3. Gator 2U rack bag. Bought a few years ago but has only had very light use and has been siting in my wardrobe unused. Comfy padded handles, handy pocket in the front and has a strap, nice and light and easy to move around. Does offer a reasonable amount of protection as there is a wooden box under the material exterior. Installation depth is 35cm. All 4 rack screws are present and correct. £20 plus p&p Thank you for looking, please don’t hesitate to ask any questions.
 4. RME Fireface 802 audio interface. In excellent condition. Comes complete with box, manual, USB cable, power cable and installer CD. Brilliant audio interface; sounds nice and clean and rock solid reliability. The only reason for selling is because I have upgraded to the RME UFX II solely for the DURec feature. 5. Helicore Hybrid Light Tension double bass strings. I got these from Basschat a while ago to try on my bass. While they are great strings and very easy to play, I decided that they weren’t for me on my bass. The strings had been used when I got them and I had them on my bass for a couple of weeks, I would describe them as well used with a reasonable amount of life left in them. If you’re interested in trying these strings then getting these offers you an affordable experiment - unlike buying new! £25 including p&p to mainland UK (other destinations please ask). Thank you for looking, please don’t hesitate to ask any questions.
 6.
Hi Ian, Ed here from Dublin again. Is the bow still available by chance?
Hi Ed Yes, the bow is still available. Please send me a PM to discuss. Cheers. Ian
 7. I played a 5 string Sandberg a few days ago and I was very impressed with it. The neck felt really smooth and easy to get around, for me it was on the thin side and slightly wide but not difficult for my small hands to get around - certainly not as thin and narrow as an Ibanez. It felt somewhat between a Ken Smith and Sadowsky, (based on my memory of owning these basses several years ago). The whole bass felt solid without being heavy and the sound was what I want from a bass - lots of fundamental tone with strong mids and a pleasing high end. I didn’t play around with the electronics because the tones set flat were spot on for my taste, for me this is a sign of a good instrument. I’ve been looking for a 5 string for a while now and I feel that a Sandberg is a good bass for me to get. I’m sure the Maruszczyk basses are great as well, however I’ve not played one myself to compare to. I have played a few jazz 5 basses and while Fender basses are good I felt the Sandberg was better. Of course this is just my opinion so take it with a pinch of salt.
 8. This is an amazing bass - I had it commission from Bernie Goodfellow and later, as my circumstances changed, sold it to Tor on basschat. Tor is a great guy to deal with and I can fully recommend him and the bass.
 9.
The thing is that you can get to lower notes (I have them on my Stingrays, but only to low D) but I find that the 'selliing point' of a 5 string bass, for me, is the 'lateral movement'... being able to span a wide range without going up and down the neck. It allows you to play a lot of things very comfortably... and the extra few low notes sometimes are nice, but nothing more than the cherry on top. A hipshot, as nice as it is, doesn't give you that.
Agreed, that's how I like to use a 5 string bass.
 10.
If weight is a concern, FWIW I've had a Ray35 which weighed a ton (probably the ash body) and the cheaper Ray4 which was very light indeed (no I didn't weight it)!
Yes, I'm hearing that they are heavy, so that's the Ray35 out of the runnings.
 11.
The Swiss Army Knife of basses but all the ones I had were heavy. Surprised no one has mentioned the 'M' word. http://basschat.co.u...aruszczyk-club/ You'll get exactly what you want from Adrian.
Yes, I really like the G&L basses but too heavy. Maruszczyk basses do look great and I like the idea of getting somthing just right for me but they may be a bit out of my price range, also if I did have a bit more to spend then I'd probably go with a Sandberg. Cheers, for all the suggestions - they are all very much appreciated!
 12.
Look at Spector's Korean ranges, I love my Spectorcore and others say the Legend is great. Super value, well within your price range and brilliant quality.
Thanks for the idea. Spector are great basses but I've tried them in the past and the ergonomics didn't suit me. Maybe I should give them a try again as I want to keep an open mind and don't want to miss out on possibilities. Cheers.
