in your opinion. Some of us said keep it simple. You say you have an iPad controlling everything that cost next to nothing. You can't just control a PA with an app. You need other hardware/software as well.

I have three P's, two J's, an Aerodyne, Sandberg California and various other basses. I find that each one becomes favourite depending on my mood.

We DID get it to work. My point is its completely unnecessary for small pub gigs! You may be talking about much bigger pubs than what I am. The ones we were used to playing in were not that big and as for monitors, we had people right in front of us. No room to have monitors.

Most bands don't have this so its a luxury to most. I appreciate your sentiments towards her.

Yes but I suppose you need that anyway. As said, going through a PA is great when you have someone to control it out front but most bands don't have this luxury. If you have a giant ego who insists on being heard above everyone else to the detriment of the overall sound then that's another issue.

Roughly how long it would take to get everything set up. We usually tried to have some me time before starting.

It used to take us about an hour to an hour and a half to get everything set up. Ridiculous when you think of where we were playing and who was the audience.

I just get annoyed when I am accused of not knowing what I am talking about or not being able to make a PA work. I have been gigging for the best part of 30 years. We always used a PA for vocals. As we evolved we started putting bass through the tops, then bought subs and gradually became more and more mired in worrying about getting the right sound. Eventually I bought the current powered EV speakers/PA that we have at the moment.Sound checks became essential and yet not always possible due to venue constraints. Most pubs we played didn't have room for monitors. What I am saying is, in an average British pub, going through a full PA is not necessary. I can only imagine what sized pubs some of you are referring to but every one that we played in wasn't big enough to justify the use of a full PA when we had no one to control it out front. Its like trying too hard to be this professional outfit when you can get by with a small drum set, bass/guitar combos and a vocal PA.

We did make it work. My point is it's uneccesary.

What I don't understand is, if their next gig isn't until January and you are not socially friendly anyway, why did they sack you now? Why not wait until after the January gig? Now they have the risk of you not playing and they will miss out on the gig too.

If you have come here expecting to get a clear indication of which bass to buy forget it. you will get all sorts of different opinions on the best. Why not just pop into a shop and see what suits you?

I disagree with pretty much all of that. The drummer: Listen to a snare hit acoustically and then miked. Big difference in volume in the small pub. Dedicated monitoring is not always possible due to space constraints/money constraints How would that possibly be different? You play quieter because you are through a PA? In my experience bands have sounded great through backline WHEN IN A SMALL PUB!

Yes, we agree. If the band insist on using a PA and want you to play through it then fair enough. Im saying that for a small pub it's not needed.

A turn of phrase. It wasn't literally worrying. If you don't have to do it, its one less thing to worry about.

When drums are mic'd they get louder. We can hear the sound coming from the PA because its a small pub. This makes everything get louder. I do know that you can turn levels down. When a pub is busy, using a PA for instruments makes you tend to push things up. With backline everything is much simpler and usually quieter. Why have bass coming out of two subs or even two tops when you can be heard quite clearly with your backline?

plus we have @Silvia Bluejay out front with a tablet controlling the XR18. It makes a big difference if you have a sound man/girl controlling your sound. Most pub cover bands will not have this luxury.

I didn't ask for a lesson on how to DI. I said it's unnecessary and can cloud the sound in a small pub. I bought the PA for us to use on larger gigs. We used it successfully on larger gigs but used it also on small pub gigs. It was complete overkill and didn't add to the sound at all. I used to watch other bands playing the same pubs and they had a good sound with just backline. Everyone used to say we were the loudest band locally. Thats because we were mic'ing drums, cymbals, bass, guitars and vocals. We would have to do a soundcheck often in crowded bars where everyone was shouting get on with it!, that's fine! etc.Sometimes it was hard to get out front to hear what you sounded like. A large Pa is a waste in a pub. Unless it's huge pub. Backline is plenty and much easier to manage.

Ahem, we have PLENTY of experience of using a very powerful Electrovoice PA. We were using a big PA for small pub gigs. It became ridiculous. Worrying about DI for everything. We found that it was overkill. People want to be able to enjoy the music but also want to chat amongst themselves. I have seen people recoil at the sight and sound of a whole band coming out of 15 inch speakers with 18 inch subs. We used to mic up drums and cymbals. Everything went through the PA. we did a gig once where travel meant we couldn't take all the gear. We just put the vocals through the tops. What a difference! Balance, simplicity and clarity. People laugh at cover bands with a massive PA playing the Dog and duck!

I will give you something for it mate. I can't take something worth that much for nothing!

It's frustrating at the moment because I have an iPhone 7, which doesn't have a headphone socket. I have an old iRig which needs a headphone socket. My iPad has a headphone socket but can't download the app as it needs a more recent update. I try to update it and it says its got the latest version.🤨 Basically, I am going to have to buy the new iRig which uses a lightning connector to plug into the phones charging port instead but I cant afford to buy a new I Rig until I get back working.

We were supposed to see Saxon first when Biff had his heart problems. Then the rescheduled gig was rescheduled and now there s a chance that won't happen either. I think we are destined to never see Saxon again ☹️

If you are playing a pub, use your backline and forget mic'ing up or Di'ing. It's overkill and completely un needed. Keep it simple and you will end up with a more balanced, clearer set up.I have been down this route where we grew bigger and bigger and we finally realised we were kidding ourselves and had gear for the sake of it. It's not the Albert hall you are playing. It is refreshing to use simple backline after being caught in the mire of trying to be too professional.
