1.
I'll let Glen Matlock call you "Philistine". But thanks for the input!
Aah, what an album. His backing band for that was the late 3 Colours Red. Gotta love the Glen. P
2. Call me a philistine, but VVT every time (and all ramped up 100%). P
3. Who is this guy? I see his beardy face virtually every time I visit eBay. P
4. I like the tone on the first sequence...it's a little less wooly, so I'd like to put that down to it being a more contemporary take. ...my guess; Part#1 is the 2000 MIM Part#2 is the 1958 Part#3 is the 1971 Good one & nice playing! P
5. If someone fancies a white/maple one, I am sooooo prepared to get a black one and swap necks... P
6. I've transcribed what Bass Player have printed below. Since it's birth in 1976, the Music Man StingRay has endured as one of the most iconic electric bass designs. Guitar and bass string pioneer Ernie Ball purchased the Music Man brand in 1984, moving production from the original Fullerton, California facility upstate to its own digs in San Luis Obispo, where it continues to build instruments. In the '90s, Ernie Ball began licensing its Music Man designs for offshore production under various names; since the early '90s, the brand entrusted to maintain Ernie Ball's high standards has been Sterling By Music Man (SBMM). When we reviewed the SBMM SB14, Ray 34 and Ray 35 basses in May 209, we praised the way they copped that classic StingRay vibe at a competitive price point ($600-$700). This year, SBMM has raised the bar - and dropped the price - with it's new SUB Series of basses. With its 3+1 headstock, vintage tinted maple fingerboard and black on black pickguard configuration, the Ray4 has a classy and classic look. In terms of body and neck dimensions, the Ray4 was nearly indistinguishable from the original - the neck's deep C profile and narrow nut width felt fantastic, and the neck's satin finish upped the bass's vintage feel. Plugged in, the Ray4 convincingly captured that StingRay thing - punchy, aggressive and big bottomed. The 2-band EQ - bass and treble cut/boost with a center indent - wasn't the most exciting preamp I've played, but it was helpful if I wanted a little booty boost or high-end pop. The bass did the StingRay thing surprisingly well, but what floored me was the Ray4's price tag of just $260 I've definitely tested basses three times the price that weren't half as fun to play. If you love the look and sound of the famed StingRay players like Louis Johnson, Pino Palladino, Tony Levin, and Flea, here's your chance to pay tribute without having to drop a lot of cash. For its rock bottom price and big bottom sound, the SB series Ray4 earns a Bass Player Editor Award. P
7. Andertons are listing them at £280. Made in Indonesia. P
8. There was a very short but favourable review in US Bass Player (May 2012). $280 street price. 2 band EQ. I've never owned a Stingray before (although I own a Bongo) and I have a penchant for cheap basses. I's a pity that they're not carrying a black/rosewood version (although I suppose there's also someone thinking it's a pity they're not doing a white/maple one). P
9. There's a new range of Sterling Subs coming. Hold your money for the moment. First reviews (Bass Player US) indicates they're seriously cheap and seriously good. P
10. I had one of these. #222. Traded it for an Ibanez Roadster. Sheesh. Where was my head at. P
11. If you search hard [on Youtube], you'll turn up some footage of them live in a record store about seven or eight months back, playing to a couple of people and a small girl, while shoppers were browsing the racks. Now they've got a number one album. I bought it the album and it's a good collection of tunes...even though my usual fair is a darn site heavier, I'd happily recommend the CD to anyone. P
12. I had a black one with the scratchplate (not sure whether this qualifies it as an export or non-export). Played lovely, but I had to shift it to reduce my overdraft. I'd like another one. P
13.
PM'd re: Optigrab
As soon as I saw that I thought of you!! P

22. I'm giving some consideration to parting out the following: ...my only condition is that all the parts go to good homes and that I'm not really left with anything. My cat isn't for sale. Despite what the above says, a brief rundown of the parts are as follow: Mighty Mite Jazz-bass neck. Straight, satin smooth, lovely...£75.00 (The logo is a peel off transparent transfer, it'll come off clean) Machine heads are unbranded Fender units (I got them here some time ago, came off a reissue P-bass). £20.00 **Held for Untune** Control plate is from a Fender Geddy Lee bass (soldering on the reverse is best described as icky...I tried various pickups/wiring, but am reasonably sure it would clean up fine). £15.00 Bridge is a Fender model with the spiralled/grooved saddles. £10.00 **Held for Untune** Pickup plate is a Fender unit. £5.00 Neck plate is of unknown origin...I'll throw that in with the neck. Pickups. There's a Wilkinson P-Bass in the p-bass position and an unbranded MM-style unit at the bridge. The Wilkinson is high output and very lively (I've also got one in another bass, they're that good) £12.00, a fiver will secure the MM-unit.**Wilkinson pickup held for Tom1946** The body is quite nasty; plywood and has two quite humungous routs in it, but the paint-job is something else, don't you think? If anyone wants it, I'm happy enough to let it go to anyone who will cover postage costs. I'll cover postage on the small parts, but the neck will need boxing/mailing unless anyone wants to pick it up (I'm near Reading). If anyone wants the whole thing, contact me as I'm sure I can get you the name of a good doctor. Now the nasty stuff. If anyone is interested in the neck, I would take it with the machines. I didn't fit these, but as a word of warning, the E-string machine isn't smooth, which alludes it's not set that well. The others are fine. That's it. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask. Cheers P
