1.
Good example of the cable 'twist' technique:
Thanks very much sleepy.
2. Name: Bryan Age: 18 and a half Location: East Anglia Took up bass: Christmas 2004 Wears the bass: Strings about flies level. Wants: More money for more basses. (I would never pay more than £400 for a bass, even if i had the money to spare.) Plays: Fretted 4 strings exclusively. I'm a rock loving, tall & lanky, 90% plectrum bassist. (I don't like being called a bass player, or a bass guitarist, but thats mainly personal preference) I have an old metal British Airways cigarette case, and it's got my pick collection in it, i change picks depending on the song, and i love to take the opportunity to dig in. I joined my first band this Christmas gone, it's a covers band, and I've noticed through it that i have some sort of magical sub-conscious way of keeping time, I never count, and I never focus on part of the drum kit for more than about half a song. I know I need to let myself go and et into the music more, because the guitarist i always stand next to gets so into it, he's one of the talking points of the band, and i wanna build up to his level of excellence. I'm completely self-taught, only rarely using books, and using A LOT of tabs, although I'm fairly decent at working out a bass-line from listening to the track a few times. Although, because I'm self-taught (and because i have odd fingers and thumbs, double jointed and fairly long... I think they're called hitchhikers thumbs? ) My technique is very flawed, i hold a pick badly, and don't grip the neck properly either. I know i need to learn some theory, and i could do it, I just have never sat down and concentrated. When I'm playing I like to be heard, I don't want to fade into the background, but i don't play a lot of melodically flash stuff, i just love it when a fill really fits, even if it's very simple. Sorry for the long post, maybe i should release an auto-biography.
3. I like the glasses and the hairstyle, it's a very quirky, but strangely rather cool stage persona. I think i need to develop myself one of those. Gimme all your lovin'! Don't et up until we're through. HALLELUJAH! HALLELUJAH!
4.
A trick I learnt many years ago, from a BBC sound engineer/roady, was to coil it up into your hand, but put a sort of reverse twist into it every other coil. Very hard to describe in writing, but the affect is that you can coil it up, then hold one end and through the coil away from you and it will (should) completely uncoil itslef and lay flat on the floor without a twist in sight. Clive.
I think I need a diagram... I always coil my cables by holding the end in one hand, pulling my other hand down the cable then rolling it a hole turn between my fingers and thumb, then bring my hands together, making a loop. Then lather, rinse, repeat. But this BBC method sounds intriguing!
5.
unable to decide what instrument you want to play? well now you don't have to with the bass/mandolin/banjo/guitar! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-PRO-QUADRUPLE-NE...oQQcmdZViewItem
Wow..... Imagine being able to pull off playing all of those instruments in a song. That would be brilliant. Definitely a talking piece.
6. I think they should be looked at more as expensive conversation pieces to put in a large glass box in the corner of your not so run-of-the-mill independent rock gallery. Look but don't touch! Please don't breath on the glass! Do not touch the exhibits! Further down the gallery, is Jimi Hendrix's left handed plectrum, and Rick Allen's left arm.
7. Thats not just crap, that's AmeriCrap! There's a big difference between JapCrap and AmeriCrap, and that's JapCrap is actually good. Isn't this made by that idiot that had a big battle of hateful comments on youtube? I like how he calls it "Professional", I don't know what professional would ever use that.
8.
allighatt0r, you're Cort is a very sexy bass. I hadn't seen one with a tort guard before.
Thanks very much! I'm hopefully gonna take some pictures soon and Bass Porn it.
9.
I was just about to put up the exact same topic! I too would like to try this, so if anyone could post up their experiences with non-Fender p basses I would be very grateful. I'd basically like to buy one that is made of good quality wood (I'm thinking 70's/80's Japanese copies might be best), for under £100 preferably, and I'll fit new pickups/hardware to it. The reason I think old Japanese stuff is maybe the way to go is that I have a 70's Columbus Jazz bass and it is a solid piece of wood. No need to relic it to get the vintage look either, as it is 30 years old so is already relic-ed!!
You put it much better than i did, you've taken the words right out of my brain that i couldn't get out of my fingers
10. Good Morning! Shame you didn't try out an Ibanez Jetking. (I'm currently desperate to find out what they sound like. ) Welcome to Basschat.
11.
Aria IGB40. Because i'm weak and it's light. I absolutely love it xD But i'm going into town today, probably just to look at what i can't afford. But i'm now officially saving.
That's a pretty bass... (well, the redburst i found on imuso was). I definitely have a penchant for redburst.... EDIT: that blue is cool too
12. The (first) bassist from the Arctic Monkeys was not necessarily a stunningly technical bassist, but he did make some very good bass lines, and the Arctic Monkeys formed in 2002.
13. Beatcraft - Is a free to try drum machine software, although fairly basic, i've had some fun with it!
14. NOFX - We Threw Gasoline on the Fire and Now We Have Stumps For Arms and No Eyebrows No... I'm serious.
15. I have fairly big hands... My fingers are long and thin though, i kept getting told i has pianists' fingers when i was small... which used to annoy me because i never wanted to play the piano! Welcome aboard though, I wish i had the courage to buy & try a double bass, but I'm sure i would be terrible with it.
16. Do you mean one of these? I can't seem to find it in anything other than a package...
17. Fat Mike from NOFX. Definitely... Although he's probably a 90s as well... Damn and blast... *thinks.....*
18.
100% in agreement.
Let's flew our muscle as a thriving bass community, and email Ibanez for sound clips etc. Anyone wanna convince an admin to do it for us? You never know, they could send one to someone for another one of those official reviews... I do hope i'm not getting ahead of myself here
19. All you people are so money orientated
20.
nice, but not in the sunburst, the turquois one is nicer IMO
There's a turquoise one? I thought the bass only came in sunburst and black. I really want to know how this thing sounds, because if it's nice i have no real reason to say no to buying one...
21. Very true. I'm glad i don't have money to throw at things.
22. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=110222463010 I like the look of the Blue sunburst especially, and the maple, i'm just weary, as this is cheap enough to be worried about it, where as an SX is cheap enough to go "crikey!" and yet you can still trust them, if that makes sense... Looking at the full size picture, the wood of the contour for your right forearm looks a bit odd, but that may just be me. What do you guys think?
23. That's really sad to hear OHM, I wish you the best of luck trying to find a replacement.
24. After looking at those schematics i think the idea of building our own is pretty out of the window... they just look plain scary. But thanks very much for the thomann link, it looks like just what we were after.
25. Recently my brother bought himself a £99 6 string bass, and the price tag shows... but it's given him his first experience of a 6 string and he likes it, and it's a bit of a project upgrading it, new strings, nut, ...whatever. And as the tone layout is frankly stupid (two volumes, one for each pickup, and no less than three passive tone knobs (each pot has a capacitor....)) So, we've come to the conclusion that it wouldn't be a bad idea to make it into an active bass, changing the three tone knobs into a three band EQ... I was wondering what would be the best way to go about doing this, should i try to purchase a ready made wiring set on Ebay, or would it be better to make one myself, buying a 9-volt battery adapter and some wires from Maplins and soldering the lot together, between me and my dad we have some half decent wiring and soldering experience. Thanks for any help in advance.
