1.
If you're single, condoms. You may be the bass player, but you never know.
As a bass player, you know that you are not the first and won't be the last........Eeeeuuuuwwww!
2. Very easy to overeat and over drink - don't avoid, but, as Clint Eastwood said 'A mans got to know his limits'. Nothing worse than playing a gig and feeling bloated and hung over...... Keep your gear with you; make sure that it is not dropped knocked or damaged in transit. Laundrettes are your friend and with the advent of smartphones, easy to find. An hour in the laundrette sorting out you clothes is like getting into fresh bedsheets - just make you feel good, also, you carry less. And an hours downtime with a book.....! get your hearing and voice back! Converse boots - machine washable, you will probably sleep in them at somepoint or have something spilled on them! They also fold flat. Salad and fruit help to establish a bowel routine, Fibre y'see, know your 'times'......Nothing worse than being in a van with a load of blokes and nowhere near a bog! Bananas are a better energy kick than Mars bars....... Take a belt with you! Weight can change if you are on the road for a while, I tended to lose weight; but I was lucky enough to be on a Boy Band tour with a sh1tload of dancing girls.....a mind blowing shagfest! If you wear glasses; get daily contacts if you can.
3. So, I bought an unfinished fleabass..... I am borrowing a German built Warwick Corvette, which is very nice, but sadly not mine. The plan with the fleabass is to let my 3 year old daughter paint it/colour it and to fit gotoh tuners. I may even update the pickup and electrics; anyone any experience of updating a fleabass - let me know what works!
4. Okay - Thanks for the info all. So, it is more about technique change to accommodate the low 'b'; and setup of equipment to accommodate the low resonance. I will have another go on it; preferably when I am not in a rehearsal time. I think I needed to set the amp eq up very different than I have set up for the 4 string (my Warwick is passive too).
5. Okay - I can see the sense in a wider range of note/tone for less movement, I get that. I am not thinking of buying a 5 string at all, I thought it was fun to try it; but I think that 4 is enough for me, my ability and my amplification. I may borrow it again to try some stuff on. The extra power for the low end could be a problem......500W and 2 x 210 cabs. I think the low b will kill the cabs.
6.
Sounds like a cheap bass, badly set up. IMO you can only make an informed decision about 5-string basses when you have played a decent one (£1000+) which has been set up to suit your playing style.
I was not really asking about the bass specifically, as it was not mine and I don't intend to buy or play it. I don't have access to £1000 pieces of musical kit as with most people and I am not looking to compare it to anything anyway... But any tips on what you can do with the low 'b' musically - Amp and cab preferences and settings or any tricks that allow you to move between 4 and 5 string would be appreciated.
7. So, I had a play on a 5 string bass last night, Ibanez Soundgear variant, and I have a few queries; 1, the low 'B' aside growling the sound up, what can it actually be used for? Percussion? Does anyone retune it to a more useable frequency? 2, String spacing - weird, I tried going between 4 and 5 string bases and it was messy to say the least. 3, Amps and cabs; I was running the 5 string through a 250w head and 210 cab and man, the cab was on the limit with the low 'B' - any tips? The bass did not have much 'tone' to it - so, are the pickups the all important thing in a 5 string bass - I think it was an Ibanez Soundgear 200 series - active with humbuckers. Just a few thoughts; I quite like the idea, but it was a bit weird to play. Any ideas or thoughts on playing it more musically would be appreciated - I am here to learn!
8. My Father in law has an Ampeg SVT 350 CL + a few cabs, hard act to follow......sounds like the 8 x 10 is the pic of the cabs though.
9. 2 x 210 cabs.....4 ohm @ 500w
10. Great guy - easy transaction and could not do enough to help. Nice chap! Happy man with new cabs!
11. **Update** Just installed Eminence Beta 10 8 ohms into the Peavey TX 210 cabs... They sound excellent! I am very very happy with them. great amount of thud and lots of definition.
