1. Interestingly he gets his rather unusual sound because one of the pickups on his TRB is broken and the output is very low. He likes the sound so much he's never bothered to have it fixed. Great bassist by the way. Already well known in his native country where he's been a top bassist since age 15.
2. To hear him playing an amazing groove piece try and find a tune called 'Theseus in the Rains'. I can't find a link on You tube but it is on CD Baby. It says more about his approach as a bass player. It's a very quirky and impressive groove. http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/manringm
3. You're welcome Gareth, enjoy playing the fretless. Apologies for posting the Marcus clip I'll read the thread properly in future. Good luck with True Geminis if you decide to have a go.
4. One from the great Marcus Miller on his Modulus Quantum Fretless 6 string. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZf9lPi-MNw&feature=related
5. One of my faves featuring the amazing Mark Egan from 1985. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_W-m7UuNP8o
6. Another of my favourite tracks is called 'Take for example this' from a Billy Childs album recorded in the late 80's early 90's. Awesome stuff. check out this video of JJ playing with Lee Ritenour, great groove and a very nice solo around 2.20. I love his bass sound it has a really zingy feel to it. 7. Great player and interesting music, any plaudits will be well deserved.
8. With my jazz and fusion leanings coming firmly to the fore I have to say that I think Jimmy Johnson is one of the outstanding bassists of his time. He has such a lovely touch and tone and seems to play just the right things regardless of whether he is playing with James Taylor or Allan Holdsworth. One of my favourite recordings features Jimmy it's called Arrowhead by Wayne Johnson trio and it is amazing stuff. Check out the title track. Incidentally rather unusually Jimmy plays fretless on a good proportion of the album. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0wJqoiMBMQ
9. Amazing piece of music, beautifully played.
10. Just come across these fellas. Really good stuff. Love the strings on the intro. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=httoxYKuS3g
11. As far as Marcus' tone is concerned I have never had a problem with it. I saw him live during his EBS period and his tone was monstrous. I personally feel that it is pointless for us all to criticise any player's tone in an unaccompanied setting regardless of equipment, technique etc. This doesn't make sense to me as it what the bass sounds like in a band context which is important, surely. I feel that Marcus is definitely one of the more musical purveyors of the slap technique and has been responsible for some truly awe inspiring performances including his recordings of Teen Town and What is Hip. However lket's not forget that he is one of the all time great musicians. He plays many other instruments including bass Clarinet, piano, drums, and double bass very well, as well as being able to read and write music, produce in the studio and conduct orchestras. Have a listen to the following track off Wayne Shorter's High Life CD, and bear in mind this line was sight read from notation provided by Wayne Shorter who wrote the line out note for note. Fantastic!! (p.s try to listen through headphones to get the best effect, his tone is lovely IMHO).
12. Any Stanley Clarke, Level 42, Larry Graham, Flea,Victor Wooten,Alain Caron solo and with Uzeb, Will Lee, Juraj Griglak, Julian Crampton with Incognito, Ed Poole amazing and much under rated UK bassist, and many more. I'm sure I've missed a few and others will come and add to the thread. Good luck.

14. Fantastic band and great musicians.
15. One of my favourite players on this one, Jonathan Maron. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7D8r92ftS8
16. Another amazing Chaka track from the same CD this time featuring the peerless Anthony Jackson. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNArTCG6j2A
17. Another great track from Chaka this time featuring a young Marcus Miller . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJ549k4wKmg
18. Check this out, headphones advised unless your computer speakers are really good. Meshell on bass. She is the living embodiment of groove! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7w6lUYBFDM&feature=related
19.
Sick groove and playing.
Snarky Puppy...great. Michael League is another great bass player. The rhythm section is rather good full stop. On tour in the UK later this year!!
20. Good shout on the Down to the Bone stuff Bubinga; doesn't get much funkier than Mr. Crampton, he is a wonderful bass player.
21. This is an absolute classic IMHO. Hope you enjoy listening. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eugtKbAf3kA
22. I didn't buy the Promethean because of this very reason and the fact that threads like these emerged with quite a few disgruntled users. I bought a PJB Flightcase instead and I am pleased to say it is faultless. May lack a little volume for loud band work but it is a capable combo with a fabulous sound for under £600. I hope you get your issues resolved soon and manage to source a suitable replacement. Best of luck, Mark.
23. This is one of my fave Jimmy Haslip tracks. The solo breaks towards the end (from around 5.22) are outstanding. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmA7q7WdpPc
24.
This is my favourite Jimmy Haslip moment with The Yellowjackets: Russell Ferrante initially plays the bass part while the sax player plays the "head" and Jimmy then takes over playing the bass part seamlessly. I love the way this track swings big time! Had the good fortune to see them in 1991 when they played the Royal Festival Hall in London as part of Capital Radio's Jazz Festival (Lee Ritenour was the other act on the bill with Brian Bromberg on bass - he's no slouch on the instrument either).
Blimey I wasat that gig too. I believe Jimmy played a red Tobias Fretless 5. Lee Ritenour was great as well. I remember it was the first time I came across drummer Gary Novak who was 18 at the time. What a gig, Bromberg played mostly EUB and was awesome throughout. I think Lee was touring in support of the Stolen Moments standards album.
