1. Thanks Tom. The top is still off so that the internal blocks can be clamped properly.
2. Fully carved 3/4 DB restoration project £225 Originally bought on fleabay with the intent of repairing and bringing the bass back into use. We are moving to house from Derbyshire to Cambridge and I have enough issues with storing my other DBs and need to down size. Best laid plans and all that ! I dont know anything about the history of the bass other than it is Gamba shaped and likely to be have been made in Germany, Austria, Hungary region . It certainly is not a modern bass and my feel is that it is maybe 100 or so years old. Nice close and even grain to the top and back, with wooden bouts. The neck is original and the heel is sound (see photos). It has been stripped by the previous owner and is 'in the white' ready for re-varnishing. The photos show the work needed - all in the grasp of someone with a some fairly basic joinery skills. Once complete, this will make a fine fully carved all wood double bass and a great little investment project for anyone interested in double bass repairs as a hobby. Delivery and postage: Would have to be collect only I'm afraid as its a bit big to put in the post. That said, I am based near Bakewell and happy to travel to the outskirts of Sheffield, Manchester, Chesterfield if that helps. As an alternative I do have a rigid lightweight double bass case and would be happy to pack the bass in that and have it couriered to you (at your cost) and you could have the case for an extra £50.

4. Standard height for many bassists is 30 inches but 'ymmv'. If you can , you want to get one with a cross bar at about 10 inches height for a foot rest. However many younger players are going lower these days ( certainly on the Classical side) so as to get both feet on the ground and so 24 inches is becoming more and more common. Dont know where you can get one in Hungary but K+M are excellent (but expensive).
Excellent - thanks Hector looks like a lot of fun - we should have a go at doing something like this on BC !
6.
Haha, that was made for me by Alan. It came with a mag pup that was fitted to end of the neck. Everything fitted inside the half body case. Looked very interesting on stage.
...why does the thought of a secret bottle of whisky stashed away spring to mind? !!
7. Dont see lefty Double Basses that often ! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LEFT-HAND-DOUBLE-BASS-/331142385282?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Sting_Instruments&hash=item4d199fce82

9. Worth £800 brand new so a real snip at just £250! Just need to find luthier who can repair the broken neck, mend the cross grain spilt top, patch the hole in the back where the sound post has punched through, refit the bridge, set the sound post, make good the varnish and set up all for under £550 - I think this is a *R.U.B.B.E.R. ! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Primavera-P50-Laminate-Double-Bass-3-4-Rockabilly-Damaged-RRP-799-21-/271411616002?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Sting_Instruments&hash=item3f31649902 * RUBBER - Really Unplayable Bass Beyond Economical Repair .
10. [sharedmedia=core:attachments:156498] Just a taster - me behind the saxes at the Pomegranate Theatre in concert.
11. Forgot to mention with MuseScore the play button plays the whole piece that you have written. The value is that you first practice getting the dots correct in writing and then listen to the outcome without any effort. It really sorts out understanding of groups of notes, tied, dotted or rested and that sticks when it comes to sight reading which is the other way around (play the note and hope it sounds like what is written). Works for me anyway ! Good luck with it. https://www.musescore.com
12. I made massive sight reading improvements when I started having to transpose tuba parts into DB parts for orchestra. The key was to start writing ...not reading. I use MuseScore which is free to download. As you write the music you can play back the notes and hear what you write. That for me is really powerful , hearing the music in your head from the dots.
13.
They said this would be a good set up if you don't want to play much slap bass, also said that with the K&K there's no need for a pre-amp. Any opinions ??
The set up may well need tweaking and it would be good to budget maybe £100 to have the bridge and sound post adjusted by a luthier so that the set up is perfect for your needs and the sound is optimised . Slappers usually like a nice high action, Orchestral players vary, many players have a medium string height as its easier on the fingers, jazzers often like a low setting - Thomann supply the bass with the factory set up which is usually high so that there is scope to tweak downwards .
14.
Pictures are fine Jon, as is discussion of fakes. It's just links to any ads that are banned.
The links to said site at the head of this thread which are selling Rickenbacker fakes have therefore been deleted.
15. I guess thats the allure of Jazz - always chasing the notes that will sound perfect for that moment in time!
16. One thing which might be fun for you to look at is experiment with avoiding playing the root note of the chord on the first note of each bar. Good Job
17.
PDF files still not working.
The files that you upload to BC will start life in .pdf but will be converted to .ipb to be hosted on here. Anyone who wants to open the file needs to download to their computer and change the ending back to .pdf and the file will open.
18. I find it really useful to use iRealB App . I will quite frequently put in a couple of tricky chord changes and loop them over and over to try different ideas and really get to know the structural notes, harmonies etc. Theres a 'mixing desk' in the settings to alter the volume of piano, drums and bass up (or down if you want no bass line however the bass lines are quite imaginative and give some concepts , plus the lines change style and feel according to the rhythm base that is selected). Cant recommend iRealB highly enough!
19. For sure However sometimes .pdf files when upload to the BC portal convert to .ipb extensions. Its to do with the platform software.
20.
They were meant to be PDF files...
To open , save to computer and simply change the name of the file extension to .pdf
21. What do you think to this? May not be your thing or a bit off patch ...but no harm in asking ! http://basschat.co.uk/topic/230335-your-chance-to-shine-double-bassist-for-2-varied-orchestras-derbyshire/page__pid__2374943#entry2374943
22. Looks like I will be moving away from the Peak District of Derbyshire and the two orchestras that I currently play in will need to fill my shoes. Peak Wind Orchestra (based at Youlgrave near Bakewell), play all sorts of music from Swing, full on orchestral, movie theme tunes, Classics, etc need to be a good reader and good at responding to whatever gets thrown your way. Generally all musicians are Grade 8 upwards and you would have to be comfortable playing to a high standard. Rehearsals are every two weeks on a Sunday from 4.30 - 7.30 . The orchestra does a number of concerts each year including Proms in the Garden ( Haddon Hall), Chatsworth House open day, Pomegranate Theatre Chesterfield, plus other fund raisers. Been a lot of fun and I have developed so much as a musician playing with these guys. Peak Chamber Orchestra (based at Calver again, near Bakewell), a very different vibe and a good way for anyone to get into an orchestra for the first time to develop bowing, sight reading and general musicianship skills. Grade 3 minimum standard and the orchestra meets on tuesday evenings weekly playing easy and some other 'no so easy' classics! Good mix of age ranges and the Orchestra is very inclusive and nurturing of all to develop as musicians. Currently only very occasional concerts. Anyone interested please PM with some contact details and I will chat through things in more detail. Many thanks Peter
23. Have a look at Bryant - I rate Pauls work and am a proud owner of a Byant Solo http://www.bryantbasses.co.uk
24.
Bargain!
..maybe. All depends on how well that neck repair holds out.
