1.
A very nice Squier it has to be said. The CV series is finished/built to a higher standard than the Mexican Standard basses of 10 years ago IMO.
Yes, almost £400 is a lot of money But you have to remember, Squier have produced a lot of very different instruments, in different factories around the world And the quality of each model is different These CV series are absolutely brilliant, I kid you not I can well recall being in music shops, when the Japan made Squiers were introduced while customers and staff spoke of them being "Jap Cr@p" .... a hideous, derogatory and incorrect misnoma I don't know how many of those people had admitted to eating their words - but many of these Squiers are now justifiably held in high esteem Yes, you may have been able to buy a Mex built Squier for rather less But again, Mexican Fenders and Squiers have moved on, and are now far better builds than they once were I picked up a CV 60's Precision the other day, and it's honestly brilliant If you haven't tried one yet - you really must The same day, I played a CV Jazz bass, and a USA Jazz, while trying out an amp (I also went straight home & plugged my CV, my Mex Jazz and my USA Jazz thru said amp (after buying it) And I have to say my own CV P bass, and the CV Jazz Squier more than held their own My CV has drawn me back to P basses - it's better than any USA P I've ever played (and I owned a couple) It might be more expensive than previous Squiers, but it's another step up in quality PS. Love the block inlays on that P neck
2.
You haven't played my Ric. At every Cardiff bass bash the "I don't like Rics" have had a go and changed their minds. There are great examples of all marques, just like there are poor ones. Each to his own, and I like playing my own.
I do like Rics, but I've played some that I can't get on with I can however, confirm that Gelfin's Ric is absolutely fantastic! Never played another quite like it And if he were to think of selling it, I'd be there like a shot That bass has the power to convert anyone, I can assure you And yes Gelfin, you're quite right - there are good and bad examples of every model, it seems
3. I've got a couple of Jazz basses, I'm a recent convert, and I now love them Don't know why I didn't swap over to the Jazz sooner I've played several, and the best IMHO is the roadworn series There's a lot of people who don't like the "roadworn" concept and part of me appreciates this However, my roadworn is THE best I've played It's a real keeper I've also got a USA Jazz, which I might now sell But I'll not part with my roadworn I've played a couple of Squiers, CV and VM and they've all been good Great instruments. Just try as many as you can, and don't worry about the decal on the headstock If it's right for you, go for it Good luck with your search, and enjoy it Marc EDIT: I've also got an indonesian made PJ bass, and a new Classic Vibe P, built in China And the quality of both these basses is amazing!
4. I've just got myself a Classic Vibe 60's P, in Fiesta red It's absolutely awesome. Love the tone of it, and the dark tint thick lacquer looks great and the colour is absolutely gorgeous, with a flawless finish I wouldn't know it's not an alder body without direct comparison, and maybe not even then This bass is definitely lighter than my old USA Fender P, but a tad heavier than my MIA Squier PJ But well done Squier! I love mine to bits already
5.
has there been a thread before discussing how comes there is such a fundamental and distinct difference in tone between the two when they are so similar in shape?
I'm sure there has been - and fairly sure I've read on previously It seems an eternal point of discussion, which as someone already mentioned here is testimony to Leo Fender, and his designs.... A big part of the tonal difference must also come from the pickups, and electrics anyway also, the neck will play a part too.....
