1. I love the greyish colour single cut. Absolutely stunning instrument.
2. The Fender VB bass was modeled after the original Pensa Jazz bass that Victor played on his debut solo album Bottoms Up. It also had a Flamed Koa top I think. I don't think £1700 is too ridiculous a price, Pensa jazz basses start around $3000 for a basic model.
3. Top guy to deal with, thanks for the pickups Dean. Best regards, Mark.
4. Not someone you would normally associate with funk, but this track and the album it comes from 'Aliens Ate My Buick' is a blinder. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z63IJa3S6io
5. Don't forget his bass is active and he has Barts as well. That will give him a fair amount of tonal variation. I would get as close as you can to the sound and enjoy playing your bass. Chris Ceja is indeed an excellent drummer, I'm sure you'll find a drummer soul mate if you keep searching. Good luck. Cheers, Mark.
6. He also uses light ish nickel wound strings 40-100 which will help the percussive approach. I like his approach. it's hard to develop a unique voice and style in this day and age but he's has managed it. I have each recording he's made, they're all good. I particularly like his rendition of Stairway to Heaven. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJ2NDdRSjHg
7. The guitarist is Dean brown. He always looks rather strange when he plays. Great player though, he's been Marcus' guitarist for a few years. This video must be a few years old anyway as Don Alias is on percussion and he passed away in 2006.
8. Perfectly okay by me. I don't feel any music is so precious that it can't be covered by another artist from a completely different musical genre. It wouldn't bother me if someone did a reggae version to be honest.Miles Davis covering Michael Jackson and Scritti Politti...who'd have thought it! Each to their own.
9. It's not you Grand.....and yes it was bad. Even made the smiley feel strange.
10. This is just woeful. They have done some great records, but you have to be able to cut it live and on this evidence they can't anymore. Eddie's guitar is miles out of tune and the solo is just bizarre. At least DLR can sing in tune.
11. Sorry if this is a re post from earlier in the thread, please check out this track from the amazing Clyde Criner, with Marcus Miller on bass and Rodney Holmes on drums recorded in 1988.
12. One of my favourite players and songs. The main groove is played on a Frudua jazz bass and the solo on Jimmy's trusty Warwick Streamer. The main groove comes in at 1.40, simple but very effective especially when you consider there is no 'real' drummer on the track. 13. Check this out, gobsmackingly good. Rhythm section is insanely good, as is the production and the rest of the musicians. Not a big gospel fan but if this band was playing in my local church I'd be there every Sunday!!! Bass player is Lil Rodney Jones watch out for him! 14.
keep up the funk.... check out the 5 string playing on this.....
Jonathan Maron from Groove Collective I believe, possibly on his 5 string Guild Pilot bass. This album is fantastic. I bought it when it first came out and revisit once a year maybe. Good shout!
15. ,
There are quite a few guys lookin for badass bridges in the wanted section.
Thanks for pointing that out; I have however contacted most of them with no luck. Cheers, Mark.
16. I have just removed this bridge from my Geddy Lee Jazz. It is in good condition and in perfect working order. I would like to ask £65 posted, anywhere in the UK. Please see pics. any questions please drop me a pm. Cheers, Mark.
17. That's a great bass sound IMHO, fairly faithful to the original which was played on a Status series 2. MK always seemed to get a great sound from his Alembics, much better than some of the other combinations of guitars/amps he used over the years.Having seen L42 15 plus times it was quite rare that the bass sounded outstanding. I think the only time it blew me away was in 1982 at Manchester Uni which was a very small venue and the sound was very detailed. I also notice MK seems to be using an Eden rig on this video which may well explain the excellent bass sound.
18. This is a monster groove played by a great groove player called Gary Foote I think. I believe the great Jonathan Maron also played on the CD. Kudos to Bubinga for reminding me about this one.
19. Thanks for the replies. Cheers, Mark.
20. Hi All, Stumbled across this guy Mikael Berglund by complete accident, he has a very interesting duo CD out with a fellow Swede Anders Astrand who plays vibes. The music is not a hard listen as it is nice and melodic. I found it very interesting and refreshingly different. I particularly like the use of an electric bass (1955 P bass) in a genre of music that would more often than not feature an upright. I have checked a few other recordings that he features on and he is a stunning player. Anyone interested please check out his current CD is Vibes and Bass,Seven Thoughts, another worth checking out is Memories and Visions. http://www.mikaelberglund.com Cheers, Mark.
21. Sorry can't be of much help here, I haven't come across them myself. Good luck with your search. Cheers, Mark.
