    [font=Verdana][size=3] Hi All[/size][/font] [font=Verdana][size=3] After having tried to simplify my playing with just using 4 string basses, I find myself missing having a 5 string bass, so I’m looking to get a cheap or reasonable priced 5 string to get back into it.[/size][/font] [font=Verdana][size=3] I was thinking of the Sterling by Musicman Ray35 as it seems to fit what I’m looking for, then I saw the Sub Ray 5 and it seems really good value for the money. Does anyone have any experience with these 2 basses and is the Sub 5 usable as it is or does it need upgrading? Also how heavy are these basses?[/size][/font] [font=Verdana][size=3] Any other ideas for a similar 5 string would be appreciated. I’m happy to swap out electronics to get the sound I want, so the main thing is the feel and spec of the instrument: 34” scale, 18mm string spacing, light weight, well balanced, cost under £1000 (ideally as cheap as possible but still a good instrument). If I can afford a bit more then the Sandberg basses look great but that’s stretching things too far for now.[/size][/font] [font=Verdana][size=3] Thanks all [/size][/font]

    Having played all versions and previously owned a mk2 5 string and currently two mk3 4 strings, I find mk3 to be the best ergonomically, weight and balance wise (for me personally). I do love the iconic look of the mk1 though.

    I asked a luthier this very same question and he said that it would be possible but it would be much cheaper and easier to just buy a J neck and put it on a P body.

    Finest Quality German style Double Bass Bow Made by Thomas Acker, bought new from Stefan Krattenmacher in 2008. Paid/Valued at $3000 Euro - about £2500, comes with a valuation certificate. The same bow today would cost nearer £2750, if not more. Silver mounted ebony frog and silver screw. Finest quality Pernambuco stick. Salt and Pepper hair. 76cm long, hair length is 55cm, weight is 141g. Very responsive and articulate, good strong and clear sound and fits well in the hand. Well suited to orchestra, chamber music and solo playing. This is an extremely good bow for a serious player - professional, advanced student or keen amateur, hence the asking price of £2000.
