Cheers guys, been fiddling about with it for the past hour or so, recording direct and really listening. It's definitely a gain issue, i think I underestimated just how hot the 18v Aguilar is. It's INSANE. So basically, backing off the gain (more than i thought i'd have to) has really improved the sound. Was thinking a compressor would do the trick as well chiliwailer. Thanks for the input!
Absolutely, and with the graphite neck it's doubly insane!!!! Enjoy!

(scratchy )Dimarzio USA 250k PUSH PULL
Chiliwailer replied to zvirus's topic in Repairs and Technical
Hi, I have found very simple solution - returned the pot and do not need to worry any more... Very disappointed, will avoid any push pull pots in the future especially branded ones.
Last time I put a push pull into my Jazz it killed the tone. Anyone know of one that doesn't do that? -
Hello mate. I found on mine that I have to use a Compressor all the time. The 18v pre amp is seriously powerful and very spikey. When using a compressor you can have a regular pickup height, rather than lowering it and compromising on the tone. I tried an Aguilar compressor but strangely enough, the Aguilar preamp was too much for it so I traded it for a MXR and that works great, really suits the bass nicely. Not only is it a problem solved, but I reckon a compressor is always good anyway for big tones, IMO.
No, 1963 pickups were not dated at all. They should have black bobbins and maroon coloured coil wires. Solderings should be untouched. The black covers should have a more satin surface instead of a glossy one. GLWTS
Just to add that the tops of the pole pieces should be beveled. Pickups wire colour can vary in some rare instances, and a rewind wouldn't be uncommon either. The pickups wires looks pretty old and spot on according to the pics of the pots. Edit: where's my manners... Looks like a lovely bass, GLWTS!
Thank you mate! What I'm really after is something trad like an old-style tweed case but airline proof.
Perhaps buy the tweed from all parts and get a furniture maker to attach it? Tweed does damage easy though. Good luck. -
Most unusual 'First New Bass' story? Here's mine...what's yours?
Chiliwailer replied to Mick The Hat's topic in Bass Guitars
Not really unusual but... 14 years old and I got a Rockwood by Hohner LX100B, I couldn't stand Precisons back then, as most beginners bass were P Basses, and wanted a bass that looked good for metal, that one fitted the bill. Thing is, the action was super high, little did I know that's why I was having a hard time playing it. 5 months later and I had a Saturday job in Andys in Denmark Street, they quickly trained me how to set up guitars and then I realised the Rockwood could be sorted so I set up, much better. I sold it a while later for an Aria Integra, and then a year later it came back into Andys for sale. Was I sentimental enough to buy it back? Hell no, that bass was better off left behind. -
won't do too much harm?
Oh yeah, what about GAS leaks?
-
Good investment, no way. Great idea, hell yeah! Worth a phone call to Coda Music in Stevenage, they'll price it up.
-
I like the randomness of the zinicote, very organic. Both good choices.
Guess I'll have to go custom, but where from? Thanks in advance for for any help.
Check out Freestyle cases, they make bespoke ones -
Upgrading from MM Stingray SUB USA to full MM 2EQ, is it worth it?
Chiliwailer replied to Andytre's topic in Bass Guitars
Urghhhh... Massive Stingray GAS now, been too long since I had a maple neck one. Given that they are so cheap second hand, this could be bad for my budgeting.... -
That is exactly what I'm after at the moment. A white Ray 4H with a maple board preferably with a neck similar to this Sterling. Do you think I can find one anywhere? Having said that, this Sterling looks simply gorgeous, I've never played one though. What significant differences are there?
There is a difference in the pickup Warren, these are ceramic rather than the alnico used in stingrays. They sound different, but still great of course. Just don't expect a stingray tone.

Upgrading from MM Stingray SUB USA to full MM 2EQ, is it worth it?
Chiliwailer replied to Andytre's topic in Bass Guitars
cheers for the info guys, the contours would be a bonus i played with a friends Ray5 and it did feel good even though im not really used to 5 string basses. i also don't know if i would be able to part with SUB if i bought a new one either! haha
Easily sorted, buy a Stingray with a maple fingerboard, my fave anyway, and then you have two with tonal differences...GAS justification sorted! Happy saving. -
Upgrading from MM Stingray SUB USA to full MM 2EQ, is it worth it?
Chiliwailer replied to Andytre's topic in Bass Guitars
I've had two of both, I like the SUB for value for money but I prefered the contours, woods used and feel of the regular Stingray. I never liked Basswood bodies on Fenders, but the Bongo made me rethink that opinion on Music Man which is why I gave my second SUB a try. If your SUB is doing it for you, your quids in, they are lovely basses. Edit: I'm with Pete, I love the 2 band eq myself. Though the bass knob often needs toning down at times to adapt to situations. The 3 band have more zing I reckon, great if you want more mids and attack perhaps. -
How about a 1975 Ibanez? They did some great copies, Gibson ones look fun... From the 1975 catalogue http://s93105080.onlinehome.us/Ibanez-Catalogs/

Can't believe you charge 'so little' to post For Sale ads
Chiliwailer replied to DavidMcKay's topic in General Discussion
You paid your money, plug away! I always use a link in my signature to the listing, you can do that in the edit section of your profile. Good luck with the sale, I was dubious about the pricing when I joined BC, experience has taught me how wrong I was, BC has been extremely kind to me, and others, with sales. -
Looks like Modulus are making a comeback.
Chiliwailer replied to ambient's topic in General Discussion
My friend recently bought some 2014 Modulus through Planet Bass. They were the 2nd and 3rd to be made this year. They currently have a blue/black burst and a sparkle sunburst Funk Unlimited just about to be assembled. Amazing basses, so glad they are back in business. -
How strange! Wish I had the money to just get the 66! It was phenomenal! Best bass I've ever played! Hands down! I've played one of the AVRI and found the finish poor, and the tone way too middy and clanky, not the smooth articulation I expect from a 60s era P bass!
Yeah, it really was a good one. You're right about the AVRI, they are good basses but don't have the real vintage vibe. Nothing can replace a vintage sound , mostly as the pickup magnets are older. But the CS basses do a blooming good job.
Not sure its the same one? The one I played was in No Tom Guitars in Denmark Street and was up for £5995! Played superb! What are people's experiences of the AVRI P's?
Yeah, same one I knew anyway but also checked the serial number! I was pleased to see it there, though the price was a bit keen. Great shop No Tom though. The AVRI's are quite nice, better than the USA std in my opinion but still not as good as CS. The new prices of the AVRI are the same as 2nd hand Custom Shops (er, check the link in my signature )
This isn't really the place for discussing the merits of Limelight, but I don't think it's right to compare the two - they're completely different ends of the market.
Nice one, Limelight sure are good for the price point, but is a tricky comparison along side a CS bass.
