1. My son has one and I would choose it over my Geddy Lee jazz any time-if he would let me near it!!!!!
2. Rikki Don't Lose That Number-Steely Dan and Joe Jackson's Stepping Out
3. The AG 500 teamed with 2 x GS112s. The amp is simple and easy to get the sounds I want. The speakers are picked up in one hand. Chose the GS as they looked more likely to stand up to the knocks of constant gigging than the cloth fronted alternative (and they have a very convenient spring loaded handle), although the general concensus is that there is a slight difference in tonal value-think I'm too deaf to tell. Drummer and guitarist are particularly impressed with the sound of them.
4. I had this problem last year. All the retailers (well all 5 or 6) are in the South or Midlands. I tried the distributor, but they were most unhelpful and said that their Northern sales representative would look into it-they didn't and never replied. Maybe I shouldn't have asked why they had a Northern sales representative when they clearly had no outlets in the North!! Shame really when you are looking at the thick end of three and a half grand for a rig. The other thing that they stated was that I would get no after sales service if I didn't buy from an authorised dealer-bit of a moot point when it involves an 8 hour round journey to the nearest one. Went with Aguilar in the end (after hearing different set ups at the Northern Bass Bash) and haven't looked back.
5. This restores my faith in human nature.
6. Surgical spirits, on the fingertips, helps to harden the skin with no loss of feel
7. Anyone else use Surgical Spirit? If I've been on holiday, or away from the bass for any period of time, I find that it toughens the skin on my fingertips with no loss of feel. Not for open wounds though!!!!
8. Our female singer copes well with the rockier songs that we do, by male vocalists, however we also do "Barracuda" by Heart, "You Oughta Know" (Flea bass line) and always get a good reaction to "Zombie" (bit of an easy bass line-but powerful). Standing in the Way of Control (The Gossip). "Weak" and "Twisted" by Skunk Anansie (have a listen to the latter-you can have a good play around with effects/wah pedal).
9. I agree with the posts that say get out and look for a band. If you can play root notes and scales and know the songs in advance, audition (make up some "cheat sheets" if necessary. You will be surprised at how you grow, as a musician, playing with others. Good luck
10. A multi tool, door wedges (nothing worse than propping a door open with your foot when you are trying to load in and out), torch (dark stage area and clumsy band members always dropping stuff and an emergency drum key
11. I have and XL2, but if I play it I have to use it exclusively. It's the one in the North East Bass Bash photos. This is because if I dont look at the fretboard, I instinctively put my hand around 3 or 4 frets out from where I play on my other guitars. If I change guitars mid-set I really have to concentrate. Still love it though.
12. Cracking gig with covers band Dazed, last night. Back to "Northern Clubland" after a committee member saw us at a local pub. Cheap beer and very friendly, but older, audience. Finished first set and were immediately re-booked. During the interval Bingo, a large group of bikers appeared and began chatting to my wife, who was doing sound-fortunately it was all smiles and laughing as we had done a fairly middle of the road set, in view of the audience. We are now booked for their Silver Anniversary get together and they want to bring our singer into the venue on the back of one of their Harleys-she is delighted!!! What a great bunch of guys.
13. If it is the one that I think it is (just going off your location and that of one on e-bay) you can see black lettering where tedgilley has said, on the photograph taken from the rear, where it will say "crafted in Japan" and give the serial number. Unfortunately, it is not possible to enlarge the images to see clearly, but the seller should be able to provide it. Just for information, mine has the "crafted in Japan" legend in a very fine italic font
14. To my way of thinking he's not an agent, he's a chancer who's used the fact that a few venues can't be a****d to do the work to style himself an agent. My personal opinion would be to drop him and then (if you think you need one) look for a reputable agent with a wide range of contacts rather than one who's persuaded a few pubs to work through him. Now decent agents used to charge more than 10% (it's been some time since I worked with one) but if the money's better you're still in pocket. Steve "Chancer" is exactly the word that I used. Easy to get bands to fill in at short notice if a pub is left in the lurch. Bands are falling over themselves in the North East to get gigs
15. We have just been presented with this scenario too. Think its probably the same guy. We have told him to shove it, we only got one venue anyway and the venue want us back now that he no longer books. Yes, easy diary filler, but do we really need it? My other bugbear, with another agency, is that we have a couple of pubs who want to book us, but the agent concerned (for whatever reason) refuses to return 'phone calls and e-mails.
16. That North East Bass Bash has a lot to answer for . Guess what I have just changed my lifelong allegiance from Selmer/Marshall to? First outing last weekend and it sounded great. Decided on the GS cabs though.
17.
...and you joined BC to say that, nice touch.
Think the wallet is going to suffer, though, looking through the "For Sale" threads
18. Thanks guys, for organizing this. Great to meet you all. Good company and my son and I were made to feel very welcome. Jay-James sends his apologies for monopolizing your rig, he lost track of time (typical 14 year old) and I was too busy talking to realise!!! Just give me a shout if you ever want to try the Steinberger
