1. haha! Back wall is now complete other than diffusors, second fix electrics and fabric covering:
2. Today I probably got over excited as we broke through the wall to join my two buildings together. Rather later than I'd hoped (because it took a considerable amount of time for ADT to get their act together and extend the alarm system) but break through we did. I'm sure how absolutely cool this moment doesn't translate as all you see is a pile of rubble and a hole in a wall but here it is from the control room side: and from the corridor side: In much more exciting news though (he joked)... ...lots more homatherm went into the building: (It amazes me after all the insulation that has gone into this room that there is any room left at all!)
3. Thanks guys! Glad you like em. More bits and bobs on the way!
4. Hehe! Excellent ideas, all of them! Am sure what I've actually bought at this point won't be nearly as exciting to you guys as it was to me but, fwiw, here are the first of them. I heard the Theatre Royal in London was selling off a bunch of its oldest parcans. Now these aren't any old throwaway things but, rather, are from the era when things were made properly. Made by the "Strand" Company in, I believe, the early 1950s these, for me, are things of great beauty. I bought a pair and had them re-polished. They'll be going in the back corners of the control room and positioned to light up the console. Let me know what you think:
5. Am lovin all these guys (though they're all wrong)! Keep em coming! It's giving me ideas for other stuff I could get that would be cool!
6. No cigar (but I'm liking the pinball and space invader machine idea!)
7. So, we figured it was time to start looking for some cool things to adorn the studio. We particularly wanted to make sure we managed to get at least a couple of items with real character. Things that would be cool even for non-studio-geeks. The first of these arrives tomorrow. Anyone got any idea what we might have gone for?
8. The carpenters got significantly waylaid from the control room work today because the new steel security doors arrived and had to be fitted: However, the door into the machine room is now done and the place finally feels like a control room!
9. It was so 'proper' we found that it was just too heavy to carry in safely so we've got some kind of lifting machine coming to help out. In the meantime, the inner ceiling profile started to appear: the soundlock door got framed: OSB'd and boarded:
10. Thanks guys. Today was a better one. Live room glass arrived: At 25.5mm thick and a shade under 300kg I suspect tomorrow is going to be a tough day for a different reason!
11. erm... ahem! After a slightly stressful morning as the builders realised that the homatherm in the rear trapping had been fitted back to front (yes it is directional!) the whole back wall had to be taken down and put back together again. I also went to pick up the 200sq metres of engineered wood flooring I had ordered only to be told they sold it to someone else who walked in off the street on Saturday I begin to wonder whether there is actually a god and whether he is doing some of this stuff just to fcuk with me... On another note, the mains didn't turn up today as previously expected so if anyone is interested... you'll have to wait!
12.
Your real name isnt Willy Wonka is it??
It can be whatever you want it to be mate
13.
Can we have a basschat day trip / guided tour when it's finished?
Sounds like a plan!
14. Hehe. Settle down in the cheap seats! Sparky in again today running cables for the front wall and sorting out the power to the machine room. Here's a view across the control room:
15. More front wall action. The cavities underneath the speaker boxes will house the remote amps:
16.
Where would you rate Yamaha HS80s - low or mid end ? Reason I'm asking is I do most mixes on headphones (BeyerDynamic DT880s) but always cross reference with the monitors and they always sound a bit boxy if that makes sense ?
Sorry, missed this previously. I'd certainly put them in the low end category.
17. Heheh This may be another explanation for what you see: http://www.moillusions.com/2006/04/parallel-lines-illusion.html
18. This one might give you some idea what you are seeing:
19. It's not a fish eye lens (but is a wide angle) but the main thing you are seeing is some pretty crazy angles in the woodwork. I'll try and get a shot that shows you a bit more clearly.
20. More work on the front wall: And almost done...
21. Thomas arrived Sunday and the guys got on with building the soffit mounts and front wall today: They were looking pretty happy by lunchtime: and were already working on the other side when I decided I better start stripping down the old control room ready for the big move:
22. So, we spent the day today doing the first fix in the control room. Here's my spark hard at it putting in lighting runs (sorry, crappy iphone picture):
23. As you can see from this picture, the back wall is all but finished now save for that massive hole on the left, the fitting of the diffusors and the fitting of the fabric. Today, the electricians are in for first fix.
24. Why buy a mixer? If you prefer quality over features go for a small recording interface. Which one you go for is dependent on budget and channels needed. In respect of the effects you mentioned, better to use the once in your software/DAW. They are likely to be of better quality than anything in a mixer
25. And once all the boarding is done and we have filled the edges with acoustic sealant we have an airtight room: [er... save for that 10 foot high hole in the back wall!] You can see from the above picture that work has also started on the rear wall absorber. I'm not showing pictures of the membranes at Thomas's request but you can here see the absorption materials