6. Re the above posts, I can honestly say, I had an Ibanez SR 500 - which is a 4 string What a quality instrument that was, great build, great sound - massive value for money The only thing I outgrew with it, was that I like a slightly wider neck There are often a few 505's knocking around, second-hand and I've no reason to believe they would be anything other than great instruments .... and those Bartolini electrics & pickups sound amazing! Just picked up a Squier Candy Apple Red V bass It is heavy. But from my point of view, the lovely wide neck does allow me to really get my fingers in between the strings (a problem I've found with 5 string basses) Of course, I still can't get my head around 5 strings yet ... but i got it to at least have a dabble .... and it was mint, and cheap! Let us know how you get on

8. I have a Squier P bass, with 2 pickups One split pickup in the usual neck position, and one striaght pickup in the bridge position (like a Jazz) And I must say, this bass has a great sound Possibly the best passive sounding bass I've owned It can sound just like a P bass, or it can sound a lot like a J bass But it has a nice tone of its' own too I also have a couple of Jazzes, and I really do like the sound of both of them They do sound very Fender-like, and I find I can vary the sound and tone quite a lot However, I'd like to experiment with some pickups, and get a more "beefy" sound so if anyone here has some suggestions for some pickups which are easy / straight swaps - please let me know Cheers Marc
9. For sale. /[s]or trade for Fender Jazz (see description)[/s] Price [s]£750,[/s] Price drop - Now [s]£700[/s] without the Stagg Hardcase [s]Now £675 - Sale[/s] EDIT: Now for sale only cash reduction for £625 as I have my eye on something else lol [s]Trade value approx £700, with cash adjustment going either way (as appropriate)[/s] I'm reluctant to sell this EB MM Stingray. It's a fab bass, probably the best sounding, best quality bass I've ever had. But I've moved entirely towards Fender Jazz basses for the neck profile, so this aint getting played. In a rather unusual Trans red colour. - they all seemed to be in black, white, or wood finish when I was looking. This is the only red one I came across, and it's beautiful. If you see it, you'll want it! Date from Musicman - October 1998 It's not mint, but it is In great condition, with one small chip on the edge, and a few minor scratches & dings - none really noticeable (I've tried to show these in the last few pics) Also, I'd really prefer not to post this bass. I hate sending quality instruments through the post I'm in Cardiff - I could travel or arrange to meet for trade... Cheers PS. I'm hating putting this stunning bass up for sale But it's not getting the playing it so richly deserves EDIT: I'm now open to trade for a Fender Jazz (pref MIA) I've got GAS for a neck with block inlays - pref maple fretboard
10. BUMP, and a price drop to £900 I really could do with the space (and I've bought another bass guitar) so I could do with selling this DB I honestly can't believe it hasn't gone already - it's a beautiful instrument Now it's 100 quid cheaper than it was a few years back, and with a free case C'mon BC'ers - I don't want to sell this via fleabay
11. Argh! I've got GAS for one of these now - and too many basses already What am I to do? lol
12.
It could be to do with our nature or personality. I was once in a band where we all played sunday football together, our drummer was the keeper, I played as either centre half or defensive midfielder, lead guitarist was our playmaker/attacking midfielder and singer was our main striker. Make of that what you will.
I think this is a great story / analogy too love it! But what do you reckon your transfer fee would be? EDIT: And which of you tackled hardest, and which of you feigned injury, or could be seen rolling around the floor? I avoided the obvious, trite question as to who scored most lol
13. I do like the colour and general look of this bass - lovely
14. I can't get those links to work Can you check them? Would be nice to see some pics before buying Also, postage would be a necessity for me too
15. I'm not sure I was "born" to be a bassist I'm not particularly gifted, it takes me a while to learn some songs (while some come more easily) I don't read music (do a bit of Tab) but I like to play by ear, and I do like the challenge of learning some songs, or some nice sounding bass lines But, as others have said, it's the instrument I feel most drawn towards or have an affinity to.... I started out trying my hand at guitar (an awful old Jedson - who remembers those) after playing bass a short while, I had a few guitar lessons, but always felt the strings were a bit small & fiddly, and felt I couldn't get "in there" and play as well or with the dexterity I wanted - so I never felt I "connected" with guitar quite the same way I occasionally play a bit of Mandolin (again, tiny strings & spacing though!) - but I love the sound of it and I've got a Cahon, and a few small drums I occasionally hit But nothing else quite feels like a Bass to me I took a break of over 20 years from playing and I only returned when my son had a Squier P bought for him one year for Xmas He wanted to learn some Iron Maiden bass lines and didn't know where to start I got out a few old LP's (on vinyl) - which shocked him - he didn't think Dad was cool enough to like his sort of music I struggled to remember, or even play the basis of some of Steve Harris's basslines But the bug had started to bite again, and I was well & truly bitten Now I'm sorry I had such a long "bass holiday" But I'm loving it even more Marc
