Well... I watched a live Police set on Saturday night on the t00bz and was sufficiently motivated by it to start learning some of the back catalogue. Just got Message In A Bottle nailed. Probably have a go at So Lonely tomorrow.

I've ordered 105, 85, 65, 45, 35 and 25 from Status. I'm now preparing to channel my inner Paco de Lucia.... my stagename will be Paco de Lunacy... 😬

Yes, it was the B and top E that concerned me... what gauges can I get away with? Status do custom sets - I could get 105, 85, 65, 45 as normal... then maybe 30 and 20 for B and top E? That was my thinking, but I was unsure if I was about to step into 'rookie error' territory..... 😶

Hi, I'm looking to restring my Yamaha JM6 so that I can tune it from E to E, the reason being that I want to bring some classical guitar-ish playing to my band's music, and use the same shapes as I would on a guitar, but in the lower register of the bass guitar. I usually have 105 gauge low E string, but I don't mind going bigger if it helps get me the right spread of gauges to make this happen. So... I thought I'd ask the Basschat hivemind if anyone had done similar, or to ask what gauges people think would be appropriate for this sort of E to E tuning? Any advice gratefully received! Rob 🙂

If you want good music, you'll have to go looking for it. It sure won't be presented to you through standard media. But the good news is we now have YouTube etc. Live music seems to be off the menu for the foreseeable future, but when it does return I'd like to think that people will value it more. Either that, or venues will realise that juke boxes are both more popular and more cost effective.... time will tell...

No. In the early 80s it was all about listening to Holst or learning Gilbert and Sullivan songs. That said, I didn't expect any different. I learned classical guitar outside of school, which I enjoyed, and when I was 19 some mates asked me to learn bass because they wanted a finger-style player. The rest is history. Anyway, if there had been Precisions, Strats etc. in school down my way, they would have ended up down at the local car boot within a week....

Yes indeed. Jason was interviewed on that same vid about that topic. I picked up a copy of his album and what quite surprised how grungy it was rather than metal. Good though! 🙂

I love Trujillo's playing, but I can see exactly where you're coming from. One of the lads in work lent me a dvd about Metallica - I didn't know quite the extent of James and Lars' egotism and childishness until I watched it. Kirk Hammett used to get criticised for a number of reasons but, gee whizz, the guy should get a medal for putting up with that pair of idiots. I'm glad Kirk has now got Robert Trujillo to have a decent conversation with, and I'm glad Robert has found a 'home' band inasmuch as he can earn a few quid, get his name out there, and pay the rent for the foreseeable future. I just hope he gets to continue any side projects he might be involved in, such as Infectious Grooves. I prefer his playing in Infectious Grooves, but I totally get why he is in Metallica. Good on him!

No, it was Before The Chop III. I've made a massive list of bands from that one book to check out. Get In The Van is certainly on my list of books to get though! 🙂
