercises/techniques? And at what point do you count as being semi pro? Is it the point at which your earnings from playing exceed your expenditure in order to play - if you are in a band the money that you get back is more than what it costs you specifically to be in that band as opposed to what you would be spending on musical equipment whether you were in a band or not.
It's what you consider yourself to be that matters really. Use your own best judgement.
I thought this was an on-line project only? What printed media did it come from?
He was a staffer for Guitar Buyer and the editor of Bass Guitar Mag before setting up iBass.
I looks to me like you can consider this a dead project. I'm glad I didn't subscribe. It was a good idea, but the content wasn't great and it made very limited and clumsy use of the media technology available. So no big loss.
I'm afraid I can only agree. I'm sad about that. I hope it works out but it's got to be better than a very slim interactive version of Bass Guitar Magazine that's not delivered on time.
I'll pass some numbers on this weekend, if i forget, remind me Best solution i've worked with for bands that like to change form of the songs etc is for your drummer to use a Roland SPD-s/x. If your drummer knows how to use it, you can bring in loops/samples/horn parts from the hit of a pad. This is the set up i use in my band at the moment. I've also toured for almost 4 years doing the mono route, L channel click, R channel sampling.
We use that too in a couple of bands, very very useful.
