1.
Why do people use compression? Is it really necessary? I would look into buying one if I could see the point in getting it for live use.....I can see why studios use them, obviously, but live?
It all depends on what sound you want for each song. IIRC Billy Sheehan uses a lot compression and raves about his twin Ashly Audio SC 50 Compressors (which I think are out of production?) Hamster
  2.
iv gt a interview in bass guitar magazine somwhere ill try n find it...all i can remeber is he takes all his control knobs off his pbass and controls it all via a volume pedal and leaves the tone full.
I think it was in Bass Guitar, he wires his pickups straight to the volume pedal, bypassing the tone controls on the bass. IIRC the volume pedal is the only pedal he uses, with any fuzz/distortion coming from cranking up the Ampeg amp. Hamster
  3. I have an Audere fitted to my Lakland - a 3ZB preamp - it's really good. It really brings out the tone of the bass without adding noise or colouration. Let us know how you get on with the JZ model. Hamster
  4.
That's the bass I learned to play on. Or the bass I used when I first started to play
My first bass was also a Westone - a IIA IIRC. Hamster

  7. I've been asked to do some quick and easy recording of various singer's vocals. It doesn't have to be studio quality, just a good level, and I think it would be easiest taking the signal straight off the mixing desk. I'm thinking of something like a Roland Edirol R-09 as it's quick, easy and pocket-size portable. Any thought's / experience? Ta Hamster
The wound that we bass players call "synth" is basically a blend of Octaver, Fuzz and Envelope Joe.
Thanks Joe. I shall now dymo-tape my synth pedal as a "Fuzztaverlope" to impress people Hamster
  13. +1 for the Line 6 Studio 110. I had a play with one of these a while ago and thought they were quite good for practice. Hamster
Hi ppls I'm considering a good octave pedle and wondered if u guys have any suggestions? I quite like the EBS Octabass but I'm willing to here what others u might suggest? Thanks Phil
The Digitech Bass Synth Wah is widely regarded as the best octaver effect. Hamster
  17. I've searched around this forum and our previous home and have come up with the following luthiers. They have all at some time been personally recommended by forum members who have had work carried out by them. As this is a living document, if you have any amendments / additions then post the details on the thread and I'll add it to this first post. 18. Ok people; time to make this site bigger and better than it's previous incarnations! This thread is for DIY Spare Parts – whether for your Bass Guitar, Amplifier or Cabinets. I'll split the first post into these three sections. To give you an idea, I'm looking for suppliers of: For Bass guitars - bodies, necks, machine heads, decals, scratchplates, screws, pick ups, bridges, on-board pre-amps, tone/volume control knobs, potentiometers etc - all the stuff that you might not find in your local guitar shop. For amplifiers – valves, knobs, switches, rack mounts, feet, handles, sockets, wiring diagrams, cooing fans, LED's etc. For cabinets (including self-build) – speakers, wood, covering cloth, grill material, handles, feet/wheels, corners, crossovers, plugs, sockets, acoustic foam etc. You contribute to the thread the details - name, telephone, website, range of gear they sell etc, and I'll update the sections in the first post as an easy reference. WELCOME!!
I just want to say a few shouts out first to: Phatmonkey - for being the technical genius behind this forum. If it wasn't for him, you wouldn't be enjoying the slick and secure site we now have. Ped - for dealing with Gerard in a way that I just don't have the patience or skills for. The Moderating team - particularly Slaphappygarry, Dood, Lukeward2004 and Machines for their advice and support. We're lucky to have them onboard.
+1 Thanks from me too guys! Hamster