16. Yes, I'm sure it is But I think I might be put off, or at least mildly distracted I do like the whole width of the strap to sit snug on my shoulder - it's probably an OCD thing mind you Apologies (in that I haven't read every post) but what are you charging for these straps? I'd be interested anyway - particularly in a slightly narrower version
17. I'm considering getting a 5 string myself - having always played 4 strings I never really got on with 5 ers before, but now, I'm getting GAS for one I usually find the strings are a bit close together at the bridge end, for me to really get my fingers in between, and really dig in there.... I've played a couple, but so far the Squier 5 string P bass has been the best, in terms of neck width & string spacing... Also, the latest Squiers seem good value for money, IMHO Haven't yet played a 6 string - don't think I could cope with that lol I'd be interested to hear what you go for, and how good the Squier 6 strings are (And any more info / thoughts on the 5 String P's & J's would be good too) Let us know what you discover Marc
18. That's a small neck twist? Yikes Still, at least you've now got a cheap project I'm sure there are luthiers out there who would be able to sort this For 50 quid, I'd have had it - even if for just a bit of a learning project..... Let us know how you get on with straightening that neck and good luck
19. Apologies for joining in this discussion rather on the late side I hadn't seen the thread before Obviously, without actually trying the strap out, it's difficult to comment on comfort etc But it does look a tad on the wide side for my taste... I might get paranoid about slippage (even if none actually happens) with that much of the strap overhanging, or poking slightly upwards..... The important things for me, as others have said, are; - your strap design does have suede backing - to prevent slippage - the leather is soft (I tried a few with firmer leather, and the softest won my vote recently - it just felt more comfortable, and wasn't the most expensive in the shop - by some way) - no added pads - these can be prone to slippage in my experience... I've used other materials in previous years, but some of the basses I own now are heavier and my shoulder seems to be more "sensitive" or easily tires, after prolonged playing I find I can't use nylon type straps on some guitars and am currently shopping for another strap or 2 I bought one a few months back, because it was the softest, most comfortable in the shop I cut the shop label off it, and I'm now looking for another - but can't find one! Good luck with your sales etc
20. Wow - I can't believe this is still here It's an awesome colour, in lovely nick, and a steal at that price! Unfortunately, I can't buy it at the moment I've got too many basses myself..... But GLWTS type bump C'mon BC'ers - this is a bargain for a quality instrument EDIT: I bought my Stingray a little while back and looked at this If it had been that price back then, I'd have gone for it, and not the one I went for (and mine is a lovely colour too!)
21. I have a MIM Jazz - a roadworn series model I've also got a USA Jazz, and have owned 2 vintage USA Fender basses in the past.... There's a lot of discussion on "classic" Fenders, and a lot of people who don't like the "Roadworn" concept But I bought the Roadworn Jazz because it is simply stunning I had played a couple of dodgy MIM's before, (EDIT and a couple of really good ones) but the neck on my MIM is just superb I've never played a bass guitar that feels quite as comfortable, or that I just wanted to pick up & play quite so much And it sounds superb too! Don't worry about which factory made it If it feels & sounds great - just enjoy it, and be glad you've found one you like so much.... I've heard tales of bassists flogging their instruments, cos it said "squier" on the headstock, then regretting it, and realising they just flogged a great instrument for less than its' real worth To be honest, my USA Jazz is lovely, But I wouldn't swap 2 of them for my MIM Jazz EDIT: Sometimes you just "know" when a bass is right for you For me, my roadworn Jazz is the best I've ever played I'll not be selling this one..... ever
22. I bought my stunning David Gage Bass from Greg Cordez (think his username is gcordez on here) Greg is a great guy to deal with and a fab DB'er. He even gave me a few quick pointers I'm sure he'd be a superb tutor, and if I lived a little closer (+ didn't have the Severn Bridge Toll!) I'd have absolutely no hesitation in booking a few lessons with him Even if you get on well with another tutor - give Greg a try too
23. This beautiful bass should surely have sold for this price Honestly, It's lovely - I'm only selling cos I now have a David Gage bass and can't really justify the space for keeping 2 beautiful DB's No takers?
