1. As above, I've recently bought one of these and really enjoying it (cheers Les!). At the moment I like using it as a preamp as can get a nice clean tones using on board eq. But distortion sounds are ok, but lacking any bottom end. Wondering whether there is a way on these units to blend the clean sound with the distortion to flesh it out a bit, like you can on bass overdrive pedals?
2.
thanks thats great info, i will look for a usa sub as quite a few of the others around and thanks foe the info on the sterling as was really confusing
There's two for sale in basschat world - check the for sale section. I would still love one, but just can't afford one until I can liquidate my assets so to speak. Making do with my ray copy with its replica preamp - still sounds really good though.
3. Part of me thinks I should keep it, but purely because it says Gibson on the front of the headstock and Made in USA on the back. But although it sounds great for what it does its not really me anymore so it's not getting used and I know I would love a CV tele. But at the end of the day guitars are just tools to get a job done and I've never been sentimental about guitars!
4. Thanks for replies, I didn't see the one on gumtree and I have been checking. To be fair there isn't really anything that needs sorting anymore, the guitar keeps in tune and but I guess resale value would be hit with something like that. The repair to thedamage can be seen:-
5. Hi all. I've been debating for a while on whether to sell a guitar I've got, a Gibson SG-X. Not much information exists on this model. I know it's USA made and was a limited run by Gibson for a year or two. It is the normal SG shape but in different solid finishes and sports just one humbucker in bridge position with coil tap available. It does have damage on the headstock where it was split and I glued it back together and a small metal plate screwed on for reinforcement. Does anybody have any idea what these may sell for? Was bought by my friend for £500 2nd hand in 2003 (but this model dates to 1999) but I got this guitar (in its damaged state) in a trade for a pickup. I find I don't tend to use as much anymore and I'm really gassing after a Squier CV Telecaster.
6. This GAS is still present, but I think the Squier CV is the way to go. Not played a V52 still but have read that a lot of people were not happy with the fret finishing on Vintages. (I have a Vintage bass that has a few nasty fret ends). I'm working on selling/trading a few guitars / basses to try get one, although market is pretty slow. I should pay the subs really and try flogging on here!
7. Thanks for responses. All it is, the pickups on my Yamaha BB414 are pretty hot and I'm trying to replicate a recording tone I used on a track years ago, but struggling a bit. The bass used was a p copy and I'm using the p pickup in my Yamaha. I appreciate that pickups are not going to sound the same, but didn't know if rolling off volume may replicate the more mellower output nature of that other bass. (not had chance to check myself first hand either)
8. In a bass with a high output, if the volume is set lower, say about half way can this replicate the tone of a lower output bass? Or will it still have a slightly compressed tone typical of a hot pickup?
9. What wood are Westfields made of?
10. You gonna put some flats on that and join a jazz trio
11.
I don't suppose anyone knows what year Vintage started using Wilkinson hardware? Only, I've got a VS6 (their SG copy) which must be about 10 years old now. I suspect the hardware is not Wilkinson (can't see any logo or decal on the p/ups), and I've toyed with the idea of upgrading the pickups - would I be correct in assuming that a pair of Wilkinsons* would be a good replacement? *not a euphemism
I think it was around 2009 from checking google. 10 years old it will most certainly not be Wilkinson unfortunately. Wilkinson pickups are definitely worth a punt. I bought a £50 plywood telecaster last year and put some Wilkinson pickups in and the difference was definitely noticeable. Actually sounds like more like tele now rather than a £50 plywood guitar!
12.
£38 off ebay, I had to replace a pot ,strings and set it up. lives in my kitchen .
Haha, it was yours I saw then. Nice. Is the tort standard or did you add it?
13. I decided not to bother in the end on this bass. I may still get a cheap knockabout bass and sell others but not in a rush. I have heard lots of good things about the Westfield p, I do like the black and maple one. Seen someone put a tort pickguard on and it looked decent.
14. Bought a Zoom B2 multi - FX from, good price and I am happy with the unit. He and gave a good demo of what it could do. Pleasure to deal with. Cheers
15. Enjoying reading this thread, especially as I may be acquiring one of these to play about with. I needs a project!
16. Sold my Behringer Bass V-amp to Bobby this evening. Pleasure to deal with, hassle free transaction. Cheers!
17. Just had a look at that thread, great work. Did you get the SP3's in? was there much of a difference sound wise? The replacement of tuners was that as much of a ballache as what it looked? If I was to go down that route I have no angle grinder!
18. Had another look today and a play and it is genuinely a good instrument. Plays as well as my Yammy BB414 (so if in the real world it sounds decent too, I wont have any qualms in shifting the Yammy on in favour of making this my main bass) The shop owner is interested in a trade for a Tele copy I've got (but maybe a couple of quid his way) Can anyone help date it with the serial number? CY20710636 (crafted in China) It has 20th anniversary on the neck plate, don't know if this makes it a particular model or not.
19. I actually had a play on it last week when I spotted it.Strings were dead, but neck was straight and the action was low. Only issue is that its red, I'm not a massive fan of red guitars but I could live with it. Maybe a prettier pickguard could help its cause.
20. Cool. Seriously considering selling my two basses in favour of a decent cheapo one as my involvement in playing live/recording is dwindling so the money raised from others can be diverted elsewhere! I seriously think all I need is a p bass of some description for the sound I want.
21. Seen one of these in a bric - a brac shop near where I work for £60. Got a split in pickguard and and ding near jack but all in working order. I know they are bottom rung in Squier line up but are they actually ok? Any real world experience of using it for rehearsing / demo recording?
22. I agree with all that definitely. I remember when I got my replacement to my Encore, (a 1988 5 string Yamaha RBX series) thinking that even though it was technically a better bass it didn't seem to sound as good recorded and it took me a long time to get a workable recording tone from it. True, this bass went on to become my workhorse bass for the next 12 years but listening back to the early recordings using the Encore, this is a clear winner. I think I'm going to try source the same era encore if I can (for nostalgic purposes!) I'm sure plenty of charity shops around the country should have one kicking about!
23.
Fender style ones were the earliest, made in India. They had another typical feature - square, boxy string trees instead of the disc shaped ones. I don't care too much about later generations, but I believe those made by Vintage have similar headstock shape that Vintages have.
Cool, the one in this shop must have been a pre Wilkinson put post Indian era. Still it was lovely though, everything tightly screwed in and nice finish on neck
24. Does anyone know what era each headstock represents? Eg the latest shape when did they start using that? I think when I had mine it looked more like a Fender style one.
