  1. I actually think that sounds fantastic. Full, gritty and aggressive. Way better than some of that Lobster guys really high end Jazz-like basses that sound a bit....too polite.

If there is one thing about Musicman I always rely on, its that they REALLY know how to make a pickup.

I was just on the EBMM site looking at 'Rays and Sterlings (I had started on the SBMM site for the new SS 'Ray colour and just wandered over) and thought I'd at least check the spec. Someone may have already mentioned it, but they're not single coils on there, they're side by side, split coils. So, in reality, it's a P/P not a J/J. No point being made here, just sharing my 'discovery'.

    Oh I didn't realise!

I think it looks great. I am a fan of natural Musicman basses. You can't use any old tat for a natural bass as it needs to have some pleasant grain!

He's a great player but I don't really listen to him. But I must say his single H tone is more my thing; sounds fantastic!

Re: Price - have you seen the c**p Gibson are churning out for £2.5k now?

Following @FinnDaves new pair of sunburst beauties, I received this today, a Fender 2016 US Standard. Shock horror, it’s not black as you can see but the classic Precision imo in sunburst/tort/rosewood. Plays and sounds fantastic, largely thanks to the Custom Shop 62 pickups. Thanks to Mark at Classic & Cool Guitars for a nice & easy transaction.

That's very similar to mine, and around the same age. I absolutely love it and stopped looking at other P basses.

  4. Whilst the demos sound great, I do think the low cost all-rounder (home and quick rehearsal) element has been lost a bit. I mean more so the low cost.

I think my 100W guitar Katana cost about £220. That amp really can work in a lot of scenarios plus it's loud, cheap, light and small.

The 2x10 would probably be needed for a bass rehearsal and the price is quite high.

  5. I have a Big Al 5 SSS and I would say it is the most interesting bass guitar I own. I am not so surprised they didn't take off massively as they are not a casual band member type of bass. The style is quirky and the pickups/pre amp are unusual.

All that makes for a great bass to me and I'm hoping I never have to sell it. No doubt if they re-manufactured these in 2022 they'd want £3500!

The Musicman factory seems to have backed off on production massively since covid.

  6. I like the idea of these 40th Anniversary instruments, but the price instantly puts me off.

I feel like since Covid we have seen the biggest price increases since I first got into playing about 28 years ago!

I'm kinda glad I don't need a new instrument now. I can look but I've not been tempted for a long time.

And also agreed entirely here too. Although in my case it's got to better my Shuttle 9.2.

I still think the closest I've got to my old Trace amp is my Shuttlemax 9.2. I absolutely love that amp.

Blimey. Lots of negativity on here so far, but then again I guess this place isn't brimming with the type of people darkglass stuff tends to appeal to.

This is actually kind of my dream amp. I love darkglass stuff in general, don't care about built in overdrive in a solid state amp (would rather have modular effects), want lots of versatility - DI, cab sim, aux, headphones, etc.

This has all that, with the added bonus of the effects modelling, which I'd see more as a way to try out a bunch of stuff, rather than as a replacement for a pedal board.

Obviously I've no idea if it's any good in real life, but in terms of what it's offering, I'm very interested.

Unfortunately, I don't currently have £900 to drop on an amp, so it'll remain hypothetical.

I am not a Darkglass user, but I do feel their market is saturated with a very similar high gain tone. Dingwalls and this high gain.

I love high gain, but personally I prefer the grind from an Orange or Ampeg (the Tech 21 pedals nail this).

I am not really sure who this is aimed at. It's very expensive; it's like an expensive take on the TC toneprints.

I'd rather use a HX Stomp into the power section of a something like a Genzler or Mesa Boogie.

  9. I bought the exact same model of bass in that finish when they were still manufacturing them, and to this day it is STILL the best bass guitar I have ever played.

Sound, feel, quality - it is perfection. I hope I never have to part with it.

    It also looks absolutely stunning.

    Great bass!

  10. I had a dream the other day that I was using my Trace AH400 GP12 SMX (correct order of name? - one of these https://reverb.com/item/28042456-trace-elliot-ah400-gp12-smx ) with my old MIJ Fender 62 Reissue P bass into a Peavey 4x10 I used to have .

The sound was exactly what I remember, Tight, punchy and bright.

I miss all of those parts of my sound which I eventually sold on. I would definitely be interested in a modern Trace Amp with a good amount of power.
