1. Thanks guys! As an aside, here's a question for everyone... I think the door looks a little unbalanced with only two circular windows and am thinking of putting a third one further down. Anyone agree or am I at risk of over-thinking this?
2. As I've mentioned before, budget is getting a little tight at this point. As a result, rather than putting in expensive purpose built steel studio doors, I'm having them joiner built at a fraction of the cost. I'm sure at some point they'll be replaced by the ones I intended to buy in the first place but it may not be for a while. In any case, I'm uber pleased with how they are turning out. I figure the circle theme is one that should continue throughout the studio so it works well for me. Here they are: Let me know what you think!
3. ATCs are very mainstream. The big US scoring studios tend to use them almost exclusively. Dynaudio is another common main. The big difference between genelec mains and ATC ones are that you can mix on ATCs. The big genelecs tend to be about impressing clients and checking they'll be fine on big club speakers.
4. Very detailed, accurate and fast. I've worked on ATCs before. That's why I picked em!
5.
Ding Dong!! Really looking forward to anb opportunity to pop in and hear them too
You're such a tease...
6. ATCs are now fitted properly and up and running. They sound awesome!
7. Heheh. That reminds me... I need to book an appointment for my superfast broadband! Slightly out of order but, just so that you cans see the work that went in prior to the window being fitted... First the old plasterboard was cut down and tidied up: Then it was rockwooled and plasterboarded: and this time with a bit more attention to detail: and then each board was sealed with an acoustic sealant:
8. 57 is kinda midrangey for bass unless that's what you are shooting for. If I had to pick something that would just work on both and had no time for shootouts I'd go for a Shure SM7 (or a Fet 47 but that may be a bit pricey for ya!) As for Russ's thoughts... they kinda presuppose a very clean DI. There are lots of options nowadays on much more coloured options. The A Designs Reddi for example provides an amazing tubey sound. Very like mic-ing a tube amp.
9. Today was a 'new live room window' kind of a day. It could also have been called a 'back injury' day or even a 'hernia' day. It took 6 men to lift the glass (all of whom made pained faces throughout) and one to be annoying taking photos (guess which one was me... peachh). Enough chat, here's the pictures: and, almost there: I guess the last picture also gives you a feeling for the height of the lowest ceiling point in the live room...
10.
Excellent..! At last, a notation system better even than tab..! It could catch on..! What a pro...
11. Today was a cable pulling kind of a day. When I'd initially put the cable into the live room I planned for the day they would move from one side of the building to the other. As a result a rope and pulley system was put in place so that it would be easy just to disconnect the tails from the console/patchbays and scoot it to the other side of the building. Brilliant idea eh? Unfortunately, when the builders started the new control room, they thought that pulley couldn't possibly be going to be used for anything. So they dismantled it. Without telling me. Until today. As a result the point that the cables exited the old control room was about 5 feet below the roof height of the live room. In an 8 inch wide isolation gap. To say getting them out and over the top of the crawl space above the live room was tricky would be a bit of an understatement. Here are my intrepid assistants Joe and Dan up to their waist in it. The first is Joe wondering how on earth to get hold of them with Dan looking on: The Joe decides to try snagging the cables with a brush: Incredibly, he succeeds before pulling them over the crawl space above the live room:
12. Slowly slowly feels like a good description at this point! Sorry there was no update yesterday. Still lots going on though. The soundlock began to appear: and I couldn't resist putting an ATC into it's mount (for the eagle eyed, yes, I put the right hand one into the left hand mount... oops), just to have a little listen...
13. Cheers guys. Yeah it's been a long time in the making! So it's official. My knees are too old for this kind of thing. Almost there: and... done! The sharp eyed will see that there are some boards with knots and bark staining marks in them. I decided to place these strategically under the couch and under the desk so they wont be seen once the gear is in the room.
14. Aw man... I used to LOVE Kelly' Heroes! Thanks man - my knees hurt, my back hurts and my wrists hurt but I've had a cheshire cat grin going on all day!
15. My designer pointed out that the holes in the housings will act as tuned traps. Doh! They've got to go! I spent today laying the control room floor: Wha'd'ya think?
16. Today we got new lights: which we could eventually turn on: We also got housing for the ATC amps: And power in the control room... yay!
17.
I tell you what, you can polish it, you can sprinkle it with glitter, but the minute you sink your teeth into it, you are going to know the truth So polish away.....
Yup. It might be shiny but, underneath, it's still sh*t!
18. Thanks guys. Yes glass is very definitely 'I' shaped. Indeed, today one of the guys have been working on finishing the window surround. You can see in this shot the gap which isolates the control room window frame and surround from the live room window frame:
19.
made me think of this:
eek! Dont even joke. I have nightmares about this stuff! Yes, the glass will be I shaped but also has roughly a 30 degree angle in one direction and a 7 degree angle in another...!
20. <p>&nbsp;</p> <div>hahah! &nbsp;Hope it gave you as much of a laugh as it gave me! &nbsp;Here&#39;s where they go to today: &nbsp;</div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div></div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div>Its very close now. &nbsp; Our facing wood arrives Friday and electrics should be finished at the weekend. &nbsp;we can start moving gear in then. &nbsp;Unfortunately the front glass is gonna be a couple of weeks more because we plan to template and order it once the front wall is complete. &nbsp; As you can see it&#39;s quite a complex shape so we decided it was safer that way.</div>
21. No. Only about 6m. Now, I was never that great at maths but something seems to have gone awry here...
22. Some not very exciting stuff happened today so I decided to see what the control room would look like in context. I moved in a couch and a couple of lamps: Conclusion? I need a bigger couch! Once I'd had my excitement, I painted while the electrician wired stuff. Here's a picture of a not very exciting distribution board for clean power:
23. A couple of better shots of the soundlock. Approximate dimensions are 6ft x 7ft so big enough to shove an amp or even a vocalist in at a push. First shot is from the corridor into the soundlock (and you can see on into the big room): Second shot is from the other direction, the live room into the sound lock and on into the corridor. You can also see straight into the door of one of the other rooms:
24. Glad you like 'em guys! Here's a shot of the room from another angle. You can see that the place we broke through the wall has now been tidied up and lintels fitted. You can also see the cable troughs on the ground which will run around the edge of the desk and back to the racks at either side. Electrician will be in all weekend. On Monday we start work on the front wall.
25. Complicated question for all sorts of reasons which I won't explain here but we will be ready! An exciting day today as our custom monitors arrived... from ATC: As you can see from the label these are based on the SCM 110 ASL: The difference from the standard 110ASL is obvious from this photo: As you can see, the front wall of the cabinet has been designed to have the same slope as the front wall of the control room. Our designer, Thomas Jouan-jean at Northward Acoustics (in case you had missed that) provided a spec for the needs of the room and ATC calculated the ideal cabinet size/volume etc for our needs. There are some days that life feels really good. This is one of 'em!