 13. Back up for sale is my Paul Bryant Double Bass, soloist model. Paul is well known for making fantastic double basses in the English/Italian style. I’ve been fortunate to commission and own 3 of his basses and each one has been amazing and a delight to play! Paul describes his soloist model as, “A great little bass, with classic Italian styling, good for Arco work, jazz, or general gigging. Compact and easy to transport, but with a big sound, a very versatile bass.” I’ve used this bass in all kinds of settings, big classical symphonies, chamber music, solo recitals, recordings, jazz groups of all sorts and music theatre/pit work and I’ve always been very happy with how great it sounds and plays. Also I’m amazed at how the bass holds up against others that are bigger and much more expensive. The particulars for this one are as follows: length of back: 43” string length: 41” rib depth: 8 1/2” (8 3/4’s at the widest point on the lower bout) upper bout: 20” lower bout: 25 1/2” varnish is red, golden, brown swell back of lightly flamed maple (most of Paul’s basses are flat back and plainer wood) sides of medium flame maple neck and scroll of highly flamed maple front of medium grained Sitka spruce comes with a certificate of authenticity In 2013 Paul valued the bass at £7000, so it would be a bit more by now. Sale price is £6150 (sorry no trades) Other Bryant basses and soloist models do come up for sale at lower prices but Paul made different levels of bass and this one is in the top of his range, Paul himself said that this bass was, ‘one of the better ones’. Also this particular bass has several more things going for it; swell back rather than flat (costs a lot more to make in the first place), much more flamed wood than is usual for a Bryant bass, it’s been played in a lot and the sound has really matured and improvement works by Malcolm Healey. The bass comes with a David Gage Realist pick up installed and a light soft case. You’re very welcome to come over and try the bass and any questions please do ask.
 14. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions, I really appreciate them all. From what’s been said here and what I’ve heard the SUB or Sterling Ray35 do sound ideal and the new version of the Yamaha BB basses are said to be lighter so that’s a possibility as well. I prefer to try before I buy, so the next step is finding these basses near by - not so easy in rural Dorset! So might have to end up just buying something to give it a go and hope for the best. interpol52 & Frank: USA SUB? I thought they where made in Asia?
 15.
There's a Ray 35 for sale on Belfast gumtree for £500. Well worth a look as it's been modded by the guitar tech owner. Frank.
Thanks for the heads up
 16.
If a Yamaha BB425 is too heavy a Stingray 5 is going to be even heavier. A Sterling 5 wouldn't be, though - much lighter. I have one that is considerably under 9lbs.
Under 9lb for a sterling 5, that sounds ideal. Now I’ve just got to find one to try out!
 17.
I have a Yamaha BB425 for sale in the classified... 18mm spacing at the bridge.... http://basschat.co.u...__fromsearch__1 6 months play from new in very good nick.
Hi Paul Thanks for letting me know. The bass looks really nice and a great price, however a bit too heavy for me though. Good luck with the sale.
 18.
I had a sub ray 5, it was very good and fairly light. Don't have it any more but it was good while I had it. I think the spacing is less than 18mm, in fact I know it was. Loads of stuff less than £1000 that is excellent (most things i have in fact), although I don't know instruments that have 18mm spacing so can't advise. Are there not Yamaha fitting in that category?
Thanks, string spacing wise I don’t want 19 or 16.5, so anything in between is fine. I’ll have a look into Yamaha.
 19. Hi All After having tried to simplify my playing with just using 4 string basses, I find myself missing having a 5 string bass, so I’m looking to get a cheap or reasonable priced 5 string to get back into it. I was thinking of the Sterling by Musicman Ray35 as it seems to fit what I’m looking for, then I saw the Sub Ray 5 and it seems really good value for the money. Does anyone have any experience with these 2 basses and is the Sub 5 usable as it is or does it need upgrading? Also how heavy are these basses? Any other ideas for a similar 5 string would be appreciated. I’m happy to swap out electronics to get the sound I want, so the main thing is the feel and spec of the instrument: 34” scale, 18mm string spacing, light weight, well balanced, cost under £1000 (ideally as cheap as possible but still a good instrument). If I can afford a bit more then the Sandberg basses look great but that’s stretching things too far for now. Thanks all
 20.
So... Photobucket seems to have stopped letting me share images, that's new... Imgur it is from now on then.
I was at Wal HQ this week and saw this bass in the flesh. The maple facing is absolutely stunning and unique! Really nice instrument