12. For me, Fieldy is underrated; I know that his name generally creates a love/hate thread - but for real: Innovative - Hip hop bass, like it was nicked from a DJ decks Sound - Fat and Clicky Style - percussive - like a drummer Impact - he ain't afraid to turn it up and play it hard I love it and I am gonna learn how he does some stuff..... Discuss.... **I also like Peter Cetera!
13. I don't think that many bass players would 'learn' anything from Peter Hook, I think that he is limited as a player - but his sound is what adds to Joy Division and New Order, I don't like his sound if I had to listen to it individually, but I am very cool with listening to the music as a whole. However, he has created and played very successful music and his style has added the bottom and sometimes the top line and hook line to some fantastic tracks. For me, that makes him more of a great arranger and collaborator that happened to get lumbered with bass playing. Personality wise, He comes across as a bit of a nob and I am pretty sure he would feel the same of me, if we met, - but he is very successful and I am not, so who the f*ck am I to comment!!
14. Hmm... It makes you wonder how little actual performances everyone else was doing to lose this award....However, after touring with a boy band, I can confirm; although the work is not hard it is laborious - Constant attention, interviews, appearances, expectations. So, I can imagine that it is harder work off stage for JLS than onstage..... Perhaps the measure should be moved to 'media whoreness' as opposed to stage presence.....
15. Doh!!!!!! Very kind of you to offer your time. The beta looked better than the alpha for bass. Noted on bills site the svt 210he uses a similar driver to the alpha. I also noted that the beta has been used successfully in peavey 210 cabs...we'll see though
16.
You're not considering the most important charts, maximum power and maximum SPL.
This is true - My budget is tight due to an ongoing job/house move - However, I did read this: http://billfitzmaurice.info/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=2357 on your website Bill. Are Eminence Alpha 10's really a close match to the driver in the Ampeg SVT210HE cab? I am using the SVT210HE at the moment borrowed from my father-in-law. However, my 'new' cabs are similar in size a volume - peavey tx cabs unloaded tuned for 40hz with crossover and horn at 3500hz - 80 liters or 3 cu ft volume - ported at the rear. I have opted for the Eminence Beta as I prefer some low end. However, I am wondering if I could have used the Alpha......
17. Interesting - I looked at the eminence beta too. I spoke to blue aran and they recommended a p audio driver..... This may be a suck it and see.....
18. Thanks Phil - I agree with you. I think I will run up one cab now and see how it goes. My thoughts are more towards the Eminence Delta's mentioned - they seem to be a bit more punchy.
19. Above are the graphs for the old peavey 1035 speaker: Orange line Speaker I have selected as a match: QTX pro music: Green line QTX: http://www.bluearan....semode=category - Linke to Theile values 902.433: http://cdn.avslgroup...mall_902127.pdf Peavey 1035: http://www.peavey.co...reg%3BTVX1035-4 I have a crossover installed at 3500hz + tunable Horn that I would like to keep - So, Eminence BP102 would not work as they cut off a 2000hz..... Thoughts anyone?
20. Thanks to MonkeyTrick! 2 Great condition Peavey TX cabs unloaded - Now all I have to do is load them! Any ideas? Anyone used polypropylene speakers / Car Kickers? Just a thought! Easy transaction - Thanks again dude!
21. Okay - what does this mean if I have a cabinet tuned to 40hz? Does it affect the range of the driver that I can put in? Should the driver resonance match as closely as possible the cabinet tuning? I have no flippin' idea!
22. Just a thought; I had a scooch about on t'interweb. PA drivers seem to be a bit cheaper, but with a better spec; larger frequency range and high sensitivity. Wattages and impedence seem to match up well. Any reported problems? Are 'bass guitar specific drivers quite simply a marketing ploy to push the numbers up?

Noob - Hello

Mercedes ML.......oh dear :-(
24. Well, I did put 'Monsters inc' up, which I think is fabulous playing.....!
25.
You missed my irony then... it was surprising to find bass in such a hopeless place as AJFA, where it had notoriously been lowered to inaudible levels in the mix.
Ah - I see! I think you can attribute all 'lost' bass to Andy Templemans productions of the mid 80's - circa Van Halen's 5150, which feature no bass at all in the mix!
