1992 Fender American Vintage 62 Reissue Jazz Full Renovation
vinorange replied to vinorange's topic in Build Diaries
With the headstock edges back to the wood, they were sanding sealed with nitro sanding sealer and I managed to find out that the neck colour is a special honey tint. Dartfords guitar do a really good match for the headstock / neck and as the gloss on the neck has already been knocked back using 0000 grade wire wool it looked like I could blend in the honey tint. Here's the lacquer; https://dartfords.com/products/dartfords-honey-nitrocellulose-guitar-neck-lacquer-230ml-tin?_pos=4&_psq=honey&_ss=e&_v=1.0 I set about refinishing the headstock edges and feathering in the finish with the existing finish. I left it to dry and then flatted the finish but this time with scratch free sanding paper by Kovax call Tolecut 1500 pink. It's a miracle product as the sanding is as it says, scratch free. No polishing at this point as it would react with the next stage. -
1992 Fender American Vintage 62 Reissue Jazz Full Renovation

So I took the bass to bits and took some extra photos for record. As I wasn't intending posting the update on here I didn't take photos of every step but a description hopefully will suffice; The body was stripped back to the nitro wood sealer. All paint was sanded back using 400 / 800 wet and dry. Any break through to the wood was sealed with nitrocellulose wood sealer, left to dry and flatted with 800 wet and dry ready for priming. Primer was Northwest Guitars nitrocellulose primer and is excellent. Only when you get a coat of primer on can you lay a critical eye over the body. Primer was flatted back and any areas requiring minor filling were filled with epoxy wood filler to avoid shrinkage. In this case the dings were tiny and hardly needed anything. The strap button holes had been enlarged over the years so needed some epoxy wood filler in to close up the holes a touch prior to cracking on. So body prepared, repairs done and to get it ready for top coat I finished off the priming with one can of nitro primer. Left to dry for 1 day and then flatted with 800 / 1200 wet and dry ready for top coats. The headstock was a challenge as the edges were tatty. They needed to be 100% square to take a headstock refinish otherwise the finish bleeds into the edge chips so I set about sanding back the face with 400 wet n dry and the edges similarly with a sanding block to get the edges to as near flat / 90 degrees as poss. The decal itself was from Rob at www.guitardecals.co.uk. To be sure I sent the pic below to make sure it was 100% reproduction. -
Well, I've been persuaded to add pics of a renovation I carried out on a recently acquired 1992 Fender Jazz 62 reissue stacked knob rarity. So my jazz started out life looking a little worn - as is the way with a nitro finished 1992 bass that has been gigged a fair amount. The finish had matured to a cream finish and had extensive chips and finish wear. Luckily there weren't really any deep gouges although the finish had worn to the wood sealer on the back. The headstock decal outline was clearly visible and had started to look worn. Screws were rusted, earth strip to bridge corroded, pickup poles rusty. Pickup covers and pickguard All the hardware and electronics were original and worked fine so, apart from a polish, nothing required there. Pickup covers and pickguard original but, politely, a bit worn in. Headstock edges were generally dinged commensurate with age and engagement with adjacent drummers equipment!! With all the above I decided on a full body strip, prep, prime and refinish in period correct Olympic white nitrocellulose and a matching headstock face refinish.

Up for sale as a result of a build that I've then split for parts are the fully wired pickups, Preamp and control plates from a 2019 Troy Sanders Jaguar. The specs are below. Fully working, sounded great in my project build but the glory is in the build and ultimately I split it for parts.... IMHO it's better than the Jap Jag set up because it has pickups pan and boost/ cut on the preamp. Bridge Pickup: Custom Noiseless™ Single-Coil Jazz Middle Pickup: American Standard Alnico V Split Single-Coil Precision Controls Lower Control Plate: Master Volume, Pan Pot. Upper Control Plate: Active/Passive Slide Switch, Treble Boost/Cut Thumb Wheel, Bass Boost/Cut Thumb Wheel Switching Pan Pot Configuration SS Special Electronics 18-Volt Active Preamp with Active Bass and Treble Thumb-Wheel Controls and Active/Passive Slide Switch

Up for sale is my Genz Benz Neo NX2 212T 600 watt 4 ohm single cab solution. Brilliant cab, with tweeter, wonderful full sound from a 2x12 lightweight cab. Excellent condition and sounds wonderful. Only recently acquired but I've decided to go entirely digital so no more amps and cabs for me. Some say these challenge barefaced 212s and I'd agree. I had a BF 212 and I'd say the GB has more depth. Based on the wirral but can deliver, meet up or will ship it. Specs are 600 watt, 4Ω •2 x 12" + tweeter •42hz - 18khz •sensitivity 101db 1w/m •47lb/23kg •1" x 21 1/4 " x 16 1/2"/ 78.8cm x 54cm

