1.
This may indeed sound very stupid, but it has never stopped me before. Is there a calculation for working out how loud your rig needs to be. eg style of music x venue X punters = Watts. Again i apologise for daft questions , but is is better to buy for example an ampeg head that is 450w or a lesser head that is 900w. Does the quality of build come into it?
The OP sounds like you are asking what you need without the support of a PA. If playing with a full band (in my case 2 guitarists, loud drummer and myself) i'd say a minimum of 500w. Though when I used that I was still often struggling a bit, but like you we rarely have full PA support- its normally just for the vocals. So.. I went for a Hartke LH1000 this time (I think its actually something like 750/800w though cos I play it bridged through a Big One which is 8 ohms). Only now do I feel that i have enough power with an efficient enough speaker to provide the volume and lows i need for most gigs i'll play. When/if it comes to the time i'll need more volume i'll probably get another Big One and run them parallel in a stack. Cant wait! ... maybe i'll do that anyway...
 2.
If your budget is heading up to that region I know quite a few bassists on here sing the praises of the LH500 with a certain lightweight 15" cab... Alex P.S. See signature below!
I am one of those very people, although i've gone for the higher models (LH1000 and Barefaced Big One). You can't go wrong with the LH500 and a compact.
 3. If you're after Peavey hows about my TNT combo I have for sale here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=27227
 4.
could genuinely interfere with audience breathing at about 15-20 feet (especially if it was sat on a 3-4 foot high stage).
The Nazis thought this was a good idea and developed some weapons called Sound Cannons. "The cannon consisted of large parabaloid reflectors, the final version of which had a diameter over 3m. The "dishes" were connected to a chamber composed of several sub-units firing tubes. The function of these tubes was to allow an admixture of methane and oxygen into the combustion chamber, where the two gases were ignited in a cyclical, continuous explosion. The length of the firing chamber itself was exactly a quarter of the wavelength of the sound waves produced by the on-going explosions. Each explosion initiated the next by producing a reflected, high-intensity shockwave, and so creating a very high amplitude sound beam. This high and strong note of unbearable intensity was emitted at pressures in excess of 1,000 milibars about 50m away. This level of pressure is above the limits that man can endure. At such a range, half a minute of exposure would be enough to be lethal. At longer ranges (about 229m), the effect would be excruciating and a soldier would be incapacitated for some considerable time afterwards." 5. Just curious as to what is the biggest speaker you can get for bass? I've heard of 18"s but are there bigger ones? Also what would it be like having say 1x20" in a cab or even bigger 1x25", assuming it was all designed well and with good components? Would it be worth it? Why don't people use really big speakers more? Do speakers become 'weaker' as in more prone to damage when they get larger? As I say, i'm just curious and bored in work. Chris.
 6.
save up the £99 more and get an Hartke LH500
+1 Though it will depend on what he needs it for - if its just practice he could get away with less power and get a decent combo. If playing gigs with a band though, i'd go for the LH500. Does he already have a cab or is that required from the same budget?
 7.
Big One has deeper lows, more aggressive mids and much more treble. Vintage is rounder and sweeter sounding, Big One has more grrrr and thunder. Alex
hmmm, interesting....(said with a pondering look while stroking my beard in a contemplating manner - theres no smiley for that)
 8. hmmm, what difference in sound is there between a Big One and a Vintage?......
 9. You can't go wrong with a small combo really as its only for home practice, you don't need loads of volume. Only problem is theres loads of choice. I use a Marshall B65 1x12 that I bought about 8 or 9 years ago, sounds pretty nice and you can pick them up mega cheap of ebay!
 10.
Hmm, sounds expensive!
Do you have a budget? It'd be easier to recommend stuff with your max price in mind.
 11.
Better to have the power and not need it than to need it and not have it.
+1 I got fed up of running out of juice hence the 1000w. I don't need that much for most things I do but when I do need it I have it available.
 12.
Thanks Chris. I'm not sure if i need something that loud right now. Many thanks for the info tho. Cheers Matt
I've just done a quick search on prices: LH500 £283, Little Giant 350w £230, Superfly 500w £160 If you are gonna be playing in a band and using one 8 ohm cab i'd suggest using at least a 500w head. Getting something like the LH500 is gonna mean you won't have to upgrade for a while once you start gigging, maybe just add another cab to get its full power. Obviously the best thing you can do is try a load of amps out with your cab when you get it and go for the sound you like best. Unfortunately if Reverb Bristol is your nearest store it has a crap selection of bass gear.
 13. The Hartke LH range are very good and you can pick them up very cheap. You'd be fine getting the LH500 which I think is louder than most 500w amps. Also it has a very simple but very effective eq section which some people like me prefer.

 15. I tested my gear tonight its the cab not the head. The mid driver still works but the 15" driver doesnt seem to work at all.
 16.
Silly I know but have you checked your leads and Battery (if active).
Yeah at the gig I checked all leads direct into the head and I also tried the previous bands bass again incase it was my battery. Luckily there was a sh*tty little cab there so I used a small pa mixer into that instead so I still got to play. Wasn't quite in the best mood for it anymore tho. Its a good job i haven't sold my warwick rig yet!
 17.
P.S. If you've managed to blow the woofer I'll give you a prize! Alex
Ha ha! I can't imagine it would have blown, I haven't used it with the LH1000 louder than 5/6 so it shouldn't have been put to its limits!
 18. I took my LH1000 and Barefaced Big One to a gig the other day and was sharing it with the other bassists to save set-up time. First 2 bands went on - no problems, sounded really nice actually. They didn't change the settings or anything just turned it up slightly. They were only playing 25 min sets too so it wasn't like it was on for ages! Then I go on to set up and it doesnt't work properly anymore! Its really weird it still made a sound but it was really quiet and only a really horrible high mid-trebly sort twangy noise - no lows whatsover! Anyone know what the problem might be and what would cause this? Or could it be a problem with the cab, Alex would be able to answer this - If the driver on the 15" broke for some reason and only the mid driver was working, because of the awesome crossover no lows would come through? I haven't had a chance to test it again yet but will be tonight. I'm gonna try a number of different set ups to try and determine where the fault lies: LH1000 - Big One, LH1000 - warwick 4x10, warwick head - Big One.
 19. Its well worth getting one of these. I got mine from the same place, they'll have more soon so keep an eye out for them!
 20. My 411 pro came with castors so they would probably fit yours too. Go to the warwick website and ask for some replacement castors, they provide a very good service and you might get them for free! 21.
I love the 2nd song!
Cool thanks, I think when it changes around 3 minutes in its awesome right to the end, but I would think that.
 22. No problems setting the volume with my LH1000, I've used it for practice, gigging and recording. Its easy.
 23.
I have used many many combos, but I want to take my first step into real amps. I am looking for something cheap but powerful. I play mainly metal or hard rock, but looking to branch out into whatever makes me a better bassist- but I want an amp that can give me a decent overdriven tone as well as a good clean one. Also, I currently use a POD into a PA speaker, could I buy a head and use it with the speaker, or vice versa with the POD? Thanks for your help,
Your best bet is to look at the 'For Sale' section - there are alot of bargains to be had there! Not entirely sure about the POD - PA speaker, though I would suggest a proper bass cab would be best as it will be better at handling the lows.
