1.
Nice! Whats with that weird spirally cymbal in the back of his kit (difficult to make it out really in those photos), never seen one like that before, what does it sound like?
Sounds really cool for big swells
2. This week at Circle Studios we've had the very amazing drummer and percussionist Fergus Gerrand (Spice Girls, Madonna, Mike Oldfield, Duran Duran, Peter Gabriel, Katie Melua, Sting etc) in session doing drums and percussion:
3.
How about making the gap a "feature" rather than people wondering why it's there. If you were to send a little coloured light down there for example
Cool idea! Thanks man!
4. Lights are up in the corridor:
5. Oops. I've fallen behind on this. Here's how the corridor looked when it was done: And on this one you can see the 10 mm gap that runs the length of the corridor:
6.
Oh right-ho, get it now, makes alot of sense, so you are using those to support the ceiling right across the top of all the studio rooms (they all already have their own high mass ceilings anyway, but for the sake of looking remotely professional you need to hide the 'old' space above without reintroducing anything for sound to be transmitted through thus ruining your hard won isolation. Well that makes perfect sense
Pretty much, its a false ceiling that runs the length of the corridor so you cant see that it's just an industrial unit you are in.
7. heheh. No young padwan. It's all about isolation. You'll remember we went to a lot of money, time and effort to isolate each room from the rest of the building. If we just put up the ceiling in the normal fashion we would effectively re-couple the isolated bunkers back to the rest of the building. For that reason the ceiling can only be joined to the corridor wall and must not touch the studios. Triangles make for a much stronger structure. You can see in this picture that the triangles dont touch the studio walls:
8. Haha! Here's another clue:
9. A triangular fashion statement?
10. After 10 days of recording sessions including a 20 piece ensemble and a 90 piece choir, we got back to the much more exciting job in hand... more plasterboard arrived:
11.
Burn it out. Oh its inside........ maybe not. To the OP: Whats that bloke doing in your fishtank anyway!! A
Heheh! Setting up for vocals yesterday:
12. look for a cheap audio interface and microphone on ebay. The onboard soundcard isnt really up to recording.
13. but that's only a little bit of the room!
14. There's been no building work for a few days as I've had sessions this week that couldn't wait any longer. We were about to do acoustic guitar in this one:
15. Corridor ramps are now complete: and non-parallel walls have been framed in the white room:
16. Some non-parallel wall framing in the 'red room':
17. Gearlist is over here: http://www.circlestudios.co.uk/thegear.php There have been a few additions since that was done but it covers what you see in that rack. In other news... Here's the formwork for the new gear ramps which we are putting into the building. On a practical level they mean that all studios in the building can be reached without lifting gear up steps. What's more it means the whole place complies with disabled access requirements. We've used polystyrene for the formwork so that it can be scraped out once the concrete has gone off, thereby maintaining the isolation between all rooms: Here's the concrete going in:
18. I finally got my racks wired in! Here's one of them: TBH, in the new room, my old rack looks a bit tired. I suspect I'll be needing new furniture at some point pretty soon... (there should be an emoticon for money being thrown into a giant pit gooof)
19.
Cant get my head round where that skylight is going to be, but its making me dizzy
It's in the soundlock as you walk out of the control room (through the door with the circular holes). The 'white room' got a door frame: a solid core door sandwiched with limp mass membrane and mdf: and eventually, a door: (But not handles...). Anyway, here's a cross section:
20. Two types of light for your delectation today. First a shot of the wall lights I settled on for the corridor: Continuing the circular theme, the second is a first picture of the sky-light which is appearing above the soundlock:
21. Office is almost done:
22. There's been lots going on with the electrics this week. Splitting the buildings between the clean and the dirty power boards was finished, a (dirty) sub board was put in for the air-conditioning and we've tried a bunch of different light fittings for the corridor. I think we finally settled on one! Pictures soon. Also, one of the production rooms with the working title "The White Room" got batoned ready for rockwool and plasterboard. This pic was taken half way through that process:
23.
[snip] his mate Trev GoldenEars with the 20k monitors.... [snip]
how did I get dragged into this???
24.
Cheers sir! I might take you up on that depending on what time I'm finished etc. I do video production so I'll have a fair bit of camera gear on me. Maybe BC can look forward to Circle Studios: The Movie
hmmm... (will pm my cellphone number)