Up for sale is my Barefaced Big Baby T in really great condition and sounding wonderful. It's a 1x12 with 1x6.5 and tweeter running at 8 ohms and 450 watts. Its a great lightweight punchy cab with all the mid and high punch and clarity you'd expect from a q2 with 6.5 and tweeter. Bought off BC recently but I've decided to go completely digital so no need for amps or cabs for me. Tech21 VT Bass and Genz Benz neo 212 up for sale too as a result of going all kemper.... Based on the Wirral so can deliver, meet up or will send insured. It`s in great condition, just a few tiny little marks in the tolex on rhe lower front edge. It has a 12 inch woofer for the lows and a 6.5 inch mid range speaker for the highs with crossover. It will run happily at 450 watts cab at 8 ohms but weighs just 16kg. Here is a copy of the BF spec sheet. It was the predecessor of the Big Baby 2. https://barefacedbass.com/product-range/big-baby.htm More pics to follow.....

Up for sale is my Tech21 VT500 amp. Its a great bit of kit if you want to emulate an Ampeg SVT but want to carry a 3kg amp instead of a 40kg amp. I've found it nails the driven sound brilliantly and I've had it for ages, from new but haven't gigged it. Only selling as I've gone and bought a Kemper. Perfect condition and working order. Based on the wirral. Can meet up or will post anywhere. Here's what Tech21 say; The VT Bass 500 is a 500-Watt bass amp head, with an all-analog SansAmp™ pre-amp and Class D power amp. It is formulated with the same proprietary technology as our SansAmp Character Series VT Bass DI pedal. The unique Character control sweeps through decades of some of the most distinctive bass amp tones on the planet. Drive adjusts the overall amount of gain and overdrive, similar to when the output of a tube amp is being pushed. A Blend control allows you to blend the direct instrument signal with the SansAmp Tube Amplifier Emulation circuitry. The Bite switch activates a presence boost, which tightens up the sound when you are in distorted settings. It also adds definition to your notes when playing in cleaner settings. FEATURES • 500 Watts RMS @ 4 Ohms / 300 Watts RMS @ 8 Ohms • All-analog SansAmp Pre-Amp • Class D power amp • Continuously-variable Character control • Drive control for gain • Blend control to mix in direct signal • Bite switch for a presence boost • Active tone controls, cut or boost 18dB, with switchable mid frequency (500Hz-1kHz) • Balanced XLR direct output with -20dB pad and ground lift switch • Effect Loop with bypass switch to double as a mute • -12dB input pad • Dedicated headphone output • Worldwide power supply • Thermal speed control fan • Neutrik Speakon® outputs • Measures: 10.5”w x 2.75”h x 8.5”d • Weight: 6.5 lbs.

Bought a barefaced 12 / 6 cab off Gerry and it's fantastic. The packing was astonishing and the only slightly disappointing thing was that the cab was 3" smaller than the package that arrived! That shows how well packed it was! Truly fantastic so thanks Gerry.

Up for sale is my near mint Barefaced super 12 2 x 12" bass cab. There are no marks on the tolex apart from 1 or 2 minor marks on the bottom of the cab. I've had it 2 years and not gigged it and I'd guess it hasn't seen much action as it's in great condition and sounds very tight still - in fact it sounds wonderful but I'm not gigging any time soon so its overkill for my needs. It is 4 ohms, is a one cab solution and goes up to a huge 1000 watts. Dimensions are 76cm x 48cm x 34cm and it weighs at a very manoeuvrable 18kg. It has wheels for easy transportation. It also has a luxury padded cover with cable store and a vinyl cover with it. Here is a link to the Barefaced website https://barefacedbass.com/product-range/super-twelve.htm IT has been superseded by the Super Twin. I'm on the wirral but it can be shipped for not a lot due to it's svelte nature or I'll drive within 50 miles or so to meet up. More pics to follow....

Just traded my 4004 for a vintage P bass and it was just what I was after. As ever, Ash is a gent to deal with. Hope the Ric is a keeper.

You could also build up the scuff with nitro lacquer first and then use the same method. You'd just have to leave the lacquer to set for a couple of days before touching it.
-
I use kovax 1500 grit pink scratchless sanding paper. It is truly amazing stuff, no need for wet & dry, just use with the curve of the body until ylscuff starts to disappear (youll start to sand the adjacent lacquer and thats what you want). Don't go too far but you should have plenty of clear coat layers on there. Once it's flatted out then use Meguires cut and polish. When I went on a bass maintenance course with the great Jon Shuker he showed me that exact technique. Both kovax paper and Meguires are miles easier to use than normal wet and dry / T cut. Good luck.

Rickenbacker 4001 dull sounding open E
vinorange replied to vinorange's topic in Repairs and Technical
It’s particularly noticeable on the open E. With fresh strings the A, D and G are nice and zingy and then the open E is lifeless. I’d say that it sounds dull acoustically as well as amplified which may point to the nut. Anybody used a brass nut on a Rick? Or would a good bone nut suffice? Thanks
